Superman Returns 2 is still alive!

Well. Well. Superman: Man of Steel is moving forward! :buttrock:

Update on the status of the Superman sequel Man of Steel!

I had a major case the "coincidencies" (yes I just made that up) today! Literally maybe 15 minutes after receiving an email from IESB's Robert Sanchez with details of a story to post from ShoWest, I checked email and received a question from a reader inquiring about the project I was instructed to write about…like I said "coincidencies!"

Ok, here's the big news, Robert has informed me that he has confirmed that yes, Bryan Singer is 100% on the sequel to his 2004 revamp Superman Returns. He has since confirmed this with studio sources so take this one to the bank.

But, with Superman Returns writers Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris out, who will be penning the film?

Word is Transformers/Star Trek scribes Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are considering being behind the project. This gives Superman fans hope after Returns' mild disappointment amongst fan boys. The pair are apparently in talks and have had "several meetings" regarding the film. No need to worry about a lack of action from these two!

Stay tuned for more Superman updates from the IESB!

I heard about a possible Doomsday in the works!!!!! :buttrock:

^ No. Just no. I don't want Doomsday to be in the sequel. Not now.

Anywho, another news from Empireonline.com.

Earlier today, IESB reported that rumours were flying that Bryan Singer was working on a sequel to Superman Returns. Well, we've spoken to Singer and he's confirmed that work's under way on the film that some said would never happen because the first was perceived as a flop.

"That movie made $400 million!" Singer says incredulously. "I don’t know what constitutes under-performing these days...Look, I can understand, I suppose, what some people mean. Perhaps some people went in with the expectation of it being like an X-Men film, and Superman is a tougher character than that. Especially bringing him back. It really goes back to the fact that you can only please some of the people some of the time. But, yes, I’m just getting back with writers after the strike. We’re just in the development phase. I’m starting to develop a sequel...with the intention of directing it."

Singer knows that there was some negative reaction to the fact that the first film focused more on story at the expense of action and is looking to redress that next time.

“The first one was a romantic film and a nostalgic film,” he says. “I’ll be the first person to own up to that without making any apologies for it. I knew it was going to be that from the outset. And now that the characters are established, there’s really an opportunity to up the threat levels...Clearly there’ll be a body count [laughs]. From frame one, it will be unrelenting terror! All those teenage girls who found the movie and mooned over James Marsden or Brandon? Well, I’m going to wake them up!” He may be joking about the unrelenting terror.

We have to say, we actually enjoyed a huge amount about Superman Returns. Brandon Routh made a terrific Superman and Clark Kent and Singer clearly cared about the characters. It was light on action, so it would be great to see a sequel in which we get to actually experience what Supes can really do.

What do you think? Do you want to see Superman return again?

Because Warner Brothers likes money and figures audiences might line up for another Superman movie if the character isn't reduced to an obsessed ex-boyfriend with a lifting fetish, there has been some forward movement on The Man of Steel. But any kind of forward movement would kinda require the writing of an actual script, right? And since the Superman Returns duo of Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris have moved on to other projects, that means the studio must've hired new writers to exorcise the creepy out of the titular character, correct?

Maybe they have, maybe they haven't. I just happen to know who isn't writing The Man of Steel. Here's a partial list:

Lorenzo Semple Jr.
Michael Chabon
Harold Pinter
Dog, The Bounty Hunter
Aristophanes
Joe Gillis
Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman

I don't have rock-solid information on the first six, but I do know (via a very well-placed source) that Orci and Kurtzman are very busy hammering out Transformers 2, and they'll evidently be handling on-set rewrite chores for Kommandant Michael Bay.

When there's real, no-bullshit news to report on who's truly writing The Man of Steel... we may not have it here first, but at least we'll have it second-hand from Variety! While you're waiting, head on over to Empire and read Bryan Singer's comments on what he'd like to do with the next film.

From all my friends, and others, it seems like the top three are......................

Darkseid, Doomsday, or Brainiac. Can't imagine how weird a Bizarro movie would be :sly:

Once again, I'm all for Doomsday! And I was thinking, what title would they have that's short enough, not Superman: Doomsday, but they should just do Doomsday. It would peak some interests for sure.

I think this is gonna end up happening. The pattern has already been in the titles, the titles have them doing something, if you know what I mean. Batman Begins, Superman Returns, you see the similarity? Now we have their titles; The Dark Knight, and with that the pattern dictates Superman's next film is gonna be The Man of Steel.

After that, we'll hopefully get the big one! I still have hope for you know what.........

Update!

Brandon Routh on the 'Man of Steel'

CS: You showed a real flair for comedy playing Clark Kent. Is that a love of yours, doing the funny stuff?
Routh:
It is. It's really my first love. The first theater that I ever did was playing a really silly character onstage and I'm a character a little bit in a leading man's body. So it's hard to get to those gigs because they don't think of me. I do my best to present myself as a leading man as well because I am both of those things. So it was great to be able to play Clark in "Superman Returns." I thought Clark was funny and that's why I loved playing him and I look forward to doing more of him when we do the sequel. I've already been pushing for more Clark and more funny.

CS: Do you have any expectation as to when you might go to work on "Man of Steel"?
Routh:
I expect that we'll be working early next year. I know that Bryan [Singer] has pretty much finished out "Valkyrie" and is back in the states and is zeroing in on the story that he wants to tell. Once that arrives it's going to move pretty quickly. I think that everybody is getting excited. It's been three years now, really. It's hard to believe that it's been long, but everyone is getting jazzed and ready to go again. I certainly am.

CS: What sides of Superman and Clark Kent are you excited about exploring in the sequel?
Routh:
Well, I think that something that audiences are looking for – and I certainly am, too – is for Superman to actually be able to lay a punch on someone or something. I was filming and I thought, "I haven't really hit anything. I feel like I'm going to need to let some of this anger out." So I'm happy that I think that's going to be a central part of the sequel, getting a good villain that we can actually have physical altercations with. Certainly also, I'd like more humor from Clark or just more of Clark and Jimmy. A little bit more of Lois and Clark, how we used to see them, a bit more of buddies. Perhaps things will be smoothed over with Superman and Lois and she can afford to be a little bit nicer to Clark. I think that's something that people want to see and those are some of the great moments from previous "Superman" films. Also, Superman and Lois getting together, that's always my end goal. I want that to happen. The romantic in me wants that to happen eventually whether they're finally together in this movie or in whatever future films there might be. I kind of want to see that happen.

CS: Poor James Marsden. He's getting used to losing the girl.
Routh:
I know, but he had some good films come out this year, and so James is doing all right.

CS: Has Bryan given you any voice in the plan, maybe asking you what you'd like to see or what you're looking forward to?
Routh:
Yeah, and well, even if he doesn't ask I tell him all the time. He's very receptive to my notes and my thoughts and so I just let him know. I keep telling him that thing about Lois and Superman getting together and I trust that if I keep repeating that he'll just think it's his own thought someday.

CS: Have you stayed in shape for the next time you have to put the suit on or is it going to be starting all over from scratch?
Routh:
I'm definitely not starting over from scratch. There was certainly some time where I was like, "Ugh. I can't take anymore of this working out. It's been my life for too long." So I shunned it for a little while, but I've gotten back into it and it makes me feel better to do it too so that it doesn't feel like so much of a hassle, something that has to be done. I actually will be in a very good place when we start again and will see if I can't make it a little more bigger and a little bit more impressive.

Justice League:

CS: There was a lot of talk about a "Justice League" film, but sounds like it's not going to happen now. Did they ever talk to you about appearing in that?
Routh:
They talked to me about it, yes, but I think someone else asked me if they ever offered me the role and they did not. I'm happy that we're talking about "Man of Steel" again and "Batman" looks great and is coming out and that looks great and I think it's time for those two characters, certainly, to flourish and some of the DC Comic Universe to strike out on their own first and strengthen each character individually and then to go at all of them together.

Batman vs Superman:

CS: Have you changed your stance on doing a movie together with Christian Bale playing Batman, just the two of you?
Routh:
I've been asked that question many times and at first, I think I've been quoted as saying that Superman and Batman should never fight each other which makes sense to me. They should be fighting together on the same team, but Christian is certainly a great actor and a very nice guy. I'm excited for the new "Batman." So I'll open up my view because I know that people want to see it and maybe there's a story that could be told that way that makes sense to me. So I won't put it out anymore. I won't say no anymore.
