Power Rangers Samurai - Episode 4/6 'Sticks & Stones'

You know what's more annoying than the people you're ranting about? Excuses like these.

Its not an excuse, it's the hard truth. I'm aware that kids shows can do a lot more than what some networks WANT them to do. But lets face it, MMPR was just as silly and ridiculous as Samurai is today. The only reason In Space pushed the envelope, and why RPM could do it years later, is because they thought it would be the last show. But hey, you have to think like a studio or a network here. Are they going to make a completely kid friendly show that all parents will like? Or are they going to add a bit more drama or violence (while still being kid friendly), and potentially piss off a bunch of parents and lose sales over it. Sometimes it's hard to ignore that vocal minority that will start crap over something that they didn't pay attention to. This is why Mature rated video games are being blasted, because some dumb parent bought it for their 7 year old. And working retail, I had to remind parents that Black Ops was not appropriate for a kid. Multiple times.

So if you market something as a kids show, you had better be watching your ass on what you put in it, or else there will be some crazy person that's going to flip out, no matter how safe it is for kids. It's not like those games where you can say "You should have paid more attention to the rating, stupid." This one IS being marketed towards kids. That, and remember that America has different beliefs on what kids should see than Japan, and as stupid as it might be, studios and networks have to be wary of that. Adapting a Japanese show, like an anime or in this case a Sentai, makes things much more difficult than just making a new show. I remember the MMPR days, back when parents were pissed because people were fighting on TV on a kids show. I remember when people were mad with the Tommy saga, and while it turned out OK, it still caused a big fuss.

That being said, should parents show their kid The Lion King? Or Aladdin? Cause those movies were pretty damn violent. So, I know why people don't like it when Power Rangers or similar shows get bashed more than violent Disney movies, but looking from a studio's perspective is what makes me say "It's a kids show" over and over and over.

I blame bad parents who complain rather than teaching their kids stuff like, "guns are bad", "people could die", "there are other cultures out there", or "sometimes guys like guys. nothing wrong with it."

Remember Batman Beyond, Justice league, PR Time Force? The good stuff. It seems "kids shows" these days are watered down. This is why I started watching sentai.

Of course everything comes down to money, so I understand, but I say dub Sentai and slap it with a PG rating.

The concept Samurai is too Japanese to be Americanized anyways. I just hate how they play on the assumed ignorance of the viewers and say stuff like folding zord and treating kanji as if they're magic symbols as opposed to using their mojikara through the actual characters of kanji.

This!

I have nothing to say, but agree with you!

I thought the episode was actually well-detailed. Of course, it gave bit of a different turn on how Emily was to be who she is now. But, I can see that she's much more secure about herself compare to her counterpart, Kotoha-chan.

Eh, I will go with you on the Kanji = Magic Symbols thing, but not so much the Folded Zord, and here's why: The literal translation of Origami, in the context of Shinkenger(折神), is "Folded God." I know that a bunch of people in America would throw a fit if anything had "God" in it that wasn't based in Christianity. We already have a name for the mecha, Zords, so I don't see any problem with calling it a Folded Zord. It's a decision in translation, and it works. Plus, they've made reference to using the power of ancient symbols (the kanji), which literally is what Mojikara is. When it comes down to it, Samurai is hard to adapt, yes, but is the best one for adaptation. Kids love swinging around swords, and this plays right into that. I can't fault Saban for making that choice.

Hi, did you miss 18 years of Power Rangers? That rock you were sleeping under must have been awfully comfortable.

ITS. A. KIDS. SHOW.

You're watching Nickelodeon, and you're complaining that it's too kiddish and cheesy? Do you not know that over in Japan, this show is ALSO being watched by 6 year olds that run around drawing kanji in the air and yelling "REKKA DAIZANTOU?" Sorry, I'm just getting tired of people complaining about Power Rangers like it should be a drama made for adults. It's the thing that's bringing American comics down, too.

Power Rangers in the past has been cheesy, yes. And now that they're following the same plot and story of the original show, people are still calling it cheesy while praising the original. If Shinkenger was in English to begin with, we'd get tired of hearing Takeru say "That's far enough, Gedoushuu!" or listening to the entire roll call and speech every episode. It's the whole nature of the show!

The problem with samurai goes beyond it just being a copy. It's main problem is that it lacks a lot of the things that made shinkenger work.

You know I understand it's a kid show but there have been shows that have been marketed to kids and still have been a good show. No ones asking for a n adult marketed power rangers just good power rangers. The reason Rpm was so great was because it had a good story but was also funny. People hated the kalish seasons because at the end of the day they just weren't good shows regardless.

I'm gonna assume you either A. never watched MMPR, or B. haven't watched it since your childhood and have nothing but cloudy memories of what the show was actually like to compare it to...because your statement couldn't be further from the truth. Now, if you said it was as ridiculous as say Turbo or even WF (especially in terms of acting), I would have been fine with that statement...but not MMPR.

Your whole argument of "it's a kids show therefore it won't have steller acting" is BS, too. I'm sorry, but just because it's a kids show doesn't mean it has to have absolutely NO standards in terms of acting prowess from it's cast. That's a cop-out argument if and when we have a series that's considered "bad."

At least Samurai is politically correct...unlike MMPR with it's black black ranger, asian yellow ranger and uber girly pink one >_>

Also i'm sorry but MMPR did not have great acting, in fact no Power Rangers has had great acting (probably why none of them have gone on to become big time stars). The premise of Power Rangers has always been good fighting evil with lots of explosions and giant robots going "pew pew". Samurai does have horrid acting, but as I said, Power Rangers is not meant to be a Shakespearian Play, it's meant to be an action show.
