Can some one explain to me why people like FFXIII?

I was under the impression that the general consensus was that the game sucked.

Not so much that the game suck, but that it was thorough disappointment.

Oh, personally, i thought it sucked, it was too slow to start, and the story wasn't that interesting, but hot damn, those cutscenes were gorgeous.

Agreed. Yet God of War 3 still won "Best Graphics", then again it was the VGA so it's not like they matter.
The saddest part for me about FF13 was that it had potential to be a great game. But then the story convoluted and kind of stupid, the characters became tiresome and annoying (Sazh was the only one I did not want to hit with a shovel by the end), and the gameplay became extremely repetitive.

I'd like to play FF13 myself so I can see if a lot of the hatred for it is overblown.

It's a mix-bag of a game. There are people who actually love it and even those who hate it can admit that that it has some good qualities. It's not, by far, the worst RPG ever. So you should really at least give it a try.

FF10 is more open and less linear than FFXIII. That is a bad thing IMO.
