Disney set to launch new HD channels

Walt Disney Co. will launch four new high-definition channels, including ESPNews HD, on March 30, the fifth anniversary of the launch of ESPN HD.

ESPNews HD and ESPNews in standard definition will be separate productions, not simulcasts, the company said. ESPNews has 63 million subscribers. ESPNews HD will reach about 3.2 million homes at launch, a figure expected to grow to about 8 million at the end of the year.

Disney also will launch Disney Channel HD, Toon Disney HD and ABC Family HD on March 30.

And ESPNU HD is scheduled to launch on Aug. 28, in time for the 2008 college football season.

Next year will probably be in HD then, regardless of whether it's live action or animated. PR is Toon Disney's pinnacle series, so its progression into HD should be fairly swift.

Side-note: Jetix Europe has been producing in HD for a few years now, in anticipation of Jetix HD, so the European shows that air on TD should be in HD next week.
