The General Godzilla Thread

So do we know if this Godzilla 2014 wil be CG or will it be a physical suit? If he's going to completly CG im praying they make him move and look just as cool as he does with a suit actor. Hopefully CG can capture the essence of Godzilla.

^ Unfortunately that is the case. Legendary Picture and WB would have never agreed to make the film if Toho would have somehow insisted they stick with suitimation. Thomas Tull, head of LP, stated pretty early on that Godzilla would be 100% CGI.

Frankly as a life long Godzilla fan I'm really kind of upset about this. To me saying you're making a Godzilla movie without a man in a suit in like saying you're going to make a Muppet movie without puppets. It's just a total non sequitur.

But what are you going to do? Hollywood is Hollywood and they like their photo realistic CGI.

I actually don't mind Godzilla being 100% CG, I mean yeah I would prefer suit actors and stuff but most Americans see Godzilla as a cheesy and campy "guy in a costume".

The actors and all those involved said that "they are taking Godzilla back to his dark and serious roots".

I don't want to start a debate about this, but honestly if "most Americans" think that a Godzilla portrayed via suitimation is "cheesy and campy" then they can go die in a fire (to quote Nobuo Akagi).

Again I would say the same thing to someone who said they should update Kermit the Frog and start using CG instead of felt.

Being a man in a suit is, for me anyway, an essential aspect of what or who Godzilla is and why I love those movies. Obviously Legendary Picture, and more importantly Toho, don't agree and I suppose when I finally see a trailer for Godzilla (hopefully on the front of Pacific Rim *fingers crossed*) I might change my mind. But right now that is still a major hangup for me among other things.

While I agree, you can't really blame them, I'm sure most of them grew up on the '70s flicks.

but I have hope for this movie though, they brought up the news of the reboot on a podcast I listen to, they do the podcast live in front of an audience, and it was met with applause.

honestly though, Godzilla could be 100% CGI or suit or half and half, I don't care. I just need me some Godzilla. NAOW:buttrock:

btw, has anyone read the new comics from IDW? I assume they are doing well since all the comic shops I visit seem to be sold out.

Off the top of my head, I’ve only seen the original film, Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster, and a truly awful dubbed version of Space Godzilla. The Space Godzilla thing was my own fault as I over excitedly ordered a double feature DVD with that film and another one from the series from a similar period in time, without checking if the films had subs. Dubbing just kills movies (aside from cheesy kung-fu films, in which instances the dubbing makes the movies). So I didn’t even bother with the other one in that set. I also bought The Terror of Mechagodzilla, but after realising that I should have watched vs Mechagodzilla first, that one went on the shelf and hasn’t been played since.

The original is obviously a true classic, though I also have a lot of love for the original Gamera film too.

I totally agree with you. But as a Godzilla fan since I was like 5 years old I will hold my judgement until I see a trailer. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed as well.
