Rewatching KUUGA just killed everything

I love how kuuga has many forms and but he still looks good in every form... he doesnt have a suit full of stuff and big stupid toy-like weapons like most of the new kamen riders.

Yeah! In any of his forms he still looks like Kuuga and his forms are all extremely functional and not just there to fill a Bandai quota.

Epic win statement! I also like how he actually has a motorcycle, and it actually shows how he got it

That was a great part of the story and a perfect way to puncuate Ichijo accepting that Godai not only as a partner but as the only one with the power to fight the Gurongi on equal terms. You also notice a parallel because the episodes that lead to the rest of the police force accepting Godai/Kuuga as one of their own involve a bike riding Gurongi and the introduction of the Beatchaser.

It is after all called Kamen *Rider*. There should be some emphasis on having the bike. Something else I enjoyed with Kuuga when the stunt-work on the bike is just as much a part of the action as any of the hand to hand combat. Kamen Rider needs more bike-fu. :buttrock:

All his weapons were big and toy-like.

To some extent all toku hero weapons tend to be "toy like". No one is attempting to deny that toys are part of the equation.

BUT there is a fine line that is often crossed. I think Kuuga's weapons better achieve something that works very well as a cool looking weapon in the show that also makes a cool looking toy vs. the weapon or power item that is laughably blatant as a gaudy (sometimes even nonsensical) Bandai gimmick.

No, but it seems like people are trying to make it seem like his weapons looked like less of a toy than others.

Kuuga worked fine in that aspect, but I didn't like the designs and personally, I thought the DenGasher was probably the pinnacle of weapon designs. It didn't look so blatant in the show and I loved the idea of being able to break the thing apart and form different weapons. I also like those monster stands from Kiva, but those are hardly even used and seemed just as toyish as Kuuga's weapons, but I just prefer the look of Kiva's weapons in that case. Well, just the monster stands, the Tatsulot thing is an amusing character, but sucky weapon, same with that upcoming Zanbat sword.

Dengasher was only good in theory. I liked how it was an intricate component of the "3-part system" (belt, pass and weapon). But the modes themselves were ugly and toyish, probably even more toyish than the Kuuga weapons. The Kuuga arsenal actually looks genuine.

Dengasher would have certainly benefited from a Kuuga-style system of each mode turning into the possessing Imajins' respective weapons.

It finally makes sense to me what's going on with tokusatsu these days. Nowadays we have people being "forced" to do auditions by their managers or agencies. Back in the day, according to a japanese magazine I own Kamen Rider Black's audition was open for general public. So anyone could apply for the audition! So maybe back in the day actors actually wanted to be there in the first place. Hmmm.

This is not random bashing of newer tokusatsu. We simply don't see people like Hiroshi Watari or Kenji Ooba anymore. Awesome actors and stuntmen that really did some impressive job in these shows. I miss tokusatsu's golden age!
