Smallville - Final Season 10

Was it a naff finale for a 10 year old show? Yes.
Was it a naff finale for Smallville standards..? Not really. Think back to some of the other seasons finales and generally just awful television that was Smallville.

Im sorry, but why have a 2 hr finale when you don't have two hrs of footage. Half the time it was nothing but flashbacks of the entire series. Why do that?

I realized one thing though about why Tom Welings didn't dawn the Superman costume. IMO I think he was really afraid of the Superman Curse.

I'm going with RF's comment. This show is about Clark Kent, and the journey to becoming Superman. Sure, there's stuff to be desired, but all in all, it served its purpose.

The io9 article about the finale was quite correct and just funny:

Several months ago, I was talking with io9 reporter Alasdair Wilkins about how the hell this perennially unhip, unheralded, and mostly forgotten show stayed on the air for ten years (this is a mystery that's intrigued me for a while).

Alasdair had a terrifically plausible theory. In real life, Tom Welling really is Superman, but instead of fighting for justice, he coerces Smallville's cast and crew to make the show under the threat of death, sort of like Superboy-Prime mixed with that psychic kid from The Twilight Zone who exiled his enemies to the cornfield.

Alasdair and I never figured out why Smallville would be cancelled if Superman was holding the staff hostage, but after watching "Finale," I think I understand. Smallville was no simple TV show. It was a decade-long case study in delayed gratification, a tenth-of-a-century long con.

Uhmmm... Because it's the final episode and they wanted to add nostalgia by doing flashbacks?

I smirked when Luthorcorp sign broke and it spelt out Lexcorp.

I didn't even notice that...

I think it's a nice reminder that Superman was very public with his origins in the Donner movies, and probably would have told everything to Lois in this series as he did in the movies...just omitting his true identity and other small details.

No he wasn't... I'll admit it's been a while since I last watched the original Donner movie, but there was a time I could recite it. Superman is very cagey about his origins, only saying the name of the planet he's from. He won't even say his age. The most we get is his weight, in the first movie. If that's what you mean by "very public," then I suppose we agree. But the comic book Chloe was reading talked about a boy who lived in Smallville (not some random Midwestern town, Smallville.) who grew up to be Superman.

Obviously, since Lois finds out who he is in the second movie he's more open about it, but none of that ever gets published anywhere. And Donner only made the one movie. He shot a lot of footage for the second one, but was replaced before it could be finished, so Richard Lester re-shot a whole bunch of stuff so he could sort of say he directed the thing. The other two movies (which I prefer to pretend don't exist) had nothing to do with Donner.
