New Mutants Won’t Be Like Other X-Men Films
The X-Men franchise is actually something very broad and diverse. While it may seem like just a bunch of movies about kids and adults with superpowers in a world that hates them, it’s a little more complex than that. And say what you will about recent successes and failures, but Fox is finally starting to show that larger world. The X-Men films have been going on for a while now, but with the arrival of Deadpool came a true branching out, and that’s lead to the confirmation of an X-Force film, and the arrival of the upcoming New Mutants film.
But unlike the pure X-Men, New Mutants are about kids who are locked up because they don’t have control of their powers. This comes from the CEO of Fox Studios Stacey Snider:
“New Mutants is about these teenagers who are just coming into their powers. It’s like watching mutants go through adolescence and they have no impulse control, so they’re dangerous. The only solution is to put them in a Breakfast Club detention/Cuckoo’s Nest institutional setting.” she said to Variety.
She goes on to note that “(the) genre is like a haunted-house movie with a bunch of hormonal teenagers. We haven’t seen it as a superhero movie whose genre is more like The Shining than ‘we’re teenagers let’s save the world.'”
It is indeed a new take on the Mutant franchise, New Mutants is set to release April 13th, 2018.
