Overrated and underrated sentai series

i am still relatively new to sentai, but i thought gokaiger is a great gateway to the genre. it gives people a brief outline of the genre and gives people an idea on what to watch. ill agree its not a perfect series, but it is a lot of fun. im not riding on marvelous, but i thought there was much more to the series than him. i liked how it really fleshed out the cast and really goes far to demonstrate how that character is useful to the team and why they are needed, especially don who tends to feel useless and isnt really the strongest. i thought gai had this charismatic enthusiasm with his energy. i loved how the actor brought that energy out even though a lot of actors in this genre can do it. but i do agree the villains arent the greatest, mostly (ill use the katakana spelling) waruzu giru was an annoying brat, but i thought his father was great and menacing, but not really fully developed.

but threads like this is why i now review sentai on my youtube channel.

Goseiger generates conflicted feelings on me. I love many aspects of it (concept, designs, battle choreography, fuckin' GoseiKnight, Brajira...) but others repel me (horrible story pacing, unfitting casting choices, non-Brajira enemies were lame...). I believe it's a series of such extreme good and bad points it's not strange it's become a "Love it/Hate it" series among the fandom.

However, while I feel that Goseiger doesn't deserve all the crap it usually gets, I feel many of those who jump into its defense tend to overlook its faults too much. Being fair means that while nobody should ignore Goseiger's good points, the same way the bad points can't be ignored.

I feel Go-Busters shouldn't be judged until the series is over. The feared middle part of the show has just started and we must wait to see how they are going to deal with it this year. However, I'm liking that while Masato and J have lightened the series' mood, it hasn't detracted of the overall serious tone of it.

There's a difference between reasoned criticism of the series, and mindless bashing - where someone feels the need to constantly state in every single thread that Goseiger is THE WORST SERIES EVER and it was just sooooo bland and boring and Alata was gay and all the cast look like they're five etc. etc. Of course fandom is never going to stick to the former, and that's why I for one am such a vocal defender of the show. When people are ranting in every thread about Goseiger, even resurrecting old threads from months or years ago to do it, and making offensive personal remarks about the cast and crew as well, it does get tiresome. It's similar for Go-onger, Decade, and now Gokaiger too.

The Goseiger hate/defence seems to have died down a bit though, now that Gokaiger and PR Samurai are the shows taking more heat.

Thankfully the average attention span of the common fan usually only covers the current year's series and the preceding one, so the Goseiger arguments/wars have finally calmed down (unless it's intentionally called for).

I must be a minority here, but I don't really mind Kobayashi's tendency to give more importance to characters and their development than to complex plots and a faster storytelling.

One thing I'm liking about Go-Busters is that despite it's seemingly slow pace each episode always gives us some sort of information bit that will come to play sooner or later. Reminds me a bit to One Piece in this aspect. Go-Busters' story might be simple and not advance fast, but at least is being well built. Let's just hope the middle season won't be as boring as past years and at least delivers the same action we've been seering so far...

I do like that Kobayashi gives a lot of importance to her characters. I'm a fan of her work myself and love Shinkenger because of the effort she puts into the characters. I also like the little details she's put into Go-Busters, like the mechanic and maintenance crew. It is a lot more than some toku writers who tend to develop one or two characters and forget the rest (Michiko Yokote comes to mind). It's just that when a series is 50 episodes long, having slow moments can make the show feel boring at times. She's not the only toku writer that's guilty of slow pace shows either.

the episodes are hard to find, but i would still say it's underrated due to it being missing/rejected from the sentai lineup
