wtf AOL...

Ok last night I was on AIM, and I was messing around with this software that automatically logs everything you do on aim. I got it off some hackers site, but it's legal since all it does is log your IMs and chat activity on your computer...so I thought..>.>

So I was in a chatroom and a AOL agent comes in there. It then says ''Cease and desist your hacking now before we take legal action'' I was like WTF so I IMed this agent and they said they have been watching my activity for the past few days. I guess whenever some one uses any sort of third party software on AIM it triggers a ''Holy **** it's a 1337'' alarm on AOL and they keep track of you. So this agent tells me my IP addressee and then tells me my real addressee, at that point I sorta got scared since it said that if I don't stop using the software it'll take legal action and send law enforcement to my location. So I uninstalled the software and everything is cool now. The agent said the next time it sees any of that on my AIM account or my IP they'll track me and take serious action.

The thing is, no where did it said ''We are NOT sending law enforcement to your home'' because before it left the chatroom, it said ''We are now taking legal action'' and something about the police or whatever, So I had to delete all my logs software and **** , stashed and trashed some files, and hoped the FBI won't be knocking my door down with machine guns within the next 24 hours.:confused2

Lesson here: NEVER download and use ANY third party software on AIM, Yahoo, or any other service unless the software being used it certified legal.

The only thing they can do to you is block you from using their services. They can take legal action but it will take time to find out your personal info and slap a lawsuit against you. Even then it will be hard for them to prove anything if you don't have a static IP.

This agent said that have my Ip adresse. The IP he showed me for some reason leads to another town a few miles from here.

That might be my ISP's adresse.

That was your first mistake right there. NOTHING that you get from a known hacker's site is legal. And trust me, if YOU know he's a hacker, a company like AOL will know he's a hacker.

You shouldn't be DL'ing any extra software for any IM services like these anyway. There's no point. They already come with everything you need. DLing extra programs like that is just pointless, not to mention (as is demonstrated by your personal experience), that they can possibly get you into trouble.
