The Iron Giant is the titular character of the 1999 animated film The Iron Giant, directed by Brad Bird. He is voiced by Vin Diesel. The character is based on the metal man from Ted Hughes" 1968 novel The Iron Man.

A massive robot of unknown extraterrestrial origin, the Giant crashes to Earth near the coast of Maine in 1957. Despite being equipped with powerful defensive weapons, the Giant possesses a gentle, childlike personality and befriends nine-year-old Hogarth Hughes. Through their friendship, the Giant develops a moral identity, ultimately choosing to be a hero rather than a weapon.

The Giant"s final act of self-sacrifice, flying into a nuclear missile to save the town of Rockwell, is one of the most celebrated moments in animation history. His declaration "I am not a gun" and the callback to Superman encapsulate the film"s central theme: identity is a choice.
