Godzilla: Tokyo SOS To Get US Screening March 22
Before there was anime, the most popular Japanese import the West knew about was Godzilla. Born from postwar anxieties, the radioactive lizard would stomp his way through dozens of films over the next 50 years. A handful of them have been created by American studios who thought they could do better, but Godzilla will always feel most at home in Tokyo.
In the 60s and 70s when drive-in theaters were desperate for content, most Japanese Godzilla films received US translations (and bad dubbing) but these days it’s incredibly rare for Godzy to get his domestic flicks playtime in other countries. The invention of Fathom Events and one-time screenings has helped, though. Next month Godzilla: Tokyo SOS, originally released in Japan in 2003, will make its US theatrical debut for the first time, on the 20th anniversary of its initial release.
Here’s the situation: “In Godzilla: Tokyo SOS, Mothra’s twin fairies appear with a warning to Japan that Kiryu (aka Mechagodzilla) must be put to rest at the bottom of the ocean or face the wrath of Mothra. When Godzilla returns once again, will humanity heed the warning or will Kiryu be forced to fight against two monsters?” It’s an oldschool production with men in suits and miniature models made for stomping on.
Godzilla: Tokyo SOS will screen March 22 nationwide. Check your local listings to see where it’ll be playing near you.
