The Returner - Talkback

Casshern has subs? I have a Japanese DVD of Casshern and it has indeed subs, but they are in Japanese for the hearing impared. Perhaps there are multiple versions?

My Returner (also JP release) has English subs, though...

I just saw this movie yesterday with my brother and I wasn't expecting alot from it at all. I ended up really getting a kick out of it.

Sure you can tell that it's sort of alot of american films in a blender but I think they made a pretty enjoyable concoction that is a blast as its own thing. It had alot more heart than what I was expecting as well.

The filmed used it's time travel stuff very carefully which I liked.

I really liked the interaction between Milly and Miyamoto, I took a shine to them right away. I couldn't help but think that this film must've had an influence on Kamen Rider as they reminded to some degree of Takumi and Mari. Hey and whatya know, Accel/Clock Up are in this to. It kinda made me think at some point maybe they wanted Faiz to be Returner ala Kamen Rider ..and it might have been better off if they had just ran with that. :P

Good action and effects. I would've liked a little more hand to hand stuff with Miyamoto but that didn't detract from anything while watching the movie.

Nice balance of drama and humor as well. I liked that Milly is cute and attractive but not in anykind of glamourus or idol way. She was very real to me. I'm not usually into the leather trenchcoat gunman type characters but of that breed, I'd have to pick Miyamoto as a favorite.

Overall, I'd say it's a good movie if you're just in the mood for something that's straight up action but at the same time, want something with a little heart in it as well.

I saw this at DragonCon 2004 in the Con Suite. This high-tech tokusatsu flick was okay, the FX are quite nifty, though the story was rather weak. It's basically The Matrix meets Terminator and ET.

Speaking of The Matrix, I'm a bit surprised that nobody mentioned this among the things they borrowed from, as the Matrix-style FX are used so frequently that one is led to believe this to be a cynical ripoff (much like Equilibrium). Kind of like the many lame Terminator ripoffs Japan had in the early 90s to cash in on the Terminator 2: Judgement Day feeding frenzy. (To name just a few, Lady Battlecop, an episode of Exceedraft, and 1991's Godzilla Vs. King Ghidorah, which had a very embarrassing Terminator ripoff.)
