Shinkenger #1 With Female Otaku

Recently the winners of the "Japan Otaku Awards 2009 Girl's Side" were announced.

Conceived as the female equivalent of the Otaku Awards, it is a list of awards given out in recognition to TV shows, movies and manga that leave a lasting impression on the Otaku world for the year.

What may be surprising to some is this years Grand Prix winner. Taken from the normally more "boyetic" world of Tokusatsu, female fans have decided that Samurai Sentai Shinkenger is deserving of the top prize.

Was it because of Kaoru? Was it because of how the female team-members were never downplayed in battle? Or did they just find Takeru too hot?

We may never know, but this is an interesting development and it will be interesting to see if it effects Toku trends in the future.

Its because the boys were hot.

These were voted on before Kaoru was even a rumor.

I agree that Aiba's popularity helped this along, I'll never get though. Aside from dancing, the guy doesn't have much else going for him. IMO

You can also say that TeniMyu is bringing a lot of female attention to Sentai/Kamen Rider respectively, since Toei has pretty much been cherry picking actors from that for the last 5 seasons. Go-Onger is the only series that didn't have someone from TeniMyu in it.

hmm, Shinkenger is getting great recognition for things left and right.

once again I gotta say I'm proud of them. To be talked about with adult tv shows, dramas, and movies must be a great honor.

If they're awarding Shinkenger simply because of a female Red or the physical qualities of male stick figures, then that should tell you something about this award itself.

Shinkenger should win for "Best Show about Pretend Samurais". :P

Yeah! There's nothing noteworthy about a show making history by subverting an ubiquitous aspect of its decades old franchise! Come on now.

I know nothing about this award, not being into anime, so I couldn't say whether it's a widely known or respected one but still, this is a pretty interesting turn of events.

I'm not surprised though.............considering Shinkenger was given the opportunity to make a epilogue V-Cinema OVA due to its surprise popularity amongst the Japanese fanbase. Considering how Den-O's popularity is due to females falling in love with Takeru Sato and the Imagins, I'm not surprised that Shinkenger's popularity is due to having a large standing with female fans.

In other words, my theory is "Make Females happy = Popular Series"

Coincidence, isn't it
