WATCHMEN sequel in the works!?!

Watchmen director Zack Snyder is adamant he will never direct a sequel to the new film - no matter how much money he is offered.

The moviemaker is pleased with his interpretation of the cult comic book, but insists the film would not work as a major movie franchise.

He says, "There's no way I would be involved in a sequel or prequel.

"Will they make one? I have no idea how you would. The work is the work. This movie is about ideas. Anything else you would do, if you did a sequel to it, misses the point entirely of what Watchmen is. To continue is to either rehash the same idea again or you're going to try to fix the characters, which goes against everything the book stands for, or you could pick up new characters. To me, philosophically, it just doesn't make sense."

But the film's star, Billy Crudup, admits the decision about a sequel lies with Hollywood bosses - because he has already signed a contract to make a Watchmen follow-up.

He adds, "Contractually, we are obligated. I will do it. I just don't know what it is we would do."

I'm absolutely against it.

Watchmen has been a highly respected graphic novel, because it was an epic one-shot story that had a strong message to it. It was a great statement, and nothing more needs to be said. The rest is left up to one's imagination.

Doing a sequel will only do the original story/characters great injustice, and cheapen them. Alan Moore will have a cow when he hears about this.

I think it's way to early for a sequel. WATCHMEN was released just recently, and they shouldn't rush a sequel so soon.

Right on.

Alan Moore's stuff is meant to be read, not watched. People who watch this will only show their disrespect not just to the intent of Watchmen, but also comics

I disagree. ALL depends.... and I'm always willing to give a new property a chance.

So I suppose Dave Gibbons is a sellout, huh? And really, Alan Moore hates ALL movies based on his work. Even if they are really good, like V, he just doesn't care for them. And that's his choice.

And saying that people who watch this movie are disrespectful to comics is pretty funny. First of all, I will decide for myself how true it is to the comic. Also, it's everyone's right to form their own opinion. Making a statement as sweeping as that one makes you come off sounding like a snob. And the reason I am writing all this is, I know you are NOT a snob, and are a pretty cool guy. It's just that that statement makes you look like a d-bag. Lighten up.

EDIT: back to the topic of this thread, making a sequel/prequedl is a STUPID idea. One of the reasons Watchmen was so great was that you learned so much about who these people were in such a short space. The whole story is contained in those 12 issues. There really is nothing more to do with these characters. It would be pretty scummy to take this comic, which is the antithesis of a 'superhero' story (deep characters, digression from typical story structure) and make a cheap money-grabbing sequel. There is no cliffhanger ending. No need for a followup. I hope Gibbons and Moore fight it if that's what they decide to do. Making a sequel, THAT would be disrespectful. That I would say every comic fan should boycott if that happens. But as for the movie itself, as long as it stays true to the comic, why not?

Oh give me a break. That just sounds like comic elitist bullshit. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I will judge it based on it's merits. Moore isn't mr.perfect.
