Question: Does Marvel still hold any copyright on Super Sentai?

IIRC when Gokaiger was airing somebody who could read Japanese said that Marvel were mentioned in the copyright info, in the same way that Ishimori Pro was mentioned due to Goranger and JAKQ being co-productions with them. I would really doubt that Marvel/Disney have any continuing interest in those three shows though.

Marvel's not credited a single time for anything in Gokaiger. (Though people wondered if Marvelous was named as a tribute to them.) If you check the credits, Marvel's not even credited for Battle Fever, Denjiman or Sunvulcan. I never really understood the full details on Marvel's involvement, but I don't think they had as firm a grasp on their Sentai shows as they obviously did Spiderman, since the Sentais were more just INSPIRED by Marvel, rather than flat out using their characters. I know Spiderman takes a heck of a lot of liberties and doesn't reflect the comics, but...he's still Spiderman. I've often read their three Sentai shows being more of a contractual obligation than anything and they were barely involved in them, so...despite Stan Lee professing his love for the overrated Sunvulcan, I'm not sure Marvel's all that torn up about not really being a big part of those shows nowadays.

From what I remember reading, some of the MMPR knock-offs that were springing up around the time of that show's popularity led to Saban purchasing rights to EVERY Sentai title from Toei to forbid any company from using Sentai source material. (Tattooed Teenage Alien Fighters From Beverly Hills was named directly in the article I read; that show had wanted to use Sentai footage, but Saban put a stop to that.) So I think Saban and PR is why Marvel's pretty much out of the picture as far as their Sentai shows go.

The Power Rangers wikia reckons that Queen Hedrian (from Denjiman and Sun Vulcan) is based on the Thor villainess Hela, but that seems to me more like someone spotting vague similarities and calling them links rather than anything concrete.

That's something that came from the Japanese Wikipedia; they cite a book from 2003 called the Toei Super Sentai Chronicle: The World of Battle Fever J, Denjiman and Sunvulcan that claims not only is Hedorian inspired by Hela (in design), but that Toei had originally considered for characters based off of Hulk and Silver Surfer to be on the Denjiman team...

This article seems to imply that Marvel had some involvement with Denjiman and SunVulcan too.

Of course, currently, they don't seem to have any relation to them, and we've seen them appeared without Marvel being credited (while every Goranger and JAKQ appearance needs to credit Ishinomori).

Fair enough then. In case it wasn't apparent from the way I phrased it, I don't speak Japanese so I was just repeating what I'd been told by other people. Will put this one in the "busted" catagory

Continuing with rumours currently circulating online (so certainly take this with a pinch of salt) there's been some suggestion that "Spider-Verse", the upcoming Spiderman comic event that will apparently feature every incarnation of Spiderman, will feature a Japanese Spiderman. Whether that's the Toei version, the version from a short-lived manga made 10 years ago, or both, remains to be seen.

Well considering Marvel is promoting Toei Spider-Man again, it wouldn't be surprised if he is showing up in Spider-Verse.

Also to be honest I doubt Marvel knows what they own at this point. I remember right after Civil War they wanted to come out with a new Champions series, but had to rename it the Order since they let the trademark lapse. I know after Disney bought Marvel they tried to figure out everything they owned, but there are probably still a lot of questions. That's not even counting all the "work for hire" issues from the 60's.

Is it a rumor if it comes directly from the writer's mouth?
