For someone who started with TVN as his first toku sub group: I didn't think they where that bad at first. It was the super-modding and policeing on their forum that drove me away. I enjoyed their Magi-ranger, Shinkenger and Den-O releases.
But then I found HJU. It opened my eyes and world to W-Time, GUIS and the Order of Zeronos. I started watching their releases. Then W-Time became Over-Time and I stuck with them ever since, picking up classic shows from GUIS. Why? because their approach suits me and fulfills my needs. I UNDERSTAND what was being said on screen.
Leaving stuff like honorifics in is a choice, not translating attack names and mecha names is so as well. But where do you stop. They've proven to some of us that their approach to fansubbing can misfire with Akibaranger (is it really THAT bad? Now I NEED to see their release...).
I also feel so much anger in Takaneko's blog. I think I can relate. I wouldn't like it is someone would poke fun at something you put blood, sweat and tears into creating. I've been in that position myself as Convention Staff. It bites. I would've like direct feedback as well.
I do like some of their releases and find myself checking back now and them. Their style doesn't suit me. But I still respect them. In subbing, I don't think there is a right or wrong. There is "your way of subbing". Yes the make mistakes. Who doesn't? It's how you correct them and how you treat those who point them out that matters. And to my opinion, in that department TVN has a lot to learn.
I also would like to add that I wholeheartingly agree with Magenta on his points.
Unless of course we're suggesting that complaining about subgroups is bad, and should be a banned topic, then I call Godwin's Law on that.
Ouch... But I can see how one would think that, given the first paragraph of this post...
