Never seen the show (though I think it would be fun to watch in a "oh my god that guy is so over-the-top it's painful" type of way.
I will say that the type of anime/manga fans who wore everything on their sleeve and were overbearing about their hobby and generally were gross, weird, obnoxious people... well, those were the types of people that temporarily turned me away from anime so long ago.
