Of course mecha and mecha fights are important. Without 'em Sentai wouldn't be Sentai. Without them the fight ends with normal sized heroes and villians which is what Kamen Rider is for. For Sentai, big robots are a must.... That's the beauty of Sentai.l.

Goranger and JAKQ would like a word with you.

Exacaly why I am comfortable with the statement I made.

Yeah kinda figures you only care about sentai if mecha is the driving force. I mean why bother having a sentai team at all. Just have some some plot device that has giant mecha fight each ep. There is no need for the sentai team right?

I never said anything like that at all.... :sly:

You should know by now that the mecha are tradition and very much a part of the image of Sentai as the spandex is.

Again, go back to my original statement. READ slowly this time.

KingRanger beat me to it. To be fair to Forever Knight, it was only two Sentais compared to the 33 that do (or will, in the un-premeired Gokaiger's case). Big robots are cool and it would be weird now if they did a Sentai without mechas.

Goranger's mecha may not have become a humanoid robot, but they were still mecha. The show still had mecha sequences.

(I can't really remember what JAKQ did, though...)

Goranger had the helicopter mecha. Well, a vehicle but it was over-sized so I guess one could call it a mecha?. What do you guys think?.

The weird thing is if you go back and watch Goranger & JAKQ that they still seem "off" from Sentai even being the originals, for me anyway. Like I said Mecha are a must.

On the other hand, if you start classifying vehicles and carriers as "defining" Sentai mecha, I think it starts to lose its meaning. You'll be blending it with Metal Hero and Tomica Hero and any other show with teams and vehicles.

The formula for Sentai is color coded fighting team + giant robot. Not mecha. Goranger and JAKQ don't fit the bill there, but they don't have to. No genre springs into being fully formed. It refines itself and picks up traditions over time, and with time those traditions become an indispensable part of the genre's identity.

Whether or not they were there from day one (and you could even argue that they were, since Battle Fever J was the first series actually called by the title of Super Sentai), it's undeniable that the giant robot has become a longstanding Sentai tradition, and it would be unthinkable to do a modern Sentai without one.
