What is it with American production studios and the need to make everything look "realistic"?
It's not about making something realistic, it's about making it believable for a general audience. And while boxy 3d robots would probably cause a chain reaction of fangasms, it would end with the Voltron fanbase. The general audience is most likely to accept something that looks functional.
I know virtually nothing about Voltron, and the concept art was enough to pique my interest. It looks like there's a departure from what it looks like in the cartoon, but all the design elements are still there and it's recognizably Voltron. Are you really comparing:
