Hulu Greenlights Pilot For Marvel’s Runaways
If you’re one of those people who have been sitting impatiently through greenlight after greenlight for even the most obscure of Marvel characters — Ant-Man for crying out loud — while the fan favorite comic Runaways was repeatedly ignored, your wait may be ending soon. Deadline confirmed today that Hulu is ordering a pilot based on the comic, as well as a full season’s worth of scripts.
Runaways is about a group of teenagers who discover their parents are supervillains. Determined to stop them, they all run from home and form their own team, using their superpowers to stop the criminal organization their parents run. It was a very novel concept when it premiered and the first two series that grew out of it were well-written.
So now for the all-important question: who’s adapting this? It’s Josh Schwartz & Stephanie Savage, creators of Gossip Girl, The OC and…..urgh, I don’t like this list…..oh wait, Chuck is on it.
“We’ve known the Runaways‘ story would make great television,” said Jeph Loeb, EP and Head of Marvel Television, “and being lucky enough to have Josh and Stephanie — who have time and again created shows that speak so genuinely to this exact audience — write and produce the series is nothing short of remarkable.”
The quality could teeter-totter either way, folks. If they just stick to the script laid out by Brian K. Vaughan, it’ll be a slam dunk. If they feel the need to turn this into Runaways 90210, and make everyone into the most annoying, irresponsible stereotypes possible, it’ll be ugly. If it’s like Chuck….well, I’d watch.
Don’t pander, is what I’m saying. There’ll be riots if they ruin Nico.
