Rate this season: Kamen Rider

BTW, would anyone hang me if I said I liked Ichimonji more then Hongo?

Nah, I actually slightly prefer him myself, as a character, and Sasaki rules. Hongo just manages to keep up simply because Fujioka's so damn good.

This really is my favorite Tokusatsu series by a wide margin. If there were an option to vote 11, I'd have picked that. It's not perfect, but nothing is and given the length I think Kamen Rider does an incredible job at keeping up the pace. There are shorter, non-Rider series which I find agonizingly dull and make a mess of themselves. But this one? Rocks from start to finish in my book.

7. :D

It was really great at times, but it also dragged on way too long and I thought it lost steam after a while.

That's pretty much what I was going to write. Except I had "I'd have voted an 8, but a point gets knocked off for the series running on too long."

I don't know, maybe I'm just remembering wrong, but I remember a point during the last 20 or so episodes where each episode ended with Hongo faking his death. Tachibana and the rest fell for it every time. I think that's when you know your show should have ended a good 20 episodes back.

When I had only seen the first 20 or so episodes, I really didn't care for Ichimonji, to be honest. I thought Fujioka was awesome, I really loved those first several episodes, and...who was this baby-faced guy replacing Fujioka? But, when I finally saw the entire series (98 freaking episodes), I started to really appreciate Ichimonji and what Takeshi Sasaki did with the role. And when you see the finale, and realize that Hongo would have been a dead Ridersicle if not for Ichimonji, you have no choice but to rank him higher than Hongo.

I can think of 3 times, and it's only once where it's obviously an "Oh no he isn't!" (#95, because I'm just that sad.) The other two I can basically forgive because one of 'em thematically fits (the rise of Gelshocker coinciding with the death of Kamen Rider, plus the episode title references James Bond!) And the other is necessary to set up the Shocker Riders, which then leads to one of the best Kamen Rider moments ever when Ichimonji shows up.

Then again, the "faking my death" thing has been done so much in Rider series period that it almost doesn't stick out to me, so I'm probably overlooking a few more.
