Tokusatsus from around the world

You can add Zaido, which is from the Philippines.

Lol, there's a lot of stuff from the Philippines that would make the definition of tokusatsu that Filipino tokusatsu fans would rather the rest of the world not know existed.

From the classics alone there are: Darna, Panday, Captain Barbell and Dyesebel, all of which have at least two movies and two TV series to them.

I know those shows can be considered toku but it is only Zaido that has Japanese tokusatsu elements to it, not to mention that Zaido is also directly connected to Shaider.

Personally, I consider tokusatsu to be live action or stop-motion/puppet shows, that use practical effects, as opposed to computer effects. Granted, there's going to be both used, especially in newer stuff, but it's what the focus is on. Doctor Who is an interesting case, because while I'd consider Classic Who to be tokusatsu, as there's a lot of practical effects, New Who uses mostly computer effects, and I wouldn't consider it. Smallville I don't agree with being on Wikipedia's list at all, and Battlestar Galactica's the same as DW: older yes, newer no.

Reading both the English wiki page, and the google translation of the Japanese page, it seems that the term is supposed to reference to shows where the focus is on the effects.

This sort of rigid definition makes most modern tokusatsu in Japan disqualified as it uses computer effects. Though I do agree that CGI is used sometimes as a lazy way out, it can nonetheless help when its well blended and adds to it.

It's why I like the Amzing Spider-Man over the first three films this way, although those were great.

Computer or not, all it matters is that its special effects, not just a minor thing.

Does the Marvel Cinematic universe not count, or are we only doing series?

If so what about the old Batman series, Flash series, Robocop, Star Trek, and The Green Hornet. Also no Giant Robo? I havn't seen much of it, but it is all Toku.

My that looks gloriously shyte! It's like someone tried to make a live-action mix of Terminator and that old Centurians cartoon, but with a budget of whatever spare change they could find down the back of the sofa :anime:

Apparently Doctor Who is considered a toku in Japan. This is what I meant before when I said that we'd have to define toku. If you just go with "anything that has an emphasis on the special effects" you're going to end up with the majority of sci-fi, fantasy, horror and action films ever made. You can make fairly strong cases for certain things like King Kong or Doctor Who, but has anyone ever been watching The Muppets or Home Alone and thought of them as toku?
