i believe one of the biggest selling factors will be for the family, not simply casual. many wii u games will be playable on the gamepad while someone else is watching tv. don’t underestimate this simple fact.

as far as core gamers go, unless you like nintendo IPs, i doubt this system will sway you from your current console. yes, there’s new stuff you can do with the gamepad, but aside from asymmetrical gameplay (don’t discount that, it’s pretty fun) most of the touch capability of the gamepad you probably already have casual games for on your smartphone.

personally, i’ve preordered a wii u because nintendo appears to have a normal-ish controller again, it’s hd, and I miss zelda and smash bros. nintendo has always had the best first party titles for any console, and they rarely fail to deliver.

I agree, though I think that Bayonetta 2 is just the tipping point here. Though I agree if you don’t like Nintendo IPs there isn’t going to be anything to sway you here, I think Nintendo might surprise people with more exclusives or more traditional entertainment. After all Retro Studios is working on a surprise and we don’t know just what it is yet.

I hate Nintendo. There’s not a single first party franchise of theirs that I find remotely interesting. They represent everything I dislike about this industry (fun before all else).

But I’d be a complete idiot to claim they can’t be successful on the formula they’ve adopted. Sure at some point even die hard fans will get tired of new Zelda, Mario, and Metroid games but there’s no reason to believe Nintendo won’t adapt to that.

They fill a particular market segment and if the Wii is any indication, they don’t need the best visuals on the market to compete.
