The Iron Giant is a 1999 American animated science fiction film produced by Warner Bros. Feature Animation and directed by Brad Bird in his directorial debut. It is based on the 1968 novel The Iron Man by Ted Hughes.

Set during the Cold War in 1957, the film follows a young boy named Hogarth Hughes who discovers a giant metallic robot that fell from outer space. Together they form an unlikely friendship as Hogarth tries to prevent the U.S. military and a paranoid government agent from destroying the Giant.

The voice cast includes Eli Marienthal as Hogarth, Vin Diesel as the Iron Giant, Jennifer Aniston as Annie Hughes, and Harry Connick Jr. as Dean McCoppin. Christopher McDonald voices Kent Mansley, the antagonistic government agent.

Despite receiving widespread critical acclaim, the film was a box office disappointment, grossing only $31.3 million against a $70 million budget. Warner Bros. was criticized for its poor marketing of the film. However, The Iron Giant has since become a cult classic and is now regarded as one of the greatest animated films ever made.

Brad Bird went on to direct The Incredibles (2004) and Ratatouille (2007) for Pixar, both of which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. The Iron Giant is often cited as the film that launched his career.

A remastered "Signature Edition" was released in theaters in 2015 with two additional scenes, bringing renewed attention to the film.
