Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger EP 19 - "Kywaeen! Kidnapped Family"

-Yup, Gold and Blue still have the best episodes.
-Yes, I actually really liked this episode. The social commentary was interesting, the monster was well developed, we got some good action scenes, Utchy got plenty of screentime, and everything actually felt genuine and wasn't too forced. Probably my favorite episode of Kyoryuger yet.
-I really hate the "Oh My!" gag though. It's not funny, and I wish they would stop especially since the delivery is so. Bad. Every. Single. Time.

I really cannot agree. Kyoryuger is the most fun Sentai since probably Deka.

Well I didn't find Deka all that fun either, but it's been a while since I've given it a watch.

It has the in-your-face gags, but there are also a LOT of hilarious moments that are very subtle and come at the very best time.

Because clownish theme park mascots for villains, tickle power, and flatulence defeating the bad guys is hilarious :rolleyes2: I won't even mention the dancing ED, since that's pretty much become a staple at this point.

In-your-face gags, as Toei shows execute them, are more often that not really annoying rather than funny. This isn't a cartoon. Some things you just can't do outside animation.

I frankly don't see why in-your-face gags prevents you from enjoying those that aren't. There are several types of comedy I don't like (like slapstick and jokes about physical features), but I tend to be indifferent to them, not get annoyed by them. I cannot possibly expect a show to be designed primarily to make me laugh.

Remember the show is not targeted at us, so don't treat it as an insult to our intelligence.

When I imagine a show about heroes battling villains and saving people... Kyoryuger as is (it does have certain elements that if done better would make me like the show more) does not come to mind. It helps kill the 'heroic' imagery for me. There are several types of comedy... so why is Toei fixated on the cartoony slapstick variety? For ratings? That doesn't seem to have really worked according to the results. Because Go-Busters didn't work they'll revert to a formula that itself hasn't been a great hit?

Remember the show is not targeted at us, so don't treat it as an insult to our intelligence.

But it's not insulting kids' intelligence? It's not as though kids will only watch things with the content Kyoryuger and many Toei tokus now have. And it's not like the opposite of Kyoryuger is some adult-exclusive drama dripping in brutal realism.

So it's okay to treat the target audience like idiots? I can tell the show is talking way down to kids and appeals only to the sugar-high ADD crowd. The show has virtually no depth to speak of and is literally just throwing dozens of toys at the audience to gobble up. Dekaranger at least had a cast I cared about and some interesting new ideas for the series. Kyoryuger is Toei at its laziest, tracing their steps backwards after their risk to actually make the franchise evolve backfired last year.

Most kids I know, smart or not, appreciate slapstick and physical humor. Just watch what's on Nickelodeon and Disney. There are also plenty of smart people who'd enjoy things like Jersey Shore and Honey Boo Boo.

I think it's you who're treating people who like stuff you don't like as idiots. And that's extremely elitist. This show decided to cater to a larger audience that isn't you and you came to tokusatsu, especially Super Hero Time expecting to see that kind of atmosphere catered to children. You then turn your eye away from the good elements of the show, because the kid's stuff "annoys" you.

Frankly, I'd rather not have dark moments in Sentai/KR. The moments just before the climax are usually the ones I dread the most. I watch these shows for escapism, not for literary genius.

And compare that to what those channels used to offer. You might see a difference.

Then they're not that smart :P At least Sentai is about heroes and good vs. evil. Those two shows are just trash.

Wouldn't 80s and 90s Sentai have had the larger audience, since they were aimed for families in general and not just the littlest of kids? And given Japan's birthrate, exactly how large an audience would the littlest of kids be?

You then turn your eye away from the good elements of the show, because the kid's stuff "annoys" you.

You say "kids' stuff" as though implying that if one doesn't like some aspects of that, then they hate the whole thing.

Do you feel that way about American superheroes?

And not wanting cartoony wackiness doesn't equal wanting "literary genius", whatever that may mean.

No, there isn't. I've seen all iterations of Mickey Mouse, Looney Tunes, Scooby Doo, etc., and they're basically still the same as that cartoon with the cockroaches and SpongeBob. Tom and Jerry is still around. I have a nephew who's 6 so I somewhat keep in touch.

Then they're not that smart :P At least Sentai is about heroes and good vs. evil. Those two shows are just trash.

I highly doubt you're smarter than them . And yes, those are trash shows by in my opinion, but they enjoy those shows and probably think tokusatsu is trash, too.

I don't see the relevance. The point is that it's not aimed for us. It's aimed for a group that doesn't include us.

You say "kids' stuff" as though implying that if one doesn't like some aspects of that, then they hate the whole thing.

You're the one who claimed that you're like that . You said that you cannot enjoy the show because you're annoyed by the gags "as Toei does it".

Do you feel that way about American superheroes?

Yes, I do.

And not wanting cartoony wackiness doesn't equal wanting "literary genius", whatever that may mean.

I didn't say that. I don't have a problem with anyone not wanting cartoony wackiness. I simply find it odd that people go in expecting to watch a kid's show, and then getting turned off because it has something that kid's shows do. It boggles my mind.
