Bubble Bobble 4 Friends Arrives On Switch 2 With More Friends

In 2019 Bubble Bobble 4 Friends was released for Nintendo Switch. It was a big expansion of Taito’s classic series, retaining the original bubble-shooting action platformer stage gameplay that made Bub and Bob stars of the 80s arcade…but adding more in the form of Peb and Pab, two more creatures from the same species (I think they’re dragons? Don’t quote me on that). This allowed for four-player gameplay in Bubble Bobble for the first time.

Clear River Games is now bringing Bubble Bobble 4 Friends back in a very Nintendo fashion by re-publishing what’s mostly the same game on Switch 2, just with some bonus content and a much longer name with a plus symbol in it. The Switch 2 version will henceforth be known as Bubble Bobble 4 Friends: The Baron is Back! Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Stardrop Mountain. Got all that?

Here’s what’s new: a never before seen collection of stages called Stardrop Mountain that pit you and your bubble-burping skills against the advancing forces of villain Invaduh. This is in addition to the 200 existing levels, the 1986 arcade game (included as a bonus), and a bump in resolution thanks to the Switch 2’s extra power.

Oh and the game is now compatible with the Switch 2 camera. This mainly means you’ll be able to take selfies inside the game, where your face will appear inside a bubble.

Clear River makes no mention of a release date (or a physical edition), but Bubble Bobble 4 Friends: The Baron is Back! Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Stardrop Mountain is expected to release digitally on Nintendo Switch 2 soon.

I remember playing Bubble Bobble 4 Friends and felt a bit let down by the lack of fresh mechanics, it felt too much like a rehash of the original formula. While the nostalgic bubble-shooting gameplay was fun, I was hoping for more innovative twists or updated visuals that could have modernized the experience a bit. It's a classic, sure, but in a world full of inventive platformers, it needed something extra to stand out. The title had potential, but it didn't really grab me in the way I hoped it would.
