Earl Stutz is the sailor who makes first contact with the Giant in the 1999 animated film The Iron Giant, voiced by M. Emmet Walsh. In the storm that opens the film, he mistakes the Giant's glowing eyes for the Rockwell lighthouse and wrecks his boat on it, becoming the first known human to encounter the robot.
Stutz survives and makes it ashore, but his account of a giant metal man in the sea is laughed off in town as a fish story. His report is one of the early threads, along with the damage at the power substation, that eventually draws government attention to Rockwell.
