Kiva's were not great, yeah. Here's the chart for people interested in comparing KR toy sales up through Kiva.

(Keep in mind that the toy sales are charted for the whole franchise by year, not per show. So what's labeled as "Kiva" sales there actually represents all Kamen Rider merch sales for the year 2008, which just happens to be the year Kiva was running. I suspect this is gonna make comparing toy sales per year in the September-starting post-Decade shows a real pain. )

Especially since Double's year seems to have the highest sales.

(And I always find it amusing the drop from Blade to Hibki wasn't that huge)

Plus the fact that they seem to be more aggressively continuing to market previous year's shows during a given show's year. Presumably 2010's merch sales will be influenced a lot by the shot of Den-O movies that came through that year, 2011's are probably going to be affected by the W V-Cinema stuff and the 40th anniversary movie, etc...

Also hurting the ratings = toy sales thesis... uh... apparently Go-Onger had ridiculously high toy sales? (I don't have a citation for it, but Shinkenger's J-wiki page says it had lower toy sales than Go-Onger -- at 10.5 billion vs. 12 billion -- despite doing much better in the ratings.) According to that chart it looks like Magiranger's toy sales weren't particularly affected by the ratings boost it got, either.

OK, I stand corrected, high ratings =/= high toy sales etc.

I mentioned in another thread, but Ohranger's toy sales actually went up (it became the highest-selling sentai of the period) even as its ratings went down following the sarin gas attack tone shift.

What's that about? I've only seen maybe three episodes of Ohranger, so I'm guessing that after the sarin attack they started toning down the action to avoid any "too soon" moments?

- Nice CG with the space scenes;

- Love the appearence of the credits;

- And things begins making it clear it's a movie opening: Alata on the top of a building;

- Alata has fallen in love;

- And the other Goseiger finally appear;

- WarStar is back!;

- Nice shot with the chupacabra form of Braj.. i mean Bladerun;

- Morphing just to be beaten?;

- Rashiru won't go out with you Alata! Deal with it!;

- So, Goseiger can find about alien in books. How funny you are trying to promote reading, Toei!;

- It seems the movie hinted Bladerun's true form of Brajira by showing him doing the "CamouMirage" to become Comet again. Interesting;

- Even with the world starting to suffer with ragnarok, Alata still finds time for heroic speech;

- Alata smiles as his mission to make Rashiru falls for him has been acomplished with sucess XD;

- The former monsters of WarStar are back;

- Agri and Eri in a restaurant full of crazy people. Does WarStar have humor sense?;

- Agri decided Alata shouldn't be the only one who gets a flirt in the movie. However, Eri is there to prevent this with the old techniques of Master Croagnuk lol;

- Eri's poison jab!;

- I got the feeling that Toei cut some scenes from the movie, because Hyde and Moune just appeared having trouble with WarStar;

- Monsters on bicycles battling with angels who plays card games! Try to overcome that, Yu-Gi-Oh franchise;

- Card games on bicycles vs Narutaki cosplay. This time it isn't Decade's fault;

- Finally! Gosei Knight;

- So, Knight took down enemies that the Goseiger have spent 16 episodes to defeat. Danm it, Toei. It's Goseiger's movie;

- It's EPIC morphin time!;

- Love the roll call. But they swapped Moune's and Hyde's position. Moune should have went first;

- No explosions? That's surprising, Toei;

- Seems like Drake is not the only one who likes to eat weird stuff;

- Finally, theme song playing!;

- Gosei Hurricane? What a... strange kind of attack;

- I'm surprised Toei gave the new bad guy for the Gosei Girls. Seems things are finally changing;

- Moune is awesome;

- Gosei Shining? Homage to PreCure's Shining Fortissimo?;

- Alata didn't get new attack, but new Red Break is very impressive;

- Gee, that city looks like it was made with...toys lol;

- Rashiru is back. But i can't see Knight. Poor guy, she should have annoyed him a lot talking about her feelings towards Alata.

- Goseiger need Wonder Power, now!;

- Is it me or does the cockpit looks different? Anyway, i like it;

- So, Rashiru, only NOW you decided to care about the other four Goseiger? News, darling, they no longer need your cheering! ;

- I have to say that Wonder Gosei Great has dissapointed me. The use of Wonder Charge looked better when it was used in the series. In the movie looked so.... simple. I was waiting more sparkles, more intensity....;

- Things solved and Rashiru revealed she is married already. Poor Alata.XD;

- By the way: Where did you find that book, Hyde?;

- Moune, Hyde took out the book from nowhere in order for Alata read, not you!;

- Excellent ending scene! I also like the credits. Although the Goseiger copied the Rescue Fire with that whole pose on the top of a building;

- But why the Goseiger was running for a random chair in the street? And, by the way, whatever happened with Knight?


Overall, nice movie. But, as much as i like Goseiger (and i do. It's my favorite series), it still didn't beat Dekaranger Full Blast Action and Gekiranger Hong Kong Great Confrontation as my favorite movie. Anyway, it had some nice things. The best of it was the pace, that was very well conducted.

Kiva is 85 right? Isnt that higher than a few of the other ones then?

I haven't watched the show so I can't describe it in detail; someone else will no doubt be able to fill you in better as to the nature of the tone change within the series itself.

What I have read from Japanese sources is that the show was set up to be a HUGE deal based on it being the 20th anniversary show; this was when Sentai still aired on evening TV and was meant for family viewing, so it decided to aim for a very dark and serious tone.

Unfortunately, a string of disasters around the beginning of the show (the Kobe Earthquake in January, the Sarin Gas attacks two weeks after it began airing) sent a panic through the company. They were pressured to put less emphasis on some of the show's established core themes.

The writers understandably struggled with this. The complaints I've read are the sort of thing you'd expect to come from such a situation: episodes start becoming obvious stock plot rehashes, toys get crammed in without rhyme or reason, etc; in general, the show loses the clear aim it had at the beginning and the merchandising doesn't gel with the story.

On the other hand, the show also included the greatest number of robots for any Sentai series to date, and despite complaints about them not meshing with the story, the show netted Toei their highest Sentai toy sales to date (possibly in history) at 15.5 billion yen.

It's believed that this is the reason why future shows began being tailored more and more towards the 3-6 year old crowd, since Toei realized that they could get better toy sales by making simpler stories that children could understand. Note that by Megaranger, the franchise has even been moved to an early-morning timeslot.

ETA: Oh Aoi, that's awesome! It looks like Ohranger's toy sales indeed do hold the record for highest ever, then.

It does kind of look like there is some general correlation between trends in ratings and toy sales when neither are exceptional. But at the same time, there's a lot of room for SERIOUSLY CRAZY outliers, like Timeranger, Dairanger, Ohranger, or Go-Onger.
