too many gimmicks in sentai and kamen rider?

That's for damn sure. No more surprise effect.

Not to mention the heroes really giving a damn about the mechas they do have.

The only gimmick from W I hate is Accel's bike form because it's basically a hold-over of Final Form Ride's in Decade which IMO is the single worst gimmick Bandai has ever seen fit to put on Rider. Plus this results in Accel's rather unfortunate looking link up to RevolGarry.

To be fair the bike form boded with some Dopants' "second form" like T-Rex and Anomalocaris. The difference between it and other instances like the Orphenochs is that they made a toy out of it.

Gokaiger handled it well, and it made sense for the series itself to have the change feature that it did. It was never overblown, and the team could function just fine without the feature.

I wish the change feature didn't exist in Gokaiger. It had no practical purpose like Decade arguably could, and to go to such lengths to give sex changes to costumes?

A gimmick can break a show if the gimmick becomes a higher priority than even the most basic aspects of telling a story. I don't think anyone here necessarily has a problem with the shows needing sell toys but it still needs to be a good tv show. It still needs to at least attempt to tell a good story.

Yeah it don't have to be Shakespeare but it should not be used as an excuse to just string the toy debuts together.

I don't remember a gimmick that was so shitty it ruined a show for me.

So long as people will still buy dozens of fake flash drives, plastic medals, plastic keys, or whatever else, we're going to keep seeing these gimmicks in tokusatsu. If it's handled well, I usually don't mind. The only time I really get annoyed with the merchandizing aspect of these shows is when things are shoehorned in with no reason other than to promote toys - the way Kiva did it.

only issue i had kiva although i didnt watch it just parts of it like transformations and finishers was the Tatsulot brace as toy and on the show because on the toy it was random and it should have designed it to go in order and on the show because you dont know what attack is going to be used, they was just a big goof on it.

another issue is with kamen den-o's dengasher weapon parts/swapping gimmick, i mean they should designed it more like one piece into four piece changing gimmick in one weapon without swapping parts because it gets confusing on which piece goes where on the weapon, it should have had an auto change button gimmick on the weapon to make it easier to change, rather become an exercise prop.

like i said with fourze and ooo, the medals and switches are a pain because it's swapping so many combos/switches, it confuses the life out of you, i mean for a collection gimmick i can understand, but to spam it on the show it's mind blowing. like two episodes ago, when fourze was trying to defeat Pegasus Zodiarts, it's like spaming switches every minute or two instead of using one switch or two, to defeat the monster, it's like what's the fun in this? it's more like an exercise program or something.

im glad with secondary riders they dont spam stuff onto them, because you dont need 40 switches or 30 medals to defeat a monster.

What do you mean? The change feature is what made them really versatile. Need to fight hand to hand, and they'd go with martial arts rangers like Dai, Geki, and Mask. If they needed heavy armor, they'd go with armored rangers like DragonRanger. If they needed to fly, there's Goseiger, Jetman, and Go-on Wings. And some changes would be used if they needed to run away.

That practical purpose was shown throughout the series. One of the last ones is how Marvelous and Gai escaped from the Gigant Horse. Just because it's subtle doesn't mean it wasn't there.

I can't help but think Toku might remain like this for another two decades at least, While i also am not big on gimmicks Toei and others seem to need the money badly, I think this is one of those things we may have to get used to.

I'd wait to see Fourze's toy sales numbers before making a prediction like that. While I think the "tiny versatile gimmick" toys are here for awhile, I really think heroes having totally different powers in each episode probably has something to do with the ratings decline Sentai and Rider are locked in now.

I don't think it's coincidental that the last Gokaiger episode to crack 6% was when they got the team cannon upgrade. This is one of the few Gokaiger upgrades that is completely explained in narrative terms and feels like the logical outcome of a good story.

What I imagine is that Toei is going to play with different ways of doing collector gimmicks in the upcoming years, trying to find a happy medium between getting consistent strong ratings and consistent strong toy sales. Right now I think the gimmicks are starting to have an impact on the shows, and not always a good one.

What's wrong with that?

Because a male HurricaneBlue, MagiBlue, and Pinks in general look hideous.

Well there you go. So many choices for what? With all these powers why bother even having their own? What do the Gokaiger powers do other than letting you change into other teams' suits that the others can't? Why do they need to change suits in order to perform certain abilities? What happened to simple ingenuity with the stuff you have? This is something that you see less and less in Toei tokus now that we get something new every few episodes for the past decade or so.

So, your changing your argument? First, they had no practical purpose, now it had no ingenuity?

That's the entire point of being pirates, doncha think? They don't have anything of their own so they use others'.
