STAR TREK - Talkback

Wrath of Kahn still the best, Undiscovered Country is a VERY close second, and this Star Trek here.... now comes in third.

I loved it... not a lot of real dramatic meat to it, but it was uplifting and smile inducing.

Since this IS the same timeline..... I wonder if they still should be keeping an eye out for when Vyger shows up... ;)

So?

Yes, both movies have the same writers, but consider this:

Star Trek will always get more respect than Transformers in the sci-fi world. Transformers is always considered to be some silly kid's toy/cartoon, which was based on a toy line from Japan. It wouldn't make a difference.

Remember, GINO was written by two Disney writers, and their Disney work is better than GINO. I thought JJ Abrams' Cloverfield was a better Godzilla movie than GINO!

Both have the same writers, but one is better than the other (and not just because Michael Hack Bay is not involved in one of them). That should tell you something.

So? So its okay to compare the two movies in terms of story telling.

That's very subjective what you're saying right there but the relevancy to whether it should allow Abrams Trek to be compared to Bayformers is minimal.

And GINO is? I'm not sure what you're trying to bring to the table by bringing that up. But if you did what I just think you did then you just agreed with my point. These two Disney writers wrote disney movies and some movie called Gino and you just compared the two by saying their Disney work is better than their Gino movie.

Yes you hate Michael Bay I get that, but because they have the same writers its very justifiable to compare these movies to each other in terms of story telling, dialogue, plot development, characterization and so on. Because the director is not the mastermind behind all this. According to your logic you'd think its crazy to compare Forrest Gump to Benjamin Button because they have the same writer (and if you said that in front of a few learned film individuals they'd call you the crazy one).

So in other words its not completely retarded to compare Abrams Trek to Bayformers, its retarded to think its retarded. And so on and so forth.

Well they said they are probably going to revisit some other stories from Trek lore for the sequel and put the whole alternate reality twist on them. I do see Khan happening in a future installment, personally I wouldn't mind seeing the Talosians either. As long as they stay far away from that awkward as hell series finale then I'd be fine with just about any notable TOS story.

I guess it depends... how soon after the crew graduated did they run in to Khan? That and how soon after they graduated did they come across any of the well known stories the Enterprise is famous for?

Well they first ran into Khan about three years after Kirk became Captain. Although Kirk became Captain a bit earlier than when he should have in the AU we have here. Since its an alternate reality its pretty much free reign for whatever story they wanna choose and alter it in anyway possible. I wouldn't be surprised if they do something from TNG even.

Kinda late seeing this, but oh well. I liked it pretty well.

Now I'm half tempted to check out the original series.

I have a theory. I think that Nero didn't just travel through time, but to an alternate universe that already existed. His meddling didn't 'create' this tangent universe, it was already there. Furthermore, I believe that even though we weren't aware of it, Enterprise, the last Trek TV show, took place in this same alternate reality. That's the only way IMO to explain how advanced the technology is in Enterprise and the new film. The USS Kelvin was far FAR beyond anything we saw in the original Trek. With the way they explained it in the film, it seems like they are saying everything was exactly the same until Nero attacked the Kelvin, changing history and creating an alternate reality.

That's a pretty good theory, it would also explain why Pike is much older than Kirk in this reality. I'm guessing there's an alternate version of the Enterprise series in the mainstream tangent because of its last episode that crossed over with TNG.
