Toku shows that are despised by the fandom that you love or think are ok

I just started Kamen Rider Decade, can someone please explain why it gets so much hate? I am really enjoying it.

It's meant as a big anniversary show, but doesn't really do justice to the previous Kamen Riders. Since they couldn't get a hold of most of the old actors, they do a "parallel world" thing where it's the same Rider suit and powers, but not the same person or world. Many of them are just handled badly and don't really give the old fans of those shows what they wanted. Particularly Kuuga, arguably one of the all time greatest Rider shows, who's basically treated like a comedy sidekick.

The overall story is also totally incoherent (mainly towards the end and especially the finale itself) and many just disliked the characters. The TVN subs doing their usual job of botching translations doesn't help those problems.

Bear in mind that when Decade was on the air, it was a lot more liked than it is now. The ending turned a lot of people against it pretty much overnight. And like Gokaiger, as time has gone on it's got a lot of "bawwwww it doesn't have its own story, it's nothing but ~nostalgia~, blah blah blah"

Decade was also more liked during the first half of the show that focused on the Heisei worlds. Later on, with the exception of the Black episodes, people started to complain that the show was running out of steam (I remember exceptionally vitriolic commentary about the Amazon eps, fans really seemed to hate Enrique Sakamoto ...)

True. I thought was fine at first. Tsukasa was a jerk but I felt the things he has been doing were changing him for the better. Maybe, with this change he can undo whatever mistake he did in the past.

Then the show started to actually explain its plot then it got worse and worse.

I see, so a new fan would enjoy more than a veteran. I can kind of see it now after getting to the half way mark.

For the record, I actually like Tsukasa as a character. He is arrogant but I actually like that type of character. The whole "this guy fights for good, so he must be nice" is kind of a cliche that I have grown to hate. Also, I think the gear kicks ass.

I will have to revisit the series when I get caught up with the other riders. I guess I will have to watch Kuuga next.

You raise an interesting point there. While I personally hate arrogant Riders, with the exception of Tendou (who is so OTT that he can't be taken seriously) ... a lot of people say they love that character type and want to see more of it, yet whenever we get one, they complain. A lot of the fandom dislikes Tsukasa, Tendou and Takumi. When Wizard began, people were initially interested in Haruto because he seemed cockier and less "nice" than his most recent predecessors ... then quickly started complaining that he was boring

Decade was my first Rider show. I can see how people would prefer to see the Riders they liked rather than AU versions, but I thought the initial nine worlds were quite well written, with Tsukasa becoming slightly more heroic with every world he visits and his experiences there, often taking AU Kuuga's advice even while claiming not to.

Sadly after those nine worlds the original writer bowed out and the replacement writer (Inoue?) seemingly had no interest in continuing the story, advancing the characters, or anything really beyond filling the time and collecting their paychecks. It's not all horrible (as someone who finds Amazon a weaker entry in the franchise, the re-imagined version actually seemed more interesting to me) but overall it's a mess and nobody's ever tried picking up the pieces despite Decade's many return appearances.

Funnily enough I also plan on re-watching the show after I've seen the shows for all the Riders who had AU worlds. I've only Black RX to go, but I think I'll wait and see if the announced MillionFold Curiosities sub of Decade appears before I make a second journey through the Decade.

The no yellow thing wasn't a movement but ignorance. for kYORYUGER though.

I don't think Kyoryuger and Wizard had anything in common. While people were initially pretty excited about Wizard, it had dull characters, almost no plot and everyone lost interest long before the half-way mark. I don't think it's quite as bad as some people, but it really wasn't a very good show.

Kyoryuger on the other hand was very plot focused, spent a lot of time developing the characters and generally kept people interested through-out. Although personally I never understood any of the complaints about the ending, so there could be something I'm missing there. The only thing I can say about it is that the final episode served more as a conclusion, whereas the second last one was the big explosive action episode with the full team roll call and so on. It works best if you look at it as one big finale.

Wizard was tight. I liked it. But that movie was stupid as ****. The Magic Land one I mean.

Kyoryuger should've had more done with it. yes, I liked it but 48 was **** to me. Maybe Cyan should've shown up later. instead of 5 episodes in.

Ignorance of what, exactly? Japanese fans wanted a second female Ranger (which Toei acknowledged when Yayoi became Violet) and reportedly found the producer's comments stupid. Audiences complained as far back as the 1970s when Sun Vulcan had no female Rangers. Japan may not be the world's most enlightened country but it's not true that viewers don't notice when female characters are omitted from a show.

Not every yellow is female. In fact, most of them aren't actually maybe I should do a count. However I doubt that was ever the issue.

Also, I apologize for being a bit pedantic, but Sun Vulcan came out in 1981.

Yes, it did, you're quite right ...

You're also right that not all Yellows are female (I think it's about even now?) But the producer specifically said that the reason for lack of a Yellow was that kids would expect the character to be female.
