Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning

Just got back from this flick. Holy ****. MAJOR step in the right direction for the franchise. If this movie had come out in 2003 instead of the remake, most fans would not have complained. Pretty much every gripe I had with the remake is fixed in this one. That's not to say that this is a perfect movie by any means, but still pretty damn good.

The Good: Most of the back story with the family works. The explanation of how Ermey becomes sheriff is also pretty fucking cool. The gore is stepped up in this one, giving us a hell of a lot of nasty kills in the meager
84-minute running time. This film is VERY mean-spirited, as none of the characters who get killed have a easy death. We get meat hooks, butcher knives, sledgehammers to the head, and a string of chainsaw impalements at the end that had me cheering. Not to mention the bullet wounds. Nice.

The Bad: I had a couple complaints about this flick too. While the back story that is explained works, I would have preferred more of it. What was there seemed like it was thrown in simply to say they had it in there, and they were rushing through it just to get to the stalking/killing scenes. I'm sure however that with all the footage that was cut out, the film will flow alot better once the Unrated DVD comes out. Looking forward to it. Another element that left me cold was the story structure. After the first 20 minutes, this film seemed like a remake of the remake, with Jordana Brewster playing the Jessica Biel character. THIS time, however, they had a much more satisfying ending.

So, overall, I give this one a solid 4 out of 5. If only the 2003 movie had the major balls that this one does, Thomas Hewitt would be solidly on top of the slasher pile. As it is, this one went a long way to me accepting the 'new' TCMs. And that's saying something.

Go see this flick guys. It is NASTY in the best possible way.

Saw it too. Lot's of blood and guts. If that's your thing then you won't be disappointed!
