The Customer is Not Always Right

As a follow-up to my last post I would want to emphasize that "two-part" equation and obviously the other half of that falls onto people like me who work in the stores. Even if we're having a bad day we can't let that effect how we do our jobs even when a customer is being unreasonable or rude. That's just part of the gig.

I've seen the difference between good customer service and bad. I'm more than aware of even times when I could have done better.

I just think it's important for customers to remember that these are people. Actual human beings. Not some sort of lower-class of lifeform with name-tags that are beholden to your every whim or conspiring to ruin your day. For those of us doing customer service, we should remember that we're there to do a job and the very nature of that job is dealing with various kinds of people.

Doesn't make it easier to do, especially when they stink. That's a think in the library, we are free, so anyone can use it and we're behooved from saying anything. All those lovely things we see in notalwaysright.com... I can't say them

Well that's the last time I tried to ask for a refund for the wrong reasons.....If I really don't like something that I bought, try using for more than a day or two, and if doesn't workout, then exchange the item for something else.

It doesn't make it easier no. I know that all too well.

In the end the problem really is that 'sense of entitlement'.

For exemple people think that because we're a convinience store we're OBLIGED to break their 20s into 5s and 10s. We're not. We need those 5s and 10s to give back to paying customers and 5s and 10s don't grow on tree. Especially during the weekend when banks are closed and everybody only has 20s on them even when they buy for less than 5$!

I also agree we can't let our emotions make us act like a-holes with customers. I NEVER transfer my frustration from one customer to the next. I just talk about it with my coworkers.

In the end it comes down to this. That's why that site exists: to vent our frustration. Frankly no one who never worked in retail understands our complains so we gotta share with people with the same experience than us. Its either that or always be pissed off at customers and grow angrier and angrier and suckier at our jobs.

As for me being a customer? I always treat retail personel the way I would like to be treated. Its common curtesy. Plus when I realize I ask a stupid question I don't get pissy because someone pointed it out... and I READ THE FUCKIN' SIGNS! Seriously I read stuff automatically even if I have no inquiry or it doesn't concern me. People just don't bother to read or can't seem to bother to take to memory how the produce the use look like or what they're called. You'd be surprised at the number of people who buy lotto tickets, repeatedly, without knowing what they're called!

My biggest pet peeve ever:

I believe in being personable and a part of the community. I think that being a library means that you address your customer (well, I did). However, people don't want to interact. They will note my open hand and slap their books down right next to it, rudely. If i hold out my hand for the card, they will snap it down on the counter like a playing card, and if i ask for it, they slide it forward and inch and say "there it is" like i'm a shithead. I finally started throwing it back at them. One strategy is to say "yes it is" and keep holding out my hand. The other is to take it, finish and then put it down right in front of me. When they ask for their card back, i do it right back at them. they get PISSED and it's totally worth it. I'm probably a bastard, but I will make someone more considerate of the worker, so help me god
