Will Smith loves Ultraman

Sorry to bust your bubble but anime in Japan is referred to, sometimes, as Japanimation. Even my 15th Anniversary AIC book calls it Japanimation in its section about Anime in America.

A black Ultraman! :p

If an american actor can make an Ultraman adaptation cool it has to be Will Smith

Haha, Will Smith doing the Ultra pose is great. I've always liked him, but I never thought he was an Ultraman fan.

I should track down Vol. 2, as I only have Vol. 1 of the original Ultraman.

That's cool about him being on that show doing that. However, most Americans don't know anything about Ultraman so for him to talk about it on Leno was great.

Thats why he is playing hancock....Because he is almost Ultraman! Minus the beams and super size.
Wonder is he likes Kamen Rider?
Imagine him doing the classic trademark pose!

Wow, the Fresh Prince of Nebula M-78. Backed up by Kamen Rider Double J (for Jazzy Jeff), Beatbox Sentai Biz Markie 5?

There's something about Will Smith diggin Ultraman that is both cool and hilarious at the same time. Also interesting to know he watches anime with his family.

As for actually having him play Ultraman well I think the dude can act so it would greatly depend on all the other elements like the script, the direction, how they treated the concept and the material overall. Which I'm not sure I trust Hollywood with at all. Who am I kidding? I know I don't.

Also would they basically adapt Hayata's story into one with an American protag? or create a new Ultraman origin story altogether? Another problem would be that Hollywood views CGI as the answer to everything. It's like a crush and what this movie would need is to incorperate the Japanese approach of CGI as another tool in the box to be combined with traditional suitwork and set building. Only with a Hollywood budget you could take this game to a new level.

I know I'd prefer something straight faced but not too overly dark and serious. I'd also like to see use of the themes from Ultraman such as his being the light of human hope and think if they treated that sincerely and allowed a little room for Wills humor it might balance pretty well. But then again it could just degenerate into Fresh Prince vs. Kaiju.

For some reason I keep seeing something that would be like if you took his fighter pilot character from ID4 only gave him a lmore sincerity and depth instead of just being a walking one-liner. Basically you could make the Science Patrol a muliticultural group in a future that is on the verge of a brand new era of peace and enviormental healing but there's one thing that stands in the way of all that. Huge freakin monsters from space. (aint it always?) He's a guy who is proud to be part of the patrol but feels like he wants and needs to make some kind of bigger difference.

..okay now I'm rambling. :redface2:
