What is a Hard Sub, and what is a Soft Sub?

More precisely explained, soft-subs means they're loaded from an external file by the software you're running.

Hardsubs are, well, hard-encoded into the video itself, not requiring any additional subtitle-files.

Personally, I prefer Over-Time' subtitles for their… I guess, more "natural sound" to the lines. Not a big fan of keeping Japanese honorifics or words like "Henshin" untranslated, either.
Nevertheless, TV-Nihon did get me more into Toku at large and they do get the general points across, so, yah.

A softsub doesn't necessarily have to be a seperate file. The distinction is that you can turn off soft subtitles, but hardsubs are 'hard-coded' (hence the name) into the video.

Softsubs can come in the form of either a raw, unsubtitled video file and a seperate subtitle file, as mentioned, or they can come in the form of a 'mux', which is both put together into one file (most fansubs in .mkv format are muxes like this)

You also get hybrids where karaoke effects or complicated signs are hardcoded into the video (because they can be very CPU-intensive to render as softsubs) while the dialogue is soft-subbed.

I liked TVN in their first years. The Faiz, Blade and Hibiki subs were okay, despite some minor errors.
Then when we got to Kabuto... I don't know what happened, but the translation started to become more and more direct, which left us with some strange dialogue.
ex: saying "That is...?" instead of "What is this?"

Then Den-O came, and this is where TVN began to lose me as a viewer.
First of all, I found the different text formats and colors extremely confusing. They claimed that it was to please the deaf viewers, but I have never seen a program on TV, where each character had his own unique text style and color.

Not only that, but the direct translations combined with the untranslated puns got extremely confusing.
Whenever Urataros said something, I had to go back and pause to get the meaning of what he actually meant.
Not to mention many of Kintaros' lines that were left completely untranslated because they couldn't come up with any words that rhymed with "cry"

The came Kiva, which I thought was okayish, but the colored text and multiple styles still annoyed me.
Then came Decade, where on top of everything else, they started adding the subs directly under the character who spoke, so that it kept jumping from side to side.
When two or more characters were saying something at the same time, there would be 2 to 3 separate subtitles under them. That was just too much.

I am sticking with OT, simply because they work like the professional translators that you see on TV or on official DVD's.
They also provide you with the script, which I see as an extemely user-friendly service.
There are many international fans out there, including myself, who want to present toku to friends and familly members, and instead of doing an entirely new srt. or ass.file, I can just take OT's script, translate it to my own language and create a hardsubbed copy for my familly and friends to watch.

TVN has their thing, and I don't really mind if others enjoy it. It is just not my cup of tea

I think a friend and I started a drinking game of taking a shot every time "jikuu" was translated as "space/time" in the latter parts of Kabuto.

I personally am a fan of the different colored text, at least, on the three shows I've seen so far, as done by TV-Nihon.

I also like that in the one episode of Kuuga I checked out from them, they translated the Grongi speaking, in contrast to whatever sub we're watching that doesn't, nor does it subtitle any of the printed Japanese (signs, newspapers, etc), which we really liked about TN and OT with W and OOOs. But I only saw 8 episodes of Kuuga on their site, and I couldn't find Kuuga at all on OT's site. Is there another sub someplace that translates the Grongi speech?

I choose Nihon because they work on my computer and BD player and if I hit the delete button when it is highlighted, it will delete. OT's subs refuse to delete off my computer for the first few weeks.

Midnight Crew subs are doing v2s of Kuuga where they translate the Grongi speech. Their original version has it untranslated, but it's complete! (if you care about them being complete or not :laugh

There are a lot of groups out there doing a lot of different stuff (some alternatives to TVN). Just sayin' cause it's awesome to give everyone a try, and then choose whatever the hell :laugh: It would take a long time to list all of them here, but if you want them just PM me and I'll be sure to list 'em :thumbs:

This was discussed before. Personally, this has happened to me a whole bunch of times, but then that means that the text document that I made is a virus and is coming to get me. I hate to sound like a jerk, because people have many reasons for liking and disliking stuff, but anything can end up not deleting because the computer believes the file is still in use. It has nothing to do with OT and their subs. Also, updating codecs = OT subs working immediately, and not sure about a BD player. You can play their MKVs on a PS3 though.

As it was clarified on that thread you made (on which you asked for help, then failed to acknowledge any of the replies asking you for more details or pointing out solutions, and then blamed it on us) the problem resided on your computer, not on the file we distributed.
