Tokusatsus from around the world

Is the TC keeping the list updated? It looks like (s)he is not.

Don't know what TC is... but I guess you mean me... in which case I am... just wanting to wait until a large amount is posted before I update the list...

and now we are on the discussion of "what is Toku" that is going on

also that post by Dessa... that is included into the discussion

TC stands for "Topic Creator". It's fairly common forum lingo. OP stands for "Original Post" or "Opening Post" or sometimes "Original Poster", so Glam prefers TC since it's less ambiguous.

Personally, I consider tokusatsu to be live action or stop-motion/puppet shows, that use practical effects, as opposed to computer effects. Granted, there's going to be both used, especially in newer stuff, but it's what the focus is on. Doctor Who is an interesting case, because while I'd consider Classic Who to be tokusatsu, as there's a lot of practical effects, New Who uses mostly computer effects, and I wouldn't consider it. Smallville I don't agree with being on Wikipedia's list at all, and Battlestar Galactica's the same as DW: older yes, newer no.

Reading both the English wiki page, and the google translation of the Japanese page, it seems that the term is supposed to reference to shows where the focus is on the effects.

Yeah, the term just means "special effects." From the Japanese perspective, anything made anywhere with an emphasis on FX shots is tokusatsu. So the term encompasses the Gerry Anderson shows, Star Trek, Star Wars, a lot of American blockbusters, etc. Whether or not a superhero is there is irrelevant; there's plenty of Japanese-made tokusatsu that does not feature superheroes (Mighty Jack, Yamato 2012, The Hero Yoshihiko).

Now, Western fans seem to want tokusatsu to be a more specialized term, so it can be used to refer to things besides our own TV shows and movies, but there's not a lot of agreement on how it should be specialized. I think just about everyone would agree that it refers to Toei Superhero productions, basically anything Tsuburaya does, and kaiju flicks. There's less agreement on why that is, and what would be excluded.

I'd like to place this on the table if I may

X-Bomber/Star Fleet

It was produced by Go Nagi and was done in a similar style to Thunderbirds
