Sherlock Holmes First Poster

Just incase if anyone didn't know, it's actually based on a comic book that hasn't been published yet. So I'm absurdly assuming it has the same aspects like this film has. So it's not suppose to be based on the historical version of him.

I haven't read anything that mentions a comic. But some official press quote for the film says:

In a dynamic new portrayal of Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famous characters, Sherlock Holmes sends Holmes and his stalwart partner Watson on their latest challenge. Revealing fighting skills as lethal as his legendary intellect, Holmes will battle as never before to bring down a new nemesis and unravel a deadly plot that could destroy the country.

That whole "edgy, hip" Sherlock Holmes angle sounds really juvenile to me. Not only does it entirely miss the point of what Sherlock Holmes and his stories were about, but it just fits in with an annoying epidemic of similar origin stories. I'll probably end up seeing it, but I doubt I'll be able to enjoy it as a Sherlock Holmes story, which is disappointing. Honestly I expected more out of Guy Ritchie...

... what? Since when is Holmes a dirty, oafish, kung-fu-using action hero? I thought the idea for a movie sounded cool at first but this looks totally commercially skewed and just highly inappropriate.

Dirty? Well he is a bohemian and an addict, oafish well I think that has to do more with RDJ's portrayal but it is pretty un-Holmes-ish (weird since there are a lot of things in this movie that are close to the novels). Kung Fu action hero? Well not so much Kung fu but he was one that could hold his own in a fist fight in the novels. I don't think they'll play up fist fighting all that much, its just there to make a cool trailer.

Aside from that I'm pleased that we finally have an accurate portrayal of Watson now instead of the typical blundering tubby thats just there so Holmes can flock his everlasting knowledge that many renditions use.

Well, I will say this: aside from some of the (in my opinion) unnecessary comedic injections, they look like they finally did Holmes and Watson some justice physically and pugilistically. While Holmes has always been the thinking-man's detective, he could definitely hold his own and even dominate a fight, armed or unarmed. Man, Bartitsu is awesome. I've always wanted to see it used in a good movie fight scene. For some reason my excitement level for this movie has inexplicably risen in the past few days.
