I can say in all seriousness, I would totally see this, if it were real.
I think the anorexic Pikachu works in the context of the story, with Pokemon training being illegal in forced underground in harsh conditions.

Man I cracked up at the "I choose you" line.
The Pokemon Special / Pokemon Adventures manga is where it's at. 30someodd volumes of actual story and characterization (and some really interesting stuff involving Silver) with pretty spiffy art. It isn't grimdark or anything, but it can be plenty dramatic and is generally a well crafted story.
