From The Ashes Of Arkane Will Rise A Cool New Game Studio

You don’t need me to tell you the actions of Microsoft in the past few years have caused a ton of damage to the game industry, but the good news is, the end is not “the end.” Just because XBox bought a bunch of talent just to throw it away doesn’t mean that talent will never make another game again.

One of the worst casualties has been Arkane Studios, the place that made some of the coolest first-person titles of the last twenty years. Prey, the Dishonored series and Deathloop were all theirs. As someone who deeply enjoyed their stuff and has given up all hope of ever seeing a Dishonored 3, the news that they are reassembling as a new, independent force is welcome…and so is the announcement that they’ll be making more of the same type of games.

Harvey Smith was the co-creative director on Dishonored, the creative director on Dishonored 2 and lead game designer on the original Deus Ex. He and collaborator Ben Horne have announced the founding of Black Pony Immersive, a new studio that will boast the likes of talent from Arkane, Insomniac, Epic, Avalanche and Volition, and people who worked on Deus Ex, Dishonored, Prey and Just Cause.

I’ve never heard this term before, but they’re calling them “immersive sims,” which is all sorts of confusing. They mean a world rich in lore where you can play the story in any style you want — action or stealth. When I hear “sim” I think of a computer game where you overlord a village or command the armies of the world or play around with a bunch of weird-acting people. Why can’t they call them “stealth-action games”?

“During a time of industry volatility, I’m proud to announce the next step in my video game journey with the reveal of our new studio,” Smith says. “At our new studio, we’re building exactly the kind of single-player games we’re most passionate about.” Horne adds, “This group has worked together for years, decades in some cases, and is purpose-built to make the ambitious games we love — immersive sims. We can’t wait to reveal more soon.”

Since games today take a ridiculously long time to make we may not hear about Black Pony’s first title for a long time. Hopefully we get something before the decade is through.

It's interesting to see how the industry reshapes itself after significant upheaval. Arkane has such a rich legacy with games like Dishonored and Prey, where the immersive environments and player choice really shine through. A new studio rising from that history could lead to fresh takes on similar mechanics, especially if they are willing to push boundaries in gameplay design and narrative like Arkane did.

I'm curious about what direction they might take. Will they lean more into the immersive sim elements, or explore new genres? I hope they retain that commitment to deep, interconnected systems that reward exploration and creativity. What kind of game do you think they should pursue to capture that same spirit?

This news made my day. Arkane closing felt like losing a part of gaming history and I never thought we would hear something positive after that. Harvey Smith working on Dishonored and Deus Ex means he understands what makes these games special. I am not worried about the studio name or what they call the genre, I just want another game where I can choose to sneak past everyone or go loud and chaotic. Prey is still one of my favorite games ever made and I replay it every year. If this new studio can bring back that feeling of freedom in gameplay, I will support them from day one. Waiting many years for a first release is hard but quality takes time. I trust this team more than most big publishers right now.

Microsoft really said let's destroy a legendary studio for no reason and then act surprised when the talent just starts their own company anyway. This whole situation still makes me angry honestly.

I remember playing Dishonored for the first time and being amazed that I could finish a level without anyone noticing me. That kind of choice in gameplay is rare and I am glad the people who built it are not giving up on the idea.

Not gonna lie I have low expectations after seeing so many studios promise great things and deliver nothing for years. Hope this one is different but I am not holding my breath.

Deus Ex lead designer plus Dishonored creative director in one studio is honestly a dream team on paper. The talent list alone from Insomniac and Volition makes this sound promising. My only concern is funding and publisher pressure since independent studios often struggle with money even when the ideas are great. I want them to have full creative freedom this time without corporate interference ruining the vision like what happened before.

Immersive sim just means you can approach missions your own way, action or stealth or mixing both. It is a genre term that has existed for decades, nothing confusing about it once you play one of these games yourself.

Finally some good news in this industry for once. Feels like every week we hear about layoffs or studio closures so this is a nice change.

I loved Deathloop but I think Dishonored 2 was their real masterpiece in terms of level design. Excited to see what direction they take with a fresh start and no big corporate owner controlling their decisions this time. Hopefully they keep that same creative energy.

This industry needs more studios like this, built by people who actually love making games instead of chasing trends or quarterly profits. Wishing them success.
