I'm gonna see the film this Wednesday since I've heard from my parents that it was great.

I'll probably enjoy it to bits since I love Zoids and G Gundam as well as war anime with giant robots.

@ SamuraiEchidna, though Zoids the second anime was a tournament which aired first in the States it happened way after Chaotic Century the actual first anime in the chronology. Actually the whole concept of the series and story for the toyline and comics was based around a war . G Gundam's universe happened after wars decimated the Earth which led to colonies in outer space where the fights made the Earth into a virtual battleground. Here, I can understand what you mean but it does not apply to these anime series.

I have to tip my hat at the fact that they found a great compromise for the ending. The underdog emerging champion is a bit far-fetched and the "losing but going the distance" is really cliche, what they decided on "losing due to a technicality, but wining in everyone's eyes" was great.
