Today's my Anniversary!

I'm mainly an Asian cinema fan, especially action and martial arts films, and when I was like 13 I rented the Shaw Brothers' films Shaolin Temple, Shaolin Challenges Ninja (starring the ever-talented Yasuaki Kurata), Kid With The Golden Arm, and borrowed a tape of a "Shaw Brothers toe-koo movie," Super Inframan (starring the ever-talented Danny Lee), from a Japanese friend. At the end of the Inframan tape there were 2 episodes of the original Kamen Rider series and when I watched them I was like "WTF this is lame." And it was. Compared to Inframan at least. So I stuck with Kung Fu for a while and eventually got interested in tokusatsu after rewatching those episodes a lot and then getting Denjiman, Zubat, and Kikaida. I started watching modern tokusatsu at Hurricanger and was sort of thrown off, but I liked Abaranger more. I also learned that I like modern Rider shows a whole lot more than sentai. So yeah, it's been like 6 years.

First of all, happy anniversary :198:

Well outside of Godzilla and Gamera, I discovered it back in elementary school. One of the local stations out of Chicago was airing a show call Spectreman. I was hooked almost instantly. Then the same station started showing Ultraman, which I promptly called a Specctreman rip off (I didn't know any better :confused2 ) . Years later I started watching TNT run of Ultraseven and Power Rangers and it's spin offs. But it was looking up my old Spectreman show that showed me what else was out there

Well I knew about Sentai during MMPR as I owned some Maskman merchandise back then, namely the figures. Just the five Rangers, no X1.... :shakefist My Dad bought them during his trip to Japan when Maskman was airing and he bought them for his nephew originally and then my mom got pregnant (according to my calculations, they got busy on Christmas  .) Anywho, so he still had them laying around the house, actually in the attic but they were in a box protected really well. I fucking loved them! Beat the **** out of my Turtles they did! He taught me what he had learnt about Super Sentai when I was like 6 or 7, then 2 or 3 years ago the figures went bye-bye in a car-boot sale. :bawling: I got out of Power Rangers just after Time Force cos I thought Wild Force was lame, got back into it at the end of Ninja Storm. I'm kicking myself now! Those figures went for £1 EACH!!!

Mid-'85, about. While my family was in Japan, it was discovered (upon channel surfing) that I responded to Changeman. My parents began taping it for me. Flashman, Maskman, the first dozen Liveman following. Bioman also being in reruns at the time. Shows like Spielban, Metalder, Black and Jiraiya as well.

When we moved, I had my tapes, but didn't really think of tokusatsu going on. When PR came out and I saw it, I thought "They're taking those Japanese shows!" One day, in '96 or '97, I decided to look up the shows on the 'net, finding all of those sites that copied and pasted Marc Miyake's Sentai Manual, soon after that discovering Henshin Video, recreating a monster.

One strange thing for me was getting to see the pre-Bioman shows, which I always saw pictures of in various sentai "daishugo" books I had in the '80s...so they were kind of familiar, yet strange and different.

Nothing about Anniversary related to this thread or anything, just wanna say, Shougo! Nice siggy! I wonder where you get all these old pics, man.

I first got into Toku thanks to Power Rangers. I actually got into PR a little late--towards the end of the second season of MMPR to be exact. Shortly after I got into PR, I heard of Sentai, and I got curious. However, I wasn't able to get my hands on much Sentai then (other than a handful of video clips and some scattered episodes of Jetman, ZyuRanger, and MegaRanger), and I ended up losing interest in PR--I stopped watching during Lightspeed Rescue.

Somewhat over a year ago, in Spring 2004, my roommate (at the time--we no longer live together, but we're still friends) got into Toku, and because of him, I ended up getting back into it as well, and since we had broadband, I found that I had access to lots of shows I was never able to see before. The rest is history.

No I'm not married at 16!

Today's my One Year Anniversary of re-igniting the flame of Toku, I re-discovered it a year ago today! Hurray for me! :P How far have I gotten you say? Not far really, but I have explored the world of Toku quite a lot. I've seen Kamen Rider, old and new. Sentai, old and new. Ultraman, old and new. I own 3 box sets, and I shall soon have ZyuRanger here. :jam: So I have a question for you guys (and girls) out there. When did you discover Toku?

I have to say that this is one of the weirdest threads that I have ever read. I thought it was gonna be you and GF's anniversary and after reading it, it was for tokusatsu...

Umm....I discovered toku during 1985-86 via the dubbed version of Bioman.

Anyways, umm....happy anniversary bro!
