Good post, Bolt, but I'd like to add something else -- a screw-off to the mindless zombies who just enjoy everything. The ones like, "Doi, I like everything. '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s and beyond -- as long as there's a tokusatsu, there's something I like. There is no bad tokusatsu, it's all Heaven sent." I don't understand those people! Either they're zombies or Toei's whores! At least you know where you stand with certain people. "Oh, they're an Ishinomori-lover. Uh-oh, they worship Kento Handa." Where do you stand with the zombies? What's the pits is that the zombies are the ones who do the most lecturing. "Oh, why do you bitch, Shougo? It's all giruma-maji-good."

This goes beyond tokusatsu, too. You can find it with any sort of film series, TV show, director, musician...HTF are these zombies born?

Is that a response to my "shifting gears" and "enjoy different things from different eras in different ways" to say it's being a mindless zombie to jus tlike everything?

It wasn't a response directly to your post, really, but your post reminded me of those sorts of comments when this tired old topic comes up.

People say I have a problem for hating everything (which is an exaggeration, any road). But I think there's more of a problem if someone likes everything. Or, I should have made more clear, what I find the most annoying is when people just like the new show simply because it's new. It happens nearly every year where people are just urinating themselves over the new show, not judging the show for what it's worth (or not worth). It's in a similar category as the "love-everythingitis," but I think it's a harsher ailment.

I remember when this very discussion was had at Japan Access. Kage said something akin to "[The bitching] will stop when they start making good shows again." That should be my quote...

I'd just like to say that tokusatsu in '05 has especially sucked. I've only enjoyed Garo, but I still think it's a bit hollow and unoriginal.

So, er...um...WTF was this topic about?

That's a good point. Before Magiranger had even started I remember having some wtf's for the people that already proudly displayed Magiranger avatars and banners saying things like "The Ultimate Sentai Is Here...", etc.
Another thing that gets my goat is folks that dislike something that they haven't even seen. People were already passing judgement on Hibiki (which I think is a pretty cool, fun show) just because they didn't like his costume. It especially bothers me when they diss something older like Amazon, V3, Kikaida, Denjiman, Kyodain, and anything else that TV Nihon hasn't started subbing because it's not "the 200X thing."

I think there will always be people like this though. I've been noticing recently that after only a few people like MJRM, Basri, and Shougo praised Maskman, everyone suddenly is in love with Maskman. The same thing happened earlier this year when there was a random explosion of Kamen Rider Black's popularity, while if you'd mentioned Black during Faiz's run (before Black was being "subbed" on the 'net) it would've been dismissed as old and stale.

Dammit, ShadowRider... that was a good post, why'd you delete it?

I almost wish I could turn off the feature, cuz people keep deleting good posts for what seems to me, like no good reason.

I dunno....

Anyway, I must be missing it, cuz I don't see the dissing of the old school... well, ever. I see it a lot less than the dissing of the new school which I see near everyday.

My take... if they like Magiranger... let 'em. They don't like it for the reasons that you liked the other older shows. They like it for whatever reason they do. I'm glad folk enjoy it. Better to have a good time than be grumpy.

I was glad peopled liked Ninja Storm, cuz it makes me glad to know people are having a good time and so long as the show is loved, there's a chance to turn it around and maybe have the show turn back into something I like.

I think people hated on Hibiki was that people come to see a hero stomp his foot down, do arm stuff and cry out, "HENSHIN!!" to then kick some monster ass.... not watch a quasi-musical.

I felt the same way, but when I saw I wasn't going to be getting what I wanted, I just shifted gears to see how well the show did what it was going for and found there was some amusement to find in it. I might check it out someday.

As for the Maskman love, interest gets piqued. You see enough curious and cool pictures and you start to want to know more. People you like sing the praises of something, it makes you wonder why. That's just how interests go.

As for Black being dissed... can't say I ever saw that, especially not in comparison to Faiz.

See, it's answers like this that make me think you haven't even seen the show. It's NOT a quasi-musical. It does have musical elements, but that's like saying Denjiman is like watching a soccer game or a boxing match because there were sports elements or that, well, Magiranger is a magic trick show.

If you want to look at it like that, then there have been hundreds of shows EXACTLY like that in the past (which is exactly where nobody looks, ironically enough). At least Hibiki tried a new approach.

Is it still simple interest when someone declares a show one of their favorites when they haven't even seen it?

Haha, it had nothing to do with a comparison to Faiz dude... what I was saying is before whoever it was started putting up those Black subs, there was about as much discussion of Kamen Rider Black as there was about Megaloman or Robocon. Then suddenly everyone is like "omg this show is so dark and is also teh best raidaa show evur!11!!". You see it all the time whenever something new comes out and all of a sudden there's a burst of seemingly unwarranted popularity.

It's answers like this that show you the first impressions the show gives off. I've seen about the first four and it's flavor didn't exactally snag me.

Like I said, there's goodness there, but not what I wanted. Another time tho, I'm up for finding out what good the show has to offer.

But more people just don't have the time or want to give a show more than an initial impression's chance.

And that's what all these critical posts have been about: people buying into initial impressions without any kind of basis for their opinions, be they positive or negative. I didn't start like Hibiki until at least episode 8 or 9, but then, I've never been the kind of person to buy into hype only to be disappointed and totally give up on a show because it's not exactly what I'm looking for (when is it ever?)
