your opinion on telemarketers

I honestly dont give a crap about telemarketers. I only pick up the phone if I can see who is calling on the caller ID and if I cant see who it is, I just dont pick up. I have no problems with letting the phone ring.

Every single telemarketer I've encountered is rude. They refuse to follow Federal law (my number is on the DO NOT CALL list) and refuse to remove my number. What's worse is that "charities" are exempt from the DO NOT CALL and CAN solicit a person under certain conditions. Those "charity" calls are worse then normal solicitors because they refuse to take NO for answer and even use tactics like, "but won't you feel bad?" Pft, I feel bad when money leaves my pocket for some stupid scam.

Case in point, we keep getting phone calls (despite me telling every single one to not call back and remove my number from their database) from a "charity" called "WA Lodge Association" (caller id). This "charity" will then identify itself as "American Association of State Troopers Washington Lodge" or as "Washington Lodge of the American Association of State Troopers". I listened to the guy's script once (only because he refused to listen to me) and they make it sound as if they are associated with the Washington State Troopers Association (legit charity that belongs to the WASP department). They're not associated and in reality, the organization is based in FLORIDA! Pft, not getting my money.

Then there have been the phone calls from the charities looking for people to donate to the "(Local) County Dive and Rescue" but the problem with that is that the local county dive and rescue do NOT solicits over the phone and have said so numerous times in the local news media. They have said that such phone calls are typically from "charity" scammers on the opposite side of the state or are in other states. The only time they solicit for money is when they go to the media and tell them something like, "hey we're going to be selling raffle tickets from this date to that date. You can buy them at this location and that location." Last time I received one of those phone calls the guy actually had the balls to say, "well what if your child fell in the river and drowned but it could have prevented by new equipment for those divers?" My reply was, "Well, I'm sorry you feel that way but considering the (local) County Dive and Rescue doesn't soliciate over the phone, I can't give my money to a scammer even if you are trying to make me feel bad." The guy cussed me out then hung up. lol

I could go on and on about the telemarketing calls I get ranging from "you won! but we need your bank info" to "hi, we're calling to offer you a credit card". People who work for telemarketing companies are either very brave (because there is the chance they won't get paid) or very stupid or very crooked.

As for caller id, I can't ignore the calls even if it's listed as "private" because many times the local school's number comes up as "private" or "unknown" when the teachers are using an inside line rather then the main line.

Guess what. If MeowCompany calls you and you clearly say "Do not call me back/Take me off your call list" they are obligated by law to do so. If they call you again, afterwards, you can sue them. It's happened before.

If Telemarketers bother you so much, start recording your phone calls and take some of them to court.

"Court costs money"

There are thousands of lawyers/attornies who will take payment after winning a case. Which is fine if you win and some dont ask for anything if you lose.

As for "private numbers", they can leave a message can't they? That's my policy, the answering machine is there for a reason. They can leave me a message to call them back if it's important or I will pick up during the "message" if I want to talk to them.

I've just never had a problem with telemarketers. If I pick up the phone and somehow one is trying to speak to me, I say "not interested" and hang up. It's that simple.

Filing a lawsuit costs money as well. ;)

I got rid of the voicemail because it was constantly full with half messages from pre-recorded messages or companies that use that annoying, "Please hold until...." messages.

Well that's you. :P I've had some where I told them, "I'm not interested, remove me for you list" then hung up on them only to be called back SEVERAL more times.

So do drug dealers. That doesn't mean that I have to give a damn. There's more than one way to earn a living.

Agreed.

Well I don't mean to be difficult but if it's that much of a problem, I would definitely take this to court. If it's gotten that bad, sure it might cost money, but when you win the case you'll get that money back and even more.

That's just what I would do though and it would shut up some of the telemarketers.

Everyone has to make a living, but remember when there was door to door salesman? Would you really keep saying "everyone has to make a living" if you constantly had someone at the door trying to sell you something? Patience wears thin sometimes.

I avoid these people through the Magic of Caller ID. If I don't know who it is, or it comes up unknown or something like that, the machine picks it up.
