What should be #1 in fansubbing

Both, though more the 2nd choice then the 1st, I don't care about Karaoke, I have to be in an absolute cheery mood to care. lol

But the nice designs of words and what not are cool, shows that they take pride in what they do, and have fun with it.

I think the second option is most important above ALL else.

For example:

I watched Decade, ep. 1 on veoh.com. I don't know WHO translated it, but at times I was left going, "Huh?"

Then I rewatched the tv nihon version of Decade, Ep 1 and it made MUCH more sense. I want to know what's happening in the story and dialogue.

Plus, sometimes fancy lettering/colours make the words harder to read at the fast pace they show up on the screen....sadly TV Nihon has started doing this weird thing, I think its when the rider belt is talking, where colours move back and forth over the words...I hope that made some sort of sense lol.

Tv-nihon is typesetting what is already in english in big red letters. I mean I watched their ep1 and you hear and see FINAL ATTACK RIDE. That is in the raw and on screen. T-N subs it and has an effect for something already there. Why I ask?

I watched an anime fansub that had 3 lines of karaoke. The group I think was called Mahou. It was an ep of Gravion. The karaoke was DURING a fight scene in the middle of the ep.

Yeah, I noticed that too. It's like, the screen is flashing: ATTACK RIDE ATTACK RIDE HEY GUESS WHAT ATTACK RIDE!

It's like, " Okay...we get it."

But I guess I shouldn't complain since they're doing all the hard work for free and I'm able to see it in English at all.

Yup they sure are doing it for free. At least we have options for what we watch.

Translation/ efficiency/ consistency :anime:

With stuff like karaoke... When it's for the OP/ EDs, the songs SHOULD be subbed unless there's a viable reason not to (i.e. ALI PROJECT). For karaoke in insert songs, it's not really that big a deal usually, but there are some series where it's more important, like Macross, where music is a MAJOR component of the series.

Effects... They can be cool, but the important thing is that they aren't distracting, they should be kept simple and use an easy to read font.

i know some people aren't going to be very happy with me if i say this, but i often grade a fansub based solely on the translation

i'm not all that picky over grammar or editing if it's not ridiculously obvious that they needed one other person to read it, but it irritates me to no end if the translations are wrong. i've seen many translations in which the whole tense of the sentence is completely opposite from what has been translated. i've seen some subs with completely awesome timing/typesetter/encoder teams only to end up laughing my butt off at the translations. i guess really its more the fact that most other people aren't going to understand what was really meant, but instead are going to go off the translation that irritates me.... but, hey, wouldn't that irritate anyone?

If I were told that I could only have one choice or the other, I'd stick with having a good, proper translation. The effects and what not are nice and all, but in the long run not absolutely necessary.
