The "Say Something Nice About Go-Onger" Thread!

Considering the fact that the mecha, I mean Engines, have true personalities, is the reason I watched from beginning to end. That, plus Miu and Hiroto. They remind me of Andros (similarly streaked hair) and Karone from PR's In Space.

For one, while Shinkenger was the first I watched ay of, I wanted to watch Go-Onger, as the premise was absurd to me.

Favorite Sentai yet.

Also, every few days waiting for the new ending theme. Except the singing episodes. I'd just go to the next episode then.

I'm curious, can't people here enjoy a mostly-goofy series? It seems either serious or goofy/serious is more accepted.

I think Japanese and non-Japanese senses of humor are generally too different. Japanese comedy is still big on slapstick, for example, while American humor tends to frown on physical stuff as lowbrow and trashy unless it's, like, wildly creative Stephen Chow stuff.

Most Americans like satirical jokes, parody, wordplay, and situation or chracter-driven comedy-- really kind of cerebral things. This is present in Japanese comedy but isn't the type of humor Go-onger was going for. So, a lot of Western fans couldn't get into it.

Now, I couldn't get into Go-onger (which makes this thread fascinating to me), but I really liked Carranger. As it happens, Carranger features much more in the way of American-style humor-- tons of parody, satire, and dialog-driven jokes.

So, ultimately, I guess it's a matter of taste.

?I love how people try to compare all this different series to each other. Go-Onger really isnt like anything else thats come, except maybe Carranger. I've heard people compare Go-Onger to Carranger in a lot of ways, mainly because it DOESNT TAKE ITSELF SERIOUSLY.

Its a goofy series and it knows its a goofy series. If it doesnt take itself seriously, why should you?

First of all, Carranger was a parody from the get go. It was meant to poke fun at Sentai staples. Go-Onger is never declared as a parody (And even if it was it would be a terrible one). It's supposed to be the "typical" Sentai show. Or at least the typical '00 Sentai show full of vapidity and merchandise rivaling Noah's Flood. "Don't take it seriously" translates to "Ignore how badly it's made because it's just a silly kids' show."

In the words of Shougo, Go-Onger wishes it was Carranger.

Possibly, just that the taste is more in the majority to dislike Go-onger's style. For slapstick, that's something the Three Stooges and Chaplin built their careers on and are still enjoyed. I was thinking it's more of a overly-kiddy feel that drives people off. To compare to U.S kids shows:

Go-onger Magiranger Timeranger
Barney Beast Wars Gargoyles

Surprisingly I found myself liking the show despite what the major opinion was. I judged it on its own problems(weak villains, character development, random arcs) which have occurred in other Sentai (Dekaranger). I guess the kiddy feel of it drove off most people from the get-go.

Is that last part worth watching at all?

Ep 29 (I think) was awesome, the one where Miu gets injured. Definatley one of my fav Sentai eps lately.

But ya the 2nd half of the series does bring some good things including the Kyouretsu-O arc, the Cleaning Minister arc, and the finale was pretty good too.

Y'know, I really get tired of this flawed argument.

Saying something is a kids show DOES NOT mean flaws are being ignored. It means certain elements get emphasized in the story telling over others and if you want to enjoy the show, you have to accept that.

You dislike those elements and SOMETIMES they do get used in flawed storytelling. However, calling these elements "flaws" just for existing at all is inaccurate and closed-minded.

Well I was entertained in every single episode. It's a shame the same could not be said for the proclaimed 'serious' Shinkenger.
I really liked the characters and the engines and they ke[t me entertained every episode, and I actually laughed out loud during some of the antics they got up to.
Go-Onger is somewhere on the top of my list. :3

It doesn't? I sure as hell see it used often as a response to criticisms.

Well I don't accept that, and I don't enjoy the shows that overly emphasize so-called "kiddy" material.

Name me an example of when such material really enhanced the story.

Shinkenger was serious?
