Omnitech GAIEA (A Sentai story)

Log 9: Rebuilt! Creation’s Bane

*Last Episode Recap Theme 1 plays*
(‘Shinkou! Machine Teikoku...’ from Chouriki Sentai Ohranger)

Blane grabbed the other Braces and threw them to the others, who transformed and cut their way out of the cage. They went to help Blane, but he didn’t seem to need it. Even without a protective suit he was holding his own against the aliens, shooting those far away and grappling those who came closer, as he went to retrieve the unconscious girl.
“You don’t want a hand, General?†Anthony called as he saw Blane beat down a Larva. Blane shot another Larva about to attack the red-clad leader.
“… Point taken.â€
“Keep these guys busy, I’ll get the girl outta here!â€
He picked up the girl and dashed back to the jeep.

Nikolas joined his teammates and together they set their G-Rifles for a finishing volley. Larva were mowed down and destroyed. The remaining Nympha seemed to cast looks of derision at Pinkhasov with their green eyes.
“**** *****!â€
“No!†Pinkhasov protested, but the order was repeated. Pinkhasov cursed under his breath and activated a remote to self-destruct the lab.
“He’s set the place to blow!†said Omar when they heard a timer count down. Pinkhasov and the Archons beat a hasty retreat. Team GAIEA tried to summon Archelon, which arrived just as the final seconds ticked away.

Back outside, Blane tended to the now stirring girl when he heard an implosion from underground. For a moment he feared the worst, but then he saw Archelon emerge back to the surface…

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pinkhasov was brought before five Archons in what appeared to be a small council chamber. They stayed in the shadows away from their dim lights, but the old Russian could recognize their features as that of Imatos, the adult Archons and overlords of their race. Between him and they was a lit floor design of the Archon insignia.

The atmosphere here would have been enough to frighten a normal human, but Pinkhasov had gone beyond mere humans. He waited, silent and without emotion, for one of the Imatos to speak. They then came out into the light, but not before donning human forms, much to his disappointment; he much desired to see these aliens as they truly were. Nevertheless their green eyes betrayed the wicked alien beneath the skin.
“Your work thus far is not meeting expectations†one of them spoke in Earth language, or as best as he could speak it.
“There have been obvious setbacks†Pinkhasov replied quietly. Having spoken with Imatos before he could expect them to not lash out at him… but it couldn’t be wise to try their patience for too long.
“Team GAIEA was placed right into your hands and you let them get away†answered another.
“Their general saved them.â€
“An old man. An old man beats you, whom we bestowed our knowledge and made a god among men?â€
“But they haven’t discovered everything. We are closer to finding the Heart than they believe. And despite the previous interruption I am making a breakthrough with your cybernetics. You shall have the perfect hybrid, one that can retain his mind rather than suppressing it and add it to your collective.â€
“And yet you refuse to do the same to yourself?â€
Now Pinkhasov was nervous. This was a topic he would rather avoid. “One day, perhaps. But not yet. Give me more time.â€
“You will have but little. We have… other assets that may be of better use.â€

Pinkhasov was dismissed. On the way out he caught sight of a group of military officials waiting for an Archon host and looking around with discomfort. He saw a Venezuelan flag pin on one of them and they were whispering to each other in Spanish. Could they be the “other assets†spoken of? He climbed back into the Pod lent to him and descended back to Earth…

“Hey, look at this!â€
One of Anthony’s coworkers at the construction site, a burly man who looked taken straight from a 80s movie, tossed a copy of the day’s newspaper opened to an obscure article.
“You like all that alien stuff, right? Read there.â€
Anthony skimmed the article about a man named Brett Azral, who decades ago claimed to have had reverse-engineered alien technology the U.S. military housed in secret bases. He was now announcing that his research organization had recovered the remains of an Archon and rebuilt it. Azral intended to use this Archon to investigate its origins.
“You think he’s genuine?†Anthony asked the man.
“Who knows?†he shrugged. “Everyone’s now going on about UFOs and aliens. The whole thing is crazy. I’m betting it’s all just one big ruse.â€
“By whom?â€
“Russians, Chinese… any one of those big guys wanting to scare everyone. I even heard a street preacher saying the end of the world was coming. It’s all crazy.â€

Anthony smiled along with him, but assumed a concerned demeanor once he left to yell at some other workmen. This could be trouble.

* * *

“I see we’re of like mind†said Blane once Anthony had a chance to report in. He spoke to the Team via their ComUnits as they took a break from their jobs. “I’m sure the enemy will target him soon.â€
“Do you know this man?†asked Omar.
“I saw him 30 years ago when he first came out about his work with aliens. I’m sure he is sincere, or at least believes he is. He hasn’t sought publicity in all this time.â€
“He might want to cash in while all this UFO talk is going on†Sita pointed out.
“Nevertheless he cannot be ignored. Ms. Harris, I believe you’re in the perfect position to investigate this.â€

Emma was surprised. Blane certainly hadn’t forgotten the incident with her UFO chasers, and she didn’t expect him to ever give her a specific assignment. Regarding her college friends, Tim and Gillian had been let go by the authorities but Brandon remained missing. They seemed unaffected by their experience in all but a drop in enthusiasm toward, almost a fear of the subject, and Emma tried to avoid them and their group more and more.
“I’ll see what I can do†she replied.
“I’ll join you†said Sita. “We don’t know what might happen, so it’s better if none of us are alone.â€
‘What’s that supposed to mean?’ Emma thought to herself, slightly annoyed. It felt more like she wanted to keep an eye on her, resolute in her “big sister†mindset.
“Very well. I’ll leave you to it.â€
Fine, let her come. It didn’t really matter…. though then again she might have preferred Nikolas as a partner.

Blane hung up on them and sat alone pensively. More tampering with things that should have been left buried and forgotten. What was Azral thinking? He decided that he might go see him personally if things went too far...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brett Azral was a thin man with silky, limp hair and large glasses. He seemed nervously excited as he invited the handful of investigators and otherwise curious into his organization’s facility. Among them were Emma, Gillian and Sita (who was, a bit comically, sporting a cub reporter fedora). Gillian clearly didn’t want to be here. Emma had to strongarm her into coming along despite her newfound apprehension toward this subject matter (“You don’t know what I’ve seen†she had hissed to her, after inquiring as to how she had escaped the base that night). She and Sita kept their ComPads hidden as they scanned the facility while Azral spoke.
“I managed to reconstruct as much of the original body with the pieces we could find†– at this Emma and Sita exchanged looks; either the recovery teams had slipped up or there was a mole in Prometheus Base – “the rest I supplemented with parts of my own. So in essence what you shall see up close is a real Archon, albeit, shall we say, domesticated.â€

The guests laughed politely. They would have clamored to see the alien despite the danger. Azral brought them to a laboratory where, lying on a table, was the rebuilt Archon larva. The two heroines let their fingers hover over the laser trigger on their ComBraces. If anything went wrong they might have to take action.
“Presenting Lazarus†Azral declared proudly. “Get up!â€

*BGM plays*
(‘Lady Soldier (1)’ from Dengeki Sentai Changeman)

Some of his audience’s faces reflected recognition, but not enough for his liking. Lazarus rose and slowly scanned everyone with a turn of his head.
“We haven’t restored complete functionality, so his speech is limited. But I believe his data tracks are still intact. I plan to delve into them to see just what makes these aliens, or alien robots tick.â€
“… Brett†Lazarus rasped.
“Yes†Azral nodded. “It’s me. Say hello to our guests.â€
Sita watched the whole scene with incredulity. It was all rather absurd, seeing this enemy pawn reduced to an attraction at a convention or expo. The others now seemed perfectly comfortable with Lazarus as it exchanged with them. Even Gillian was fascinated.

“What do you think?†Emma whispered to her. Sita glanced at Azral and Lazarus together. The pretentiousness of his choice of name bothered her. She felt this would be bad karma. Sita pretended to dial her Pad like a phone while scanning the Archon. It seemed as defanged as Azral said.
“I don’t like it†she replied.
“He looks safe enough. Besides, we could use whatever info he might find out.â€
“True… but we should keep him on a short leash anyway†Sita forwarded her intel back to base, and Emma followed suit. After looking it over, Blane decided to pay this man from the past a visit…

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Later that night as Azral was about to head home he found a surprise waiting for him. Blane, by some unexplained manner, was waiting for him in the small conference room.
“General Blane†he greeted softly, hiding his surprise and irritation. He remembered him from thirty years prior when he had first revealed his experiences. “How did you get in here?â€
“Never mind that†said Blane. “I want to talk to you.â€
“Just like that? You barge into places and expect people to do what you say?â€
“I doubt you would have accepted a request on the phone.â€
“… Perhaps not†Azral walked to a small case near a bookcase where he had stored some alcohol. “Well since you’re here, would you care for a drink? Or is this official business?â€
“I’ll have one†Blane received a glass of whiskey and drank slowly. Azral however hovered over him, almost intent on not making himself comfortable.

“You came to stop me from working on this Archon.â€
“I came to warn you. This is highly dangerous stuff you are dabbling in. If you continue on you might wind up dead.â€
“Is that a threat?â€
“It’s a fact. The Archons are a curse on humanity, and we ourselves cast it because we didn’t heed the ancients. But… on the other hand, I share your interest in the Archons’ origins. If we know what they are and where they came from, we might find a way to defeat them. Or at least prepare for whatever else is out there.â€
“I see†Azral finished his glass. “So you want to join me in my endeavor.â€

Blane placed his glass alongside Azral’s and rose to his feet. Azral shrank back just a bit, trying to conceal his slight intimidation toward the tall man. Blane seemed to know this and used it to his advantage.
“I won’t stop you, on one condition. You have heard of Team GAIEA. I have connections with them and their organization, and have requested they oversee your little experiment tomorrow. The Archons are sure to find out about what you’re doing and will want to stop you.â€
Azral frowned. “I guess it would be pointless to protest, would it?â€
“Either they guard you or I’ll give the word and have your group shut down. There are people who already want to silence you, no doubt scared of what you might find or to maintain the cover-up, useless as it now is.â€
“I thought you wanted to find out too.â€
“Not at the cost of more lives.â€

Azral searched Blane’s face for any hint of leniency, a chance for a loophole, but found nothing.
“Fine†he conceded. “But they can only protect my colleagues. Do not let them interfere with whatever I try to do.â€
“I can’t promise that.
Azral sighed. “I have seen what is out there, General. I have worked with alien technology for years. You know this. I know what I’m doing.â€
“I hope so… Thank you for the drink.â€
Blane left the room, leaving Azral standing alone…

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Azral and his team planned to conduct their experiment at a rock field within the boundaries of a nearby national forest. They set up camp in the afternoon and waited for the stars to appear in the darkening sky. Azral’s plan was to position Lazarus at the center of the field and, with the help of a computer system he had installed inside his body that could access his databanks, have the alien scan the black expanse to search for the direction of his homeworld. The evening sky would in effect be a gigantic road map. In such a wide flat area, they would be particularly vulnerable if the Archons decided on an aerial strike. Team GAIEA had sent Archelon to fly around via remote should that occur, while they took inconspicuous positions around the team.

Azral took a moment to marvel at the dots of light emerging as the sun went down. He thought back to his time at the secretive military bases decades ago, relegated to lightless labyrinths beneath the earth to puzzle over the wondrous otherworldly machinery so cruelly hidden from the world. He had tried his best to reveal the truth when he first exposed his work, but too few had taken him seriously, and he was soon forgotten. Now he would show the world definitely where these invaders came from… if they were even the same ETs whose technology he had seen. He wasn’t sure, and he of course couldn’t compare to any records, as he hadn’t been allowed to keep any.

“What are we doing here?†Lazarus asked Azral in a slow voice.
“I want to find out where you came from†Azral explained. “While I access your databanks I want you to look up at those stars. It might help trigger your memory.â€
Lazarus gave no indication that he understood Azral’s purpose. But he inclined his head upward and stared at the field of innumerable white, bluish, and occasional red lights. To Anthony, Lazarus almost looked like a character from one of those sci-fi movies about a lost alien searching for a way home. Despite the pitiless, insect-like black eyes, he seemed a bit awestruck.

He then noticed Azral’s aides advancing toward him in unison. Something about their gait seemed unnatural.
“Look at the aides†Omar said. He and the others had picked up on it too; they zoomed their helmets’ binocular vision onto their faces and spotted pairs of green eyes.
“They’re Archons!†yelled Anthony. “Move in and keep them from Azral!â€
So this was their plan. Somehow the Archons had usurped the real aides without their knowledge. The Team rushed in on their Dashers and formed a wall between the aliens and Azral and Lazarus. Azral took a look back and jumped. His scan wasn’t even half complete and hadn’t yet produced anything. He could not afford interruptions now.
“Come on Lazarus†he urged, dragging the Archon further away. Lazarus remained transfixed on the sky.
“Gazelle, stay on Azral!†ordered Anthony. Omar rode toward them while the rest dismounted to engage the enemy. They peeled off their human faces and shed their clothes, revealing themselves as Nympha.
“** *!†One of them commanded. Larva appeared out of nowhere, some going after Omar. The heroes took on the remainder and their Nympha commanders.

Omar caught up with Azral.
“Get to cover, now!â€
“Are you mad? I can’t stop the scan now! Cover me!â€
Omar grimaced at the man’s bossy mannerism, but did his best to shoot down the grunts. Archelon came to his aide and blew up a good number of them. He charged up his G-Blade and finished off the remainder with several well-placed strokes. Azral checked his handheld computer screen plugged into Lazarus. Something at last had awoken his pre-programmed memories. Dozens of images flashed on screen in an incomprehensible blur. Millennia of information from the travels of his race, all preserved and duplicated into its progeny, all connected as though a single being.

One image froze for a few seconds: a great explosion rising from ancient Earth observed by some unknown recorder.

galaxyartwallpaperimg14.jpg

And another… this was most disturbing…. a silver-grey silhouette of modern man, not the primitives who had witnessed the crash landing on Earth. Yet somehow it was not quite human… Azral’s heart froze, and Omar choked. Could it be…?

But they were interrupted by a large circular flying machine, larger than the Pods, that zapped them with energy bolts.

robotdesignbygeneralpee.jpg

Omar and Azral were thrown away from each other, and Lazarus clattered to the center of the field. Omar’s teammates caught up with them as Azral made a dash toward Lazarus.
“GET BACK!†Omar yelled but the scientist continued running. Another zap from the vessel sent him flying away several yards and landing in a heap. Archelon fired upon it, but its shields protected it from any harm.
“What is that thing??†Emma exasperated. They soon found out its pilot as the craft landed on four arthropodic legs and a being descended to the ground in a column of light. Once the column disappeared they could all see him clearly.

There for the first time in the open was an Imato, the Archons’ adult form. A near-fully cybernetic, insectoid slander against nature. Even just standing still, all present could suddenly feel chilled. The Imato had with him a staff that he raised toward his ship. It sent several bolts of energy at once like a wide net. The ground ripped apart in explosions. The heroes were scattered, sent flailing and sliding over the rocky terrain, and had their suits severely mangled. Azral sprawled on the ground, his eyes widened in horror. Lazarus rose to a sitting position and stared blankly at his brethren.

“AZRAL!†yelled Anthony. “GET AWAY!â€
But the Imato had summoned Larva from the ship that surrounded and seized Azral. He froze again as the head alien stood before him and stared silently at him for a long moment. But then the Imato went over to Lazarus, lifting him to his feet.
“Put me down†he muttered. The Imato stared at him, almost puzzled at this behavior. Then he muttered something to himself in his own tongue and summoned a large device onto his hand.

archonimato4.png

He plugged it into Lazarus and began accessing all the information inside him, seeing what Azral had discovered.
“** *** ** * *****â€
He used the device to reprogram Lazarus and destroyed Azral’s plugged in computer. Lazarus changed his posture and started to move more like the other Larva. He came up to Azral, who began to feel more nervous than ever.
“… Lazarus?â€
Lazarus said nothing.
“…It’s me… Brett… you know me, Lazarus.â€
But Lazarus gave no recognition. Ejecting his proboscis laser, he shot his resurrector once in the head. Azral fell lifeless to the ground.
“NO!†Sita cried. Nikolas, in a last-ditch attempt to get a hit in, removed his belt buckle that doubled as a grenade and hurled it at the aliens. The others followed suit and they managed to push them back beneath the ship. Archelon fired again on them, but the Imato brought them all back inside. The heroes could only watch as it disappeared into the night sky…

The Team had returned to Prometheus Base with Brett Azral’s body. One unpleasant debriefing later they all gathered at the top of the island that hid the complex and stared out into the starry night.
“This might be small comfort†said Blane, coming to join them. “But they would have gotten to him sooner or later. We’ve already discovered more about them than they ever imagined. This last secret won’t be revealed so easily.â€

Omar shifted uncomfortably. He had not mentioned the two clear images he had seen in his debriefing. Nikolas masked whatever feelings he had. Anthony however was visibly disturbed over Azral’s death. How had they botched things up so badly? A man was dead, and their chance to see their enemy fully revealed gone.
“This had all better be worth it†he said quietly.
“God help us if not†Omar replied, almost to himself.
Blane directed his sight up to the sky. Somewhere out there was the Archons’ homeworld. Their mysterious but no doubt destructive path was laid out before them, if only they could find and follow it. He remembered the warnings of the ancients that had been discovered along with the first Archon ruins.

God would not help them. In fact, if his deepest fear was true, He would allow his failed creation to destroy itself through the alien abominations it had so recklessly made free…

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Omar cried out in his sleep and jolted himself awake. He looked at the time on his ComBrace and sighed, then wiped the sweat from his brow. The images he had briefly seen in Lazarus’s databanks continued to haunt his mind, but he couldn’t understand why. His only suspicion was the anthropoid silhouette, so human-like and yet bearing a monstrous secret. What did it all mean?

Failing to fall back asleep he dragged himself out of bed and ambled into the living room. There he found Nikolas leaning against the kitchen counter drinking a glass of liquor.
“What are you doing up?†he asked Omar with the slightest of slurs.
“I just got up†Omar shrugged. He eyed the German critically as he came into the kitchen. “And what are you doing getting drunk at this hour?â€
It was perhaps too curt a question, but Nikolas seemed not to take offense. Omar now noticed he was toying with his standard issue pistol, slowly twirling and setting it down again in repetition, almost oblivious to the danger.
“You ever wonder why you were chosen to be on this team?†he muttered. “Maybe your superiors just wanted to get rid of you.â€
Omar paused. “Is that what they did to you?â€
“I don’t have many fans†replied Nikolas. “I’m not like our Cuban friend.â€
“Is this jealously I hear?†Omar asked a bit amusedly.
“Perhaps I’m the mole you’re looking out for†Nikolas waved the pistol uncomfortably toward Omar’s direction. Omar frowned at the bottle next to him and slowly drew it away.
“Perhaps you’ve had enough for one night.â€

The two locked eyes. Omar hid his contempt at the sight of him, but he doubted it would have mattered to a man like Nikolas. And yet he looked troubled by something, for why else would be up at this hour mixing drink and guns so riskily? Or perhaps he and Emma were just as decadent as Omar believed.
“You might want to sober up before the general sees you†he said simply.
“I think you should have a drink yourself†replied Nikolas. He looked at Omar with sudden interest. “You look like you need one.â€
“I don’t drink†the Egyptian replied bluntly.
“You mean you don’t drink with scoundrels like me†Nikolas retorted. “Don’t try to be prim, I can see right through it. I say the more proper you act, the more of a bastard you are.â€
Omar bristled. He answered as coolly as possible. “That’s the liquor talking, so I’ll forgive you. But watch what you say to me in the future. Good night.â€
He swept past Nikolas back to his room. Nikolas stared at his pistol and the remainder of his glass for a moment, then slid the former roughly off the counter and drained the latter. The pistol’s fully loaded magazine lay on the sofa far away from the weapon…

General Blane seemed especially grim when he summoned the Team to Prometheus Base the next morning.
“What’s wrong, sir?†asked Sita.
“Bad news and worse news†said Blane. “I’ve just had a chat with a fellow Omnitech member in U.S. intelligence. It appears we definitely have a mole in our midst.â€
Everyone looked at each other. Omar, remembering last night, gave Nikolas particular attention.
“It’s not related to us…. so far as we know†Blane continued. “But we are aware now that someone has been leaking info to an unknown party.â€
He gave a quick glance to Emma. Despite his words just now she felt he was connecting this to her escapade at the army base. She then remembered that Brandon was still at large.
“So what is the worse news?†asked Anthony.
“This.â€

Blane brought up an image on the large screen of a Russian scientific station in Antarctica. “Our satellites recorded this video over the last three days.â€
They saw what looked like an ancient, giant statue of an anthropoid with a pair of wings wrapped around its body like a cape being slowly excavated. Next they saw a large container being assembled around it and a fleet of helicopters ready to haul it away.
“Who could have built such a statue so long ago?†asked Sita.
“Not a statue†corrected Blane. “A robot.â€
“What?†They all looked at him perplexed.
“According to ancient records this robot fell to Earth at the same time as the Archon Mothership all those millennia ago.â€
“It looks a bit like Mothman†said Anthony as he studied the video.
“Mothman?†asked Emma.
“An urban legend from West Virginia†Blane explained. “And it happens to be our codename for this robot. The Russians are trying to abscond with it for themselves against the Omnitech Project charter. It is up to you to stop them.â€
“Do you think the Archons will come after it?†asked Nikolas.
“You can count on that†said the general. “They’ll either destroy it or convert it into another of their weapons.â€
“So a two-on-one fight†Anthony mulled. “This will be tricky.â€
“I trust in your leadership, Eagle†Blane replied almost with a shrug. Anthony smiled uneasily.
“Right. Let’s move.â€

As the Team went to depart Emma hung back for a moment and looked to Blane. His confirmation of a mole coupled with Brandon’s disappearance still bothered her. She wanted to know more.
“You’re dismissed, Snake†said Blane firmly. Emma thought he perceived her purpose. She would not be getting an elaboration. Emma jogged after her teammates to Archelon’s hangar…

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“So that’s Mothman†said Emma when Anthony brought up a picture of it on Archelon’s computer.

“He’s a bit scary†said Sita.
“I don’t know… the eyes could be cute†Emma replied. “Like those toy spiders on Halloween.â€
Sita gave a slight shiver. Nikolas smiled. “Well I know what I’ll be next Halloween.â€

The flight down to Antarctica went without incident, but once they were in sight of the frozen wilderness their alien enemy came to attack with a swarm of Pods.
“They’re not wasting time†Omar commented. Archelon put up a decent fight against the swarm, but more and more came to replace those destroyed. Anthony then summoned U.F.O. to come down. The massive flying fortress decloaked and glided above Archelon, giving it cover fire against the Pods and letting it continue on. The white spheres were no match for the carrier mecha, and it made short work of them.

The Team flew low to the ground once they drew nearer to their target.
“Looks like the base is under siege†said Omar.
“A two-pronged attack. They anticipated our arrival almost to the minute†Nikolas wondered.
“You don’t think our mole is working with them, do you?†Sita asked quickly.
“Conjectures later†Anthony ordered. After firing on the attacking Pods they exited to the ground and, a bit awkwardly in the snow, fought off the Larvae. The Russian soldiers saw Team GAIEA crash their fight and began to draw back toward base. At the helipad pilots rushed into their copters and began revving them up.
“Look!†said Emma after taking down a Larva, pointing to the helicopters. “They’re trying to get away!â€
They reassembled and charged toward the last wall of Larvae.
“Set Rifles! Fire!†commanded Anthony. They combined their G-Pistols and Blades to G-Rifles and blew them up in a finishing volley. When they came to the base the Russians filed out with high-power weaponry and pointed them at the multi-colored team.
“Stand down!†their leader ordered in English through a thick accent. “Drop your weapons and come quietly!â€
“Don’t they realize who we are?†Omar asked angrily. “You’re in violation of the Omnitech Charter!â€
“Drop your weapons! You won’t be warned again!â€
“You have no authority over us!†yelled Anthony. “You stand down!â€
“That’s enough†said a voice behind them. A grizzled Russian commander came into view. “Stand down†he ordered his soldiers in Russian, and then turned to the heroes.
“Team GAIEA. We had hoped to get away unnoticed.â€
“We need to have a little talk†said Anthony in his most authoritative voice. He wondered if a man such as this would take kindly to being ordered about by someone much younger.
“I am General Chernosky. Come inside.â€
The heroes slowly lowered their arms and followed the Russians out of the cold…

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“This is all a big misunderstanding†Chernosky explained. He stood at one end of a small table while Team GAIEA, still in their costumes, stood together opposite. Around them the base was bustling with hurried activity. Monitors were positioned everywhere flashing various Antarctic images.

“Do enlighten us, General†said Anthony. He saw a thin grimace on the man’s face before he continued. He wanted very much to see the faces behind the masks, but knew better than to demand that.
“We anticipated that Archons would launch an attack on this robot, so my government decided it best to get it out of here as fast as we could.â€
“Without informing the other Omnitech members?†asked Sita.
“Regrettably there was no time - â€
“Three days and you had no time? Do you expect us to believe that?â€
Chernosky did his best to maintain a polite demeanor. He was not used to being cut off. “I assure you, my friends, there is nothing underhanded about this. Simply a failure to communicate. Now -†He assumed a firm tone to regain a dominant position. “We have a common enemy. Let’s figure out a way to deal with them and protect this robot.â€
The Team was still skeptical. Chernosky was called away by an associate and he quickly got away from them. Anthony observed him carefully, pondering their next move.

“He’s lying†said Blane when they reported to him. “But he can’t try anything now that you’re there, and with the Archons at his doorstep. As long as we can protect it, Mothman is in our hands.â€
“Do they know about Pinkhasov†asked Nikolas. “What if he’s an agent for them and this Archon attack is a ruse?â€
“Pinkhasov went off the grid once the Soviet Union collapsed. It’s possible his government found him again, but I don’t believe he’s working for anyone but himself. Nonetheless, I think it best you don’t mention him.â€
“Are we getting anyone to pick up Mothman?†asked Anthony.
“A team is en route to you. Keep an eye on our Russian friends and make sure the Archons don’t so much as touch that robot.â€
“Yes sir†they replied in unison.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chernosky later summoned the Team to him and pointed to a large monitor. “Our guests have returned.â€
A new squadron of Pods had arrived, now reinforced by a set of the flat-bodied, arthropod-like Walkers. Charging before them was a mass of Larvae led by five Nymphae. And coming from the other side was another surprise: another giant mecha created from part of the old Mothership.

tankn.jpg

“It’s another of the Progeny†said Blane via comlink.
“Progeny 2, then†muttered Omar.
“Get men on the turrets. Send infantry out against the ground forces†Chernosky barked to his subordinates.
“No, wait†said Anthony. “I have an idea.â€
He quickly let his teammates and Blane in on his plan.
“Do it†answered the general.

The Argentum Fleet launched from U.F.O., combined into Silverado and landed before Progeny 2. Its sentience was activated so it could act without its pilots. Progeny 2 rolled forward guns blazing.
“Barrier Shield!†U.F.O. deposited the shield at Silverado’s command. A pair of arms unfolded from Progeny 2’s front. The two titanic machines started wrestling with each other.

Meanwhile Team GAIEA activated their Camo Modes. Their Core Power Units shut down and their bodies turned invisible. They used the footpaths clear of snow and formed a line between the base and coming Larvae.
“VULCANS ready†whispered Anthony. They aimed their Vulcans at the horde. The white grunts hastened their approach, searching for any target to bring down.
“Steady… lock on… fire!â€

They unloaded on the Larvae as soon as they were nearly on top of them. The Russian turret men who had lain hidden now fired the big guns at the Pods and Walkers. The cold air was soon filled with lasers, bullets and missiles.

Once the Larvae were taken out Team GAIEA took on the Nymphae, one for each of them. Archelon assaulted the Walkers, ducking and bobbing between their legs and flying circles around them like a pesky insect over its giant host. Omar then noticed that Mothman’s container was emitting a faint aurora-like glow.
“What the...â€
He suddenly flashed back to what he had seen inside Lazarus: the brilliant flash of the Mothership… and Mothman impacting Earth. But now he saw something more: the ground of a distant planet being vacuumed up into a portal, and the supernova of a star unknown to humans.

His Nymphae took advantage of his distraction to knock him around some and thrown him into the snow.
“Gazelle! What are you doing??†Sita called to him. Omar scrambled back up and shot the Nymphae back with his G-Pistol.
“Set Rifles! Fire!†commanded Anthony. A volley of G-Rifle fire destroyed four of the five. The last one stumbled forward without taking notice. He seemed not to move on his own, but controlled by a higher conscious emanating from one of the Walkers. Nikolas noticed parts of his body were now lit up as it approached them with open arms. “He’s gonna blow!â€
Anthony quickly separated his Rifle into Blade and Pistol, charged up the former and threw it like a knife. It stabbed into the center of the lights (where Anthony had guessed the detonator was) and made the Nymphae explode pre-maturely.
“Good eye†Anthony complimented Nikolas. But there was little time to relax. The Walkers had arrived at the container and were blasting away. Archelon was shot down and it crashed into the ice.
“VULCANS ready!†They fired their VULCANS in Cannon and Laser Modes. The Walkers responded the same as in their previous encounter, but now with more numbers. The heroes were sent flying wildly in all directions from the exploding projectiles. The situation looked grim. But the aurora emitted by Mothman now got stronger. A wave of energy erupted from the container, vaporizing the Walkers instantly.
“Whoa!†exclaimed Emma.
“What’s going on here?†asked Anthony.
“Questions later. Secure the container!†Blane ordered. The only threat now was Progeny 2, still engaged with Silverado.

“Yucatan Mace!†A spiked ball-and-chain weapon landed in Silverado’s hand. The robot released the tethered ball from its cup and first began to bash Progeny 2, then had the chain wrap around the mecha and dragged it back away from the container. Progeny 2 raised its head and spat more lasers. Silverado defended with the Barrier Shield attached to its left arm.
“One minute left†said Omar.
Silverado drew back the mace and swung it around its head. It began to gather energy for a finishing maneuver. Progeny 2 tried to attack again but the silver giant put it back down with shots from the Victoria Magnum.
“Meteor Hammer!†The attack announced, Silverado swung the ball down on Progeny 2 with a great smash. The machine broke apart in a firework-like display of sparks and flashes.

“Thirty seconds†said Sita. Suddenly the smashed head levitated from the wreckage and seemed to stare into Silverado’s eyes. Silverado stood motionless. The head then slowly hovered over to container and did a complete scan and recording of its contents.
“What’s it waiting for?†asked one of the Prometheus Base techs manning the computers. Shoot the damn thing!â€
Blane stood with furrowed brow and watched Silverado intently. The head finally hovered off and disappeared. Silverado broke down into its three component vehicles. Team GAIEA looked at each other with equal confusion.

Far off, the reinforcements Blane had promised began their approach. The aurora around Mothman was gone. The colossus had returned to its dormancy. Omar looked back to the container, still perplexed as to the vision he had just received…

Pinkhasov watched from behind the Imatos as the head of Progeny 2 regurgitated its information to them.

The old scientist was annoyed at being left out this way, unable to converse in their language. Perhaps they still did not trust him? Or perhaps… they might not have any use for him much longer. If that was the case he needed to do something to receive their favor again.

Omar watched as Mothman’s container was lowered into Prometheus Base’s deep pit, down into the nether regions he and the Team had yet to see. He shivered as he leaned over the railing, and it wasn’t from the cold. He was starting to have a strong urge to see the colossus within the box, even to lay a hand on it. Something was compelling him.
“Omar?â€
Anthony came up from behind him. He had noticed the Egyptian watching the transportation with trepidation. Taking his role as leader to heart, he felt the need to give counsel.
“Anything wrong?†Omar asked.
“No. Just wondering how you’re doing.â€
Omar raised his eyebrows. “I’m fine.â€
“No you’re not. You’ve been acting funny since we came back.â€

The container had disappeared from view. Omar felt a bit more relaxed, but wasn’t comfortable revealing what troubled him. His commander however showed genuine concern, without ulterior motive. And he felt he ought to tell this to someone. He at last conceded.

“I’m seeing visions†he said.
“Visions?â€
“When we were trying to see inside Lazarus’s memory, I saw… some scenes from the past. Since then I keep seeing other planets, stars, everything… all being destroyed. Being near Mothman increased it somehow.â€
Anthony took this in carefully. “Are you sure about this?â€
“Positive.â€
“Then this could be the clue we need.â€
“I hope so†Omar touched his forehead with his fingertips. He had a sudden dread of going mad from these glimpses of doom. Then he recalled the sensation he had felt near the robot and wondered… was this a relic from God? Could it even be possible?
“I wonder if we could go down there†said Anthony suddenly. Omar looked at him with surprise. “I want to see Mothman up close and personal.â€
“Will the general allow us?†asked Omar.
“I would hope he doesn’t want to hide anything from us†replied Anthony. “Let’s all see him in the morning.â€
A wish to keep the robot and its potential wonders from the others suddenly crept inside Omar, but he did not voice an objection.
“Alright.â€
“Great.†Anthony checked his watch. “I should get some sleep. You coming to the apartment now?â€
“In a bit. You go on ahead.â€
“Alright. Good night.â€
“Good night.â€

He hung over the railing a little while longer after Anthony left, delving into thought as deep down as the pit below…

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Team was roused from sleep much earlier than they cared for, despite being accustomed to it. They groggily met Blane at base’s central command.
“There’s some odd activity going on†he indicated a series of monitors showing bright lights hovering in various parts of the world, then vanishing, then reappearing again drawing closer to each other.
“Is that all?†grumbled Emma, who was most annoyed at being separated from her bed.
“Let’s keep watch†said Blane without sympathy.

For several hours they watched and waited in boredom, while fighting the urge to fall back asleep. Then as dawn passed they found a small obsidian black object flying low through morning rush. Blane looked at his five soldiers expectantly.
“Well?â€
Anthony took the hint. “Moving out.â€

*BGM plays*
(‘Black Magma shutsugen (1)’ from Taiyo Sentai Sun Vulcan)

They transformed and were teleported back to the city on their Dashers. The black object turned out to be a small car-sized aircraft that flew dangerously close to civilians and vehicles. Many people dove away in fright, and traffic came to abrupt halts as they were passed over.
“Split up and corner it†ordered Anthony. The five went in different directions to corral the object, matching it move for move. Eventually the object shot forth in a burst of speed out of the city and down a bridge overlooking a highway. Team GAIEA regrouped and pursued it against the traffic to the middle of the bridge. The craft now turned into a motorcycle, with the top sliding forward, two wheels folded down from underneath, and the pilot rising into an upright sitting position. Landing thrusters erupted before the incoming cars and made them swerve to awkward stops, clogging up the bridge behind them. Team GAIEA blocked the road on the other side.

The obsidian motorcycle came to a halt. Its rider stared down the five heroes, then dismounted and stood before them.

goldpaiche.png

He wore an Omnium suit like them, but colored gold and bearing an insectoid symbol on the chest instead of their markings. Small extensions dropped down from his headlight. A single firearm hung on his belt. The Venezuelan flag and the head of a paiche, a giant South American freshwater fish, adorned his left and right arms respectively. Anthony recalled the world map Blane had shown him during their first meeting and that South America had been colored gold.
“General - â€
“I see him†Blane replied.
“Who is this?†asked Emma.
“The South American†answered Omar. “Didn’t you get the brief on the missing sixth member?â€
If she had, Emma had forgotten. She hadn’t paid much attention, truth be told. But even Anthony was a bit surprised: the rest apparently were aware of his existence, even though Blane had never brought him up. .

“Who are you?†Anthony barked. “Who’s your C.O.?â€
Gold Paiche said nothing.
“Why didn’t you report to Base?†Still he remained silent.
“Can you talk, or do you not speak English?†Emma shot impatiently.
The man in gold flipped a switch on his bike. A set of turrets popped out from behind and sprayed the cars with gunfire.
“What -!â€
“Take him!†Anthony had his Pistol out and shot him in the heart.

The others followed suit, but he seemed hardly to take notice. Turrets opened from the front and fired on the cars behind the Team. At once they spread out to defend the panicking civilians and fell down from the impact. Another round left several cars on fire and some desperate civilians to run back down the way they drove in, and even jump over the bridge to the highway below.

“Get off the bridge! Run!†Omar commanded to those who still had their wits about them.
The gold man now took out his gun and began shooting the heroes one by one. Blade and pistol were drawn; the five began taking him one by one. The fight became a whirl of colors, punctuated by bursts of sparks. For each hit the heroes could get in, their foe returned it twofold. He seemed almost inhuman. While engaged with Sita and Anthony, Nikolas charged up his G-Blade and struck him from behind. The man froze momentarily from the blow, giving Omar time to shoot him with his G-Rifle. The others reformed the line and joined in with a group Rifle volley. The man stumbled back and rolled on the ground, and lay still.

“Is he out?†Sita whispered. The Team cautiously edged closer. But Blane saw through the ruse.
“FALL BACK!†he yelled. “FALL BACK!â€
The golden one shot up, pointed a laser from his gun at Anthony and fired a whole round into his torso. Anthony tumbled back and crumpled in a heap. The laser gun then converted into a large sword. Its owner beat off the remaining four like a wild animal, heaping heavy blows and cuts upon them. The laser sharpened the blade for one last attack. He mowed through them one by one. Gashes were torn through their suits, their cybernetic guts spilling to the road.
“Fall back!†Blane repeated again, almost imploringly. The heroes rolled and crawled toward their fallen leader. The Venezuelan stood tall, observing his handiwork like an impartial judge, garnering neither pleasure nor pain from his effort.

“Bolivar†he croaked to his motorcycle. It came out as like one who hardly ever spoke, or barely had the ability to. Bolivar the motorcycle rolled up to him. He mounted, gave some parting shots to everyone still on the bridge, and then took off into the sky…

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anthony had received the most grievous injuries, so he was forced to recuperate in the Base’s medical wing. He watched via monitor as Blane went over today’s fight with his teammates.
“You never took the time to tell us what you knew about this guy†said Omar with some restraint. Even now he dared not to stir the general’s famous ire.
“I was not told either†Anthony quickly put in, anxious not to cause a rift between the Americans and foreigners.
“There wasn’t anything to tell, until now†explained Blane. He took a seat at the table.

“Team GAIEA was originally designed to have six members, the sixth being Gold Paiche from Venezuela. Your South American representative.â€

He made an irritated face at that. Clearly there was little love for the current dictatorship in that country.
“His suit and arsenal are based on prototypes for Team GAIEA’s design. But several months ago before the Omnitech Project advanced to its present level there was an… incident… at the base where the Venezuelans kept their recovered Archon technology. No one knows what happened, but when we went to investigate the complex was destroyed, everything gone. Their government gave us no answers. But now I’m starting to suspect that they staged the whole thing and secretly defected to the Archons.â€
“What?†asked Sita. “Why would they do that?â€
“Why does anyone become a traitor?†Blane offered back. “They probably believe an alliance with the Archons will reap them great rewards, much less just using their technology for God knows what… like many other nations.
Anthony looked nervously at his four teammates, but none of them seemed perturbed at Blane’s possible attempt to goad them. Emma watched the specs of Gold Paiche and flexed a hand impatiently behind her back.

“So what do we do now?†asked Nikolas.
“I will confer with my counterparts†said Blane. “In the meantime, you are not to engage with this man in any way.â€
“Are you kidding?†blurted Emma. “What if he comes back??â€
“You are in no condition to take him, if today wasn’t an indication. We need a strategy. And until we make one I don’t need anyone doing something stupid. Am I understood?â€
Emma was annoyed. The others were no less disheartened but mumbled a “Yes sirâ€.
“Miss Harris?†said Blane sternly. Emma looked back at him.
“Understood, sir.â€
“I hope so. Dismissed.â€

Anthony lay back in his bed and stared at the white ceiling. His chest dully ached. His soldier’s pride was more damaged. He reminded himself that he was made for aerial combat, and a few adventures as a superhero weren’t enough to change that. Maybe if he had had his jet, even an ordinary Air Force one, he could have blown him away, he imagined longingly.

Then he remembered Mothman and his desire to see it with Omar. His curiosity overcame his pain and defeat. Omar was turning in early when he heard his ComPad vibrating on the bedside table. It was Anthony.
“Anthony?”
“You ready?”
“Ready for… oh that” he suddenly remembered the colossus. Today’s events had wiped it from his mind.
“Come back to base. The general is still here” said Anthony. He felt, with some embarrassment, a bit like a schoolchild about to pull a prank. Omar sounded his acknowledgment and, a few moments later, met Anthony at the teleportation pad.
“You should be in bed” he said upon seeing his leader.
Anthony waved him off, ignoring his soreness. “Would you want to stay in a military ward?”
Omar had to agree with that. Such a facility as this one, with its origin and secrecy, seemed to make the idea even less palatable.

Blane was intrigued at their request.
“Visions, you say” he repeated thoughtfully. “That is interesting.”
“We would like to go down tonight sir, if possible” said Anthony. Omar gave him a gracious look.
“Alright, Lieutenant” said Blane quickly. “And I shall join you.”
They had expected a bit more resistance. “Thank you General” said Omar.

They rode a small elevator down into the base’s deepest levels. It was like descending into the darkest depths of the ocean, where no sunlight penetrated and only the small, dim bulbs of strange creatures illuminated the void. They went down a corridor lit by two streams of smoky green lights, passing by other strange machines and devices not of this world, until they reached the vast hangar where Mothman was kept. The grand colossus stood like a statue from Antiquity. Its angel wings wrapped around the body like a cloak, giving it a bit of a superhero look.

“Well, what now?” asked Blane.
Omar pointed to scaffolds against the legs and led them up to the top. They stood there for a while before Anthony boldly reached out and touched the metal leg. A flood of images poured into his mind. He saw the planet Mars covered with water and marked with an advanced civilization.

He saw a set of glistening pyramids and to the east of them a giant face. Then he saw a cloud of ships descend upon the planet and wipe out the civilization in a series of explosions and generated storms.

The ruins were smothered in blankets of red sand. The face now bore a mummified look as testament to the destruction

Anthony released the leg and stepped back, breathing heavily.
“Lieutenant” said Blane, holding him steady. “What happened? What did you see?”
Anthony explained the vision. Blane gave a look that combined vindication with a growing fear.
“You saw Cydonia.”
“Cydonia?” asked Omar.
“It’s a region on Mars that some have said once harbored an alien civilization” explained the general. “Most haven’t paid them heed, but…. if what Mr. Torres saw is true…”
Anthony remembered hearing something about Cydonia in passing. “Do you think this robot came from Cydonia? What does it have to do with the Archons?”
Blane shook his head slowly. “I don’t know.”
He was tempted for a moment to touch the robot himself, but made no move to do so. Instead he stared up into the lifeless face of the colossus. What was the secret it had to tell?

Emma was slumped on the couch while Sita flipped through the nightly and cable news channels. All of them had something to say about Gold Paiche’s dramatic entrance into world attention. Several nations were preparing for a response to Venezuela’s perceived aggression. The Venezuelan government was making no comment, but one or two of its allies were standing up in its defense. An armed conflict seemed increasingly likely. Maybe that was part of the Archons’ plan.

Sita watched intently, noting every detail. Emma however paid little attention. Her mind was fixed on their poor performance against Gold Paiche…. or rather, her poor performance. Emma wasn’t used to losing; one way or another she had always connived some scheme to get at least some of what she wanted, which didn’t help her popularity with adults back home. But this was far more serious. Too much was at stake to just “stand by” as Blane had ordered. Emma wanted action.
“I’m going to bed” she rose and ambled to her room.
“This early?” Sita asked quizzically.
“I’m tired” Emma shrugged. “And the news is getting boring.”
This was true enough. They were all pretty much parroting each other now. But Sita felt compelled to keep monitoring the world reaction, as though it could somehow help them in the next fight.
“Good night then.”
“Good night.”

Emma lay in bed but did not sleep. She waited until Sita at last turned off the TV and went to bed, then quietly slipped out and entered the teleporter.

Emma entered the command center where a skeleton crew was manning the terminals. She went up to one of the less intimidating ones who was stifling a yawn and drowsily watched an inactive screen.
“Anything up?”
The man jolted up and cleared his throat. “Nothing ma’am. I caught one or two Pods flying about earlier but they vanished soon after.”
He made a futile gesture to hide his exhaustion.
“Get some sleep” said Emma. “You’re relieved.”
“You… you can do that?”
“Why not? You’ll drop off right here if you stay a minute longer. And then what will the general say?”
“This is all on you” he warned as he shuffled off to his quarters. Emma winked and waved him off. She was back in stride. She watched for any sign of Gold Paiche or the Archons.

A little after dawn she finally caught something. Bolivar, Paiche’s obsidian machine, was hovering over a village on an island off the eastern U.S. coast.
“Gotcha”
The others had not caught this, or else they were not indicating such. Emma went to the hangar where the Dashers were, brought hers to the teleporter and entered the coordinates.

Time for a rematch…

Emma teleported to the island on Dash Snake and clad in her Omnium suit. She zoomed in on the scene and watched people being rounded up by men in black and herded to a nearby beach, where a Walker was waiting for them. Surely Blane would not want them to sit still for this. The Australian revved her bike and plunged into the clearing, scattering everyone.
“Get outta here!” she yelled to the villagers. Most happened to know English and made a run for it, followed by the rest. Emma held the men in black at bay with shots from her G-Pistol. Unsurprisingly they turned out to be Nymphae, as the shots blasted off their human disguises. The Pods began floating after the civilians.

She fired lasers from Dash Snake before they could recover and drove them back toward the Walker. Gold Paiche then descended from Bolivar and stood in the sand before Emma.
“You love drawing attention to yourself, don’t you?” she called to him.
Paiche drew his gun, the G-Blaster, and aimed at the girl’s chest. Emma weaved through the shots and returned fire with her G-Rifle. She then split it back to Pistol and Blade and fought him close-quarter while moving toward the water. Their styles devolved into a thuggish brawl; one taken from her misadventures with a wild crowd, the other from a life of crime and bare survival.

Emma kept getting beaten into the water but would not fall back.
“That all you got?” she taunted brazenly. She stabbed Paiche and brought him down. But this seemed to energize the Venezuelan even more. He switched the G-Blaster to sword mode and cut her with an energized blade. Bolivar and the Walker then joined in with a joint bombardment. Emma tumbled through the explosions and dove underwater, turning off her CPU and becoming invisible. She snuck up behind Paiche and prepared to ambush him, but a large serpentine fish with gold scales suddenly rushed in and grabbed her with its mouth. It rose up and threw Emma onto the beach where she regained visibility. The fish snaked in the air around Paiche as he climbed back up the beach after the girl.

“What the hell is that?” Emma wondered. The fish was mechanical, but still seemed organic, alive. It dropped into Paiche’s hands and converted to a large cannon. Paiche fired a small missile. Emma was thrown high into the air and slammed back down in the smoking ground. Her helmet was smashed and her suit’s guts spilled out onto the sand. Paiche approached to make the killing move.

* * *

Blane, Anthony and Omar had lost track of time in Mothman’s subterranean hangar. When they at last emerged they saw a buzz of activity in the command center.
“What’s going on?” asked Anthony.
They then witnessed the scene on the island where Emma was dreadfully outmatched and about to be finished off. Blane gave a look of horror mixed with rage.
“Get her outta there!” he yelled.
Anthony and Omar sprinted to Archelon’s hangar. A few moments later they were flying over Emma’s position. Emma looked up with a wide eye through her broken visor at Paiche holding his gun to her head. Not about to take it lying down, she tore off her belt buckle, switched on the detonator and threw it at him. Paiche quickly shot it before it could hit him, triggering an explosion that threw them both apart several yards.

Archelon fired on the Walker and Bolivar and gathered up the unconscious Emma before beating a hasty retreat. Paiche brought himself to a kneeling position and watched them escape…

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Emma awoke in the medical ward, bandaged up even more than Anthony had been. She found Blane sitting next to her bed. He looked at her with “stern sympathy”, or so she imagined it as. Her body ached all over, but it paled compared to the general’s intimidation.
“General” she greeted with as much dignity as she could muster.
“Two of my people shot up by the same man. At this rate I’ll be out of a team” Blane replied.
Emma forced herself to a more upright position on the bed. Blane continued to watch her.
“Well? You’ve been out cold for one day. I’m sure that’s enough rest. Explain yourself Ms. Harris.”

Emma decided to not back down from Blane’s anger. She returned his gaze. “I believe my response speaks for itself, sir.”
“I thought my orders were clear” the old man spat. “You were not to engage Gold Paiche until we learned exactly what we’re dealing with.”
“With all due respect sir, I don’t think those people could afford to wait on you.”
“And what do you suppose will happen to them? Do you think you’re a hero today? The Archons will just find another target, and with Paiche on their side and with us as we are….” he cut himself off and stood up.
“I thought you would have learned your lesson the last time you pulled a stunt like this.”
“Well give me credit for being selfless this time.”
“Oh don’t give that. In fact stop this sassy act of yours altogether. It doesn’t fly in the military, and most certainly not with me.” Blane looked ready to explode. He continued his rant.
“Selfless… who are you kidding? You just wanted to get even with that man for beating you. This is just more of your… delinquency you took with you from home. Always doing your own thing, not giving a damn about what’s expected of you. No one can trust you with anything… but disappointment.”

Emma hadn’t expected to be cut by such a remark. Blane’s delivery had a punch that no one else, not even her parents, had quite managed to give. She hid the hurt from her face, though she doubted the general would go easy now.
“I’m sorry” she whispered.
“I’ve reviewed our situation with the Omnitech members. We’ve agreed that your services are no longer required.”
“… What?”
“You’re relieved of duty. Ms. Harris. You’re no longer Blue Snake. I’ve found a replacement for you, short notice as it is.”
“You’re throwing me out?” Emma had not expected this, especially in so blunt a manner and with her still in a hospital bed. “What… What’ll happen to me?”
“That is up to you, child. You can return home whenever you are ready.”

The smallest hint of pity leaked through Blane’s eyes, but it was kind of pity one has for a wayward child that is seen once and forgotten about later. He left Emma alone in the room to digest this sudden news.

“He threw Emma off the Team?” Sita asked when Anthony gave the news.
“Yes. Without asking me I might add...” Anthony drifted off.

“Good riddance” said Omar. “She’s done nothing but get in trouble since we got here.”
“Omar - ” Anthony tried to chide, but he went on.
“You want to defend her?” She’s an undisciplined, spoiled brat. Sita knows it. You all know it. Why shouldn’t I say so?”
“You could still show some more tact” objected Sita.
“She’s not here” Omar shrugged. “Like she’d care what we think anyway.”
“Oh shut up will you?” Nikolas sneered. “You’re such a pretentious blowhard, you know that?”
“You’re taking her side” Omar accused. “I figured as much.”
“At least she has a sense of humor. You and Sita are two old curmudgeons - ”
“Excuse me?” asked Sita.
“Forget it” said Omar. “He doesn’t appreciate our ‘Eastern’ sensibilities.”
“No, I just don’t appreciate you” said Nikolas.
“Better start. Your Germany only survives by our presence.”
“Yes… all you need now is the flag of the new Reich.”

Omar grabbed Nikolas by the lapel. Nikolas made ready to throw a punch.
“Enough!” said Anthony. “Get off, both of you!”
Sita pried the two men away.
“Well, what say you?” asked Omar to Anthony.
“Yes, you want to just abandon your teammate like these two?” demanded Nikolas.
“She compromised our security for a brash stunt once” said Sita “and now she defies orders. She’s become a liability. It’s time to cut her loose.”
“If you won’t say anything I will” said Nikolas.
“You will do nothing” said Anthony firmly and loudly. “This is my team, and I make the decisions.”
“… Of course. You’re right” Sita consented. She threw admonishing looks at Nikolas and Omar.
“Now I don’t want any more talk about Emma. I’ll see the general if I think I should. Got it?”
He hoped his tone carried enough authority. But even now he had to see things from Nikolas’s viewpoint. He, Anthony, should at least have had some say in the matter. Omar and Nikolas cast derisive glances at each other and left in opposite directions. Sita sighed and followed in Omar’s direction. Anthony stood alone and mulled over what he wanted to do…

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Later Blane summoned the four of them to the meeting room. Anthony, Sita and Omar came on time; Nikolas ran in a few seconds after, appearing distracted. Blane looked at him but said nothing about his tardiness. Nor did he mention Emma’s absence.
“Our alien friends have been busy” he told them as he played images of Pods flying over zoos and wild areas abducting various large animals. These led into a live feed of a city street where a mechanical panther was wreaking havoc.
“What is that?” asked Omar.
“We’ve dubbed it a MechaBeast” said Blane. “Specifically, MechaFelis. I have a suspicion what it is, but once you get down there you can get a better picture.”
“Sir, what about - ”
“Move out, Team.”

“Not they, I don’t think” said Blane after a pause. His suspicion was confirmed. “This must be Pinkhasov’s solo creation.”
“One of those, eh?” muttered Nikolas.
“Working with the Archons would let him redo old experiments.”
“VULCANS ready” commanded Anthony. They opened fire on MechaFelis as it leapt at them. They fought with gun, blade and bare hands. It threw them all off and continued on its rampage down the streets. People scrambled to and fro from the menace. The heroes were thrown all around.

“VULCANS ready” commanded Anthony. They opened fire on MechaFelid as it leapt at them. They fought with gun, blade and bare hands. It threw them all off and continued on its rampage down the streets. People scrambled to and fro from the menace. The heroes were thrown all around. Between Gold Paiche and this new creation, Team GAIEA minus one was fighting a losing battle.

“This thing is invincible” Nikolas opined as they continued to be beaten back.
“Just keep it at bay for now” instructed Blane. “We’ll try capturing it.”
“I don’t think that’s an option, sir” Anthony radioed back. He shot his VULCAN in Laser Mode at MechaFelid and was knocked over some rubble for his trouble. “I have an idea. Keep him there!”
“What are you doing?” called Omar. A few moments later Jet Soarer was swooping down over the street toward the MechaBeast.
“Take cover!” ordered Anthony. His teammates dove for safety. Anthony flew as low as he dared and unleashed a flurry of laser fire. MechaFelid and the ground around it were blown apart on impact.

Jet Soarer hovered back up and was still. Gazelle, Wolf and Tiger examined the creature’s remains. Just barely a victory. The war against the aliens had intensified…

Team GAIEA returned with the MechaBeast’s remains. As soon as a team came to take them away Blane lead them to the meeting room, where the two Japanese were waiting.
“This is General Tetsuzan Ito of the JDF” Ito gave a curt nod, “And this is Lieutenant Amane Ueda, your new Blue Snake.”
The Team looked at each other and back at Amane. She appeared around Sita’s age.
“Pleased to meet you” she said with conscious deference, aware of the circumstances around her arrival. Nikolas turned away dismissively, his objections still plain. Sita looked her over and seemed to approve.

Anthony was better at masking his feelings; he gave an inviting smile toward the new teammate.
“Welcome aboard.”
He then moved over to Blane. “May I speak to you in private, sir?”
Blane looked at him curiously and then nodded. “The general will be observing our operations for the time being. Our teams will start examining the MechaBeast remains and once that is done we can decide our next move. Dismissed. Mr. Torres, General, come with me.”

The informality of all this was little appreciated. Nikolas disappeared without another look at Amane. Omar nodded politely to her and went the other way. Amane was left alone with Sita.
“I’m sorry about all this” said Sita. “But I’m sure you can appreciate our situation.”
“I do. I’ve already been briefed” Amane relaxed her pose a bit. “I don’t want to disrupt your team dynamic. So just tell me what to do and I’ll follow.”
“I’m sure you’ll do just fine.”
The two girls smiled again, now a bit more warmly. From this initial impression, Sita already saw a difference between Amane and Emma. She liked her already…

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ilya Pinkhasov had regained the Archons’ attention with his MechaBeast, just as he had wanted. Over the past few days he had sent out Pods to abduct various large animals from zoos or the wild. Once captive he had begun using the Archon technology used to make human drones on these. The effect was considerably different; whereas human drones were more subservient, these animal drones were rabid killing machines, barely controllable. The Imatos replayed MechaFelid’s battle with Team GAIEA that had only ended after Red Eagle had brought out his mecha. A splendid performance for sure.
“*** ***** ** ****** * ** *!” one of the Imatos remarked to the Russian, which he interpreted as praise. He cast a look at Gold Paiche who was sitting in a dark corner giving maintenance to his gun. The Venezuelan was out of his costume but made sure the dim light hit his face as little as possible. What Pinkhasov could see was a face cut by some harsh, barren existence. He seemed as animal as the MechaBeasts he had created, just as wild and just as unfeeling.

Suddenly the Archons received a kind of neural message coming from a central source. Pinkhasov watched them and took mental notes. For this moment the aliens were like mere cells receiving instruction from the brain through a mass network of nerves.
“* **** *** **” one then said to him.
“… I don’t understand.”
The Imato then spoke in Earth tongue. “The Monarch wishes to see you.”
Gold Paiche turned his head sharply and inadvertently revealed most of his face. Pinkhasov smirked to himself and noted this fear, though he himself felt apprehension. He had not been sure there even was a Monarch, or some central authority of the Archons. Everything they did was as one, like one singular mind spread across countless bodies. But this seemed to make a bit more sense, as he had noted the aliens did at times possess some limited autonomy, though even then comparable to organs acting without the mind’s conscious action.
“Lead on then” he waved to the aliens. “We shouldn’t keep royalty waiting.”

Paiche watched them disappear, and then vanished himself.

The group was transported to a large vessel positioned beyond the dark side of the Moon. As he was escorted Pinkhasov could see, to his amazement, the dim outlines of the ruins of ancient alien constructions hidden from Man’s view. The Archons brought him further and further into the center of the ship. Larva and Nymphae passed them by above, below and on their level, with minimal acknowledgement.

Finally they arrived at a vast spherical chamber with high ceiling and seemingly bottomless chasm. At the center of this was a smaller closed sphere suspended in mid-air and connected to a series of walkways.

sinisterplansbychriscol.jpg

Pinkhasov was led down one such walkway to the sphere and stood next to a pair of sealed doors.
“****** ****** ******!”
The sphere opened part-way. Pinkhasov was frozen in awe at what he saw.

ideabydermonkeyd308qtk.jpg

The Archon Monarch was embedded in a complex of machinery. Lights and screens depicting scenes from Earth and throughout space surrounded his (Pinkhasov assumed it as a ‘he’) head. Every few seconds electric bolts passed from him throughout the ship and to every Archon in Earth’s vicinity. He seemed immobile in his structure, completely one with this wondrous machine. But from here he controlled the entirety of his race. He was their brain, their mind, their (if they even had one) soul. The Monarch now turned only his eyes to the human that had been brought to him.
“*** *** **?”
“****.”
The Monarch now addressed Pinkhasov in human tongue. “You are Ilya Pinkhasov.”
“Yes…” Pinkhasov wasn’t sure how to address him. “Your Highness?”
“You made the MechaBeast” It wasn’t a question, rather a statement.
“… Yes.”
Pinkhasov expected more, to hear some praise for the work he had done for them up until now. But the Monarch simply looked at him and said no more. His stare became uncomfortable. Pinkhasov turned his eyes down. At last the Monarch spoke again.
“Build another one.”
Pinkhasov looked up. He dared to be slightly offended at all this coolness.
“…. Yes. I shall get on it at once.”

The Monarch gave him one final stare and then closed the sphere again. Pinkhasov turned away feeling quite riled. Is that all the Archon leader wanted from him? A private audience just to bark a command? He didn’t bother masking his discontent as he departed the chamber with his escort.

Within his enclosure the Monarch returned to his many monitors. He had been ceaselessly searching for the Heart of the old Mothership, both himself and through his brethren. Now the search was over. But with military activity going on at its location, going down to retrieve it would be difficult, and wasteful of resources. But they knew another way they could wrest it from the pitiful humans…

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The original team created by the Omnitech Project was code-named “Victorious GAIEA”, for the six member countries from each of the six inhabited continents. With Venezuela’s treason the team was reduced to “GAIEA”, but Gold Paiche remained. His name: Hector Oriengo.

His childhood was nonexistent. From a young age he had been turned out into the world alone. His family was gone; massacred by drug gangs, executed or split up by the dictatorship, or some random senseless murder, no one could be sure. Whatever it was, the young boy had to fend for himself. He ran away from orphanages and wandered the country begging and scrounging. When charity was out of sight, he became feral. He watched the animals and, occasionally, people hiding from civilization, kill for food or kill for its own sake, and learned to do the same. At first it was horrible and he balked at the gore, but then survival kicked in and all qualms were discarded. First animals and later humans. Killing and thieving became easier and easier, almost instinctual.

As this life continued the boy became a man, and he spoke less and less. People wondered if he was mute. Gangs would pick him up and he would travel with them for a time, only to leave or be discarded again. He would be caught by the authorities and turned loose or escape later. Eventually he was captured in a firefight between a cartel and a military force, and by now his reputation preceded him. Rather than be imprisoned again, he was conscripted into a special strike force. There his skills were fine-tuned for the state’s purpose. The other soldiers rarely spoke to him, which was just as well since he barely said a word anyway.

All this went on without Hector giving much notice. It didn’t matter where or what he was. As long as he could fight, could survive, could garner some pleasure from beating his opponents, nothing else really mattered. The long years had conditioned him irreversibly.

So now here he was, a weapon of the Archons, the chosen Venezuelan super soldier.

Hector took Bolivar out and flew clandestinely over the blue planet. With him the aliens would overtake the world. And then…. What then? Would they become overlords? Or would they just destroy it? Hector pondered this as he flew.

And then he concluded… what did it matter? He would decide what to do when the time came. Until then, enjoy this new, godlike power. Enjoy having the team of heroes fall before him. That was all he wanted anyway. Hector wondered how he would fight them next time: all together or hunt them down one by one like a stalking predator. The latter seemed more entertaining.

Suddenly a large shape blocked out the light. He was flying beneath a large battleship that looked like a behemoth descended from the stars.

He piloted his craft to a position above the vessel, where a pad was lit up waiting for him. He landed and was brought inside. Nymphae in human guise, along with Venezuelan military officials, escorted him to the bridge. A crew of Larva were manning controls. A blue-green glow came from the consoles, floor and walls. An empty captain’s chair surrounded by controls was placed in the center.
“You have been given command of this ship” one of the Venezuelans informed him in Spanish. “Our joint forces were able to scrounge enough wreckage from the old Mothership to construct this. When the order is given, we shall start a siege on the whole planet. Team GAIEA will be overwhelmed.
“We shall see” said Hector, his voice devoid of surprise or excitement, concealing well his true feelings. With the others watching him, he took his seat.
“What’s its name?” he asked.
“We do not name our works” said one Nympha. “But if you wish you can decide on a name.”
“Hmm” Hector mulled for a moment. He imagined the coming assault on Earth by the resurrected alien menace. A name then came to him.
“Relampago.” Blitzkrieg…

Anthony stood before Blane, with Ito to the side.
“Sir, I protest replacing Emma like this. I’m the team leader, I should have a say in what happens to it.”
“Ms. Ueda is perfectly capable for the job” replied Blane. “And as leader, you should know when one of your members has become a liability.”
“Even so, it was my decision. And you took it from me… sir.”
The two generals looked to each other. Anthony anticipated a sharp rebuttal, but Blane surprised him yet again with a faint smile of satisfaction.
“I’m very glad to see you growing into your role. I knew you had the knack for it, even if you didn’t.”
“I’m just doing what you told me to do.”
“I suppose I might have been too rash in my decision” Blane admitted. “But it’s already been discussed and we can’t backtrack now.” He shook his head in sad realization. “Maybe I’ve become too much the micromanager myself.”
“I don’t deny Emma’s rashness” Anthony added quickly. “But I would have disciplined her myself. With all due respect, we on the field can have a different view of things than those at HQ.”
“You are absolutely right. And I’m sure you would have” Blane said kindly. “In the future I’ll trust you more.”
“Thank you sir.”

Ito looked at the young pilot with a new respect. “You made a good choice with this one, Malcom” he complimented. Ever modest, Anthony turned down.
“But given the most recent developments” Ito continued, “I hope you can appreciate his feelings. I’m not just here to escort Ms. Ueda, but to give a report.”
“Report on what?” asked Anthony. “Has something happened?”
“Something is about to happen. Something terrible” explained Blane. “I would have briefed you all sooner had that MechaBeast not shown up. But since you are here already, I’ll let you sit in. And then you, as leader, can brief your team.”
“Me?”
“You’ve convinced me to ease on the reigns a bit. This is your team, and you have some more control over it.”

Anthony tensed up inside. His doubts about his ability crept up once more. He thought wildly for a moment if Blane was secretly getting back at him for objecting to Blue Snake’s replacement. Ito then resumed speaking and he turned his attention back.
“A few days ago our navy discovered these ruins at the very bottom of the Pacific Ocean.”

He presented a blown up photograph taken by a deep sea submarine. Through the murky gloom was the wreckage from an extraterrestrial craft. From its appearance it seemed to have been torn out of the whole.

rotfnemesisconceptcrash.jpg

“Another piece of the Mothership?” asked Anthony.
“Not just any piece” Ito revealed another photo. “This was the last image the submarine took before it was shut down… presumably by that.”
It was a large sphere with an electric blueish glow. An energy bolt was zapping toward the camera.

1348452417418.jpg

“Is this…?” started Anthony.
“Yes. This is the Mothership Heart” said Blane. “At last we’ve found it.”
“Then we should go retrieve it before the Archons do.”
“It’s not that simple. After we lost contact with the sub we detected a barrier set around the ruin. We’ve been using our own confiscated Archon tech to try to shut it down, but it will take time.”
“And we won’t have much time when the Archons discover it” said Blane gravely. “Which they certainly will if not already.”
“So what do we do?” asked Anthony.
“We watch and wait. I’ve placed all Prometheus staff on red alert. If the Archons decide to make a direct attack we’ll be well defended and can make a counterstrike. In the meantime we must find out what makes these MechaBeasts tick. I suspect Pinkhasov will release another one soon to divert our attention. Team GAIEA is going to be stretched pretty thin before this is over.
“Do you expect a full-scale war?” asked Ito. “All nations against these aliens?”
“Not all nations. It’ll be us against Venezuela and its allies, all backed by their new Archon allies. Or even worse, our current conflicts will escalate when Archon technology is brought out by one or both sides. I can name several that come to mind who would leap at the chance to use it.”

Blane sighed heavily. Anthony examined the photos once more. Global war seemed imminent, and the only force that could stop it was his own. But right now the Team itself lacked unity. Like many leaders of old, he would have to rally them into a united front. But could he do it? Deep down, the young pilot did not think so.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sita had given Amane a quick tour of Prometheus Base, and then exited into the city the Team resided in. She learned that Amane had martial arts training like her, particularly that of the Sohei warrior monks. She had been stationed at the Japanese embassy in Australia and was scheduled to return home when General Ito had given her this new command.
“I was going to attend my older sister’s wedding” Amane explained as they entered the Team’s apartment building. “She said they would upload a video and send it to me.”
“That’s nice.”
“Yes… but I was rather looking forward to it” Amane sighed wistfully.

Her luggage had been set outside the girls’ apartment. Once they got inside Amane took out a small laptop and found a video link in her e-mail. Together they watched the brief video of Amane’s sister and her new husband, clad in wedding kimonos, at a shrine performing the ceremony with a mid-sized party in attendance. Watching this triggered an uncomfortable reminder for Sita. Amane noticed her somewhat saddened look.
“What’s wrong?”
“Oh, nothing” Sita quickly shook her head. “That was very nice.”

Amane looked at Sita curiously but didn’t press her further. She started typing a reply as Sita offered her a beverage, when Emma entered the apartment.
“Emma!” Sita announced in surprise.
“Um… hi” Emma looked at her replacement sitting on the couch. Amane quickly rose deferentially.
“Are you Ms. Harris?”
“I am.”
“Pleased to meet you” Amane smiled, conscious of the situation. Emma flashed a polite smile and returned to her somber expression. “I’m sorry about your injury. I’ll try my best in your place.”
“I’m sure you’ll do much better” Emma replied.

She thought bitterly that either this girl didn’t know the whole story or she was being patronizing. Amane thought it a compliment and nodded her thanks, but Sita picked up on Emma’s intent: the disciplined, capable Amane would meet her approval much more readily than Emma the delinquent.
“I expect you will want my room” said Emma to Amane. “I’ll start packing my stuff”
“Oh, please don’t rush for me. Take as much time as you need” Amane responded.
“It’s no problem, I don’t have that much anyway. I just wonder what I’ll do now. I don’t feel like going home just yet…”
“But–”
“Emma” Sita interrupted. “Let’s talk.”
“What’s to talk about?” Emma said a bit loudly. “I’m fired. And now you have the perfect partner, and the pro Blane actually wanted. Good little Eastern girl in pretty dresses, doesn’t run wild and will find a nice husband. Who wants trash like me, right?” She turned to Amane and added “Nothing personal.”
“Oh Emma” Sita sighed. Amane looked from one to the other saying nothing.

A call from Anthony on the ComPads then broke the tension. Emma saw Amane quickly strap on what was her ComBrace and listened in.
“Go ahead” prompted Sita.
Anthony briefed his teammates on what Blane and Ito had divulged, sending them holograms of the photos he had seen.
“Things are looking grim. I want everyone to be on their guard. The Archons will probably try to distract us while they go after the Heart.”
“And speak of the devil, they have” said Emma suddenly.
“Who’s that? Emma?” asked Anthony excitedly. “What’s going on?”
Emma had seen the homepage on Amane’s browser light up with breaking news.
“There’s a MechaBeast running loose. A big lizard one, from the look of it.”
“What?”
“She’s right” radioed Nikolas. “I see it on the TV from here.”
Anthony raced to confirm this from Promethus. “Damn”
“What are our orders?” asked Amane in a formal voice.
“Move out and rendezvous.”
“Roger.”

Amane closed her laptop. Emma out of habit made a move to follow them but stopped herself before they made comment. Still, she felt the urge to do something. Suddenly her mind drifted to Mothman standing dormant within Prometheus. She thought she could recall vaguely hearing while hospitalized Anthony and Omar talking about going down to see the ancient robot and seeing visions. If she went down and touched him, would she have such an experience? Maybe there was still some way she could be of use after all. But why bother trying to please these people, she reminded herself. They had cut her off and that was that. But even so…

Emma made up her mind. She left the apartment and went down to the teleporter…

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Team GAIEA arrived on scene. This MechaBeast had been made from an enlarged Komodo dragon. MechaVaranid.

carnelodon.jpg

The monster and several Larva had ducked into a warehouse and the heroes followed.
“Suits on!” commanded Anthony. Amane stood a bit forward from the others, ready to demonstrate her ability.
“Build Up!”
The others followed cue. Amane allowed herself a moment of wonder as the spandex-like suit of alien metal beamed down from the U.F.O. now concealed her body. They fought through the grunts. MechaVaranid repeatedly leapt high and rain down lasers, landed and slashed and clubbed the heroes, and then leapt high again. Amane soon realized the pattern.
“Its armor is too thick” said Nikolas. “We need a way to break through.”
“We can’t get close enough to cut him” observed Sita
Amane then noticed a long thin pole nearby and examined her G-Blade.
“I have an idea”

(‘Sekai Ninja no Chousen’ from Sekai Ninja Sen Jiraiya)

She ducked under MechaVaranid’s swiping tail and dove for the pole. She took her G-Blade, charged it and inserted the handle through one end, making a makeshift naginata. She dove under MechaVaranid as it leapt above her again and used her weapon to pierce the monster’s chest. The blade slid down the torso as MechaVaranid passed over her and tumbled to the floor. Amane twirled the naginata and held it before her.
“Good job, Snake!” commended an elated Anthony.
Amane now advanced, deftly wielding her naginata against MechaVaranid’s brutish lunges, getting cuts and stabs in as the beast left itself open. She even managed to slice off its tail and shoot it dead as it flopped about and tried to grab her.

The others advanced again and now shot their G-Pistols with effectiveness. MechaVaranid began to back down.
“Set G-Rifles!” commanded Anthony. “Fire!”
MechaVaranid shot its lasers again. Both sides retreated. The beast however had taken further damage. Anthony summoned Archelon.
“VULCANs ready!”
They took their VULCANs and aimed.
“Fire!”
Five revolving turrets spat artillery at MechaVaranid until it exploded. They hurried over and inspected the wreckage.
“Nice improvising, Snake” Omar complimented.
“Thank you” Amane grinned beneath her helmet, glad to have made a good first impression. Sita gave her a thumb up.
“A bit too easy though, wasn’t it?” asked Nikolas. “We needed a mech to blow up MechaFelid.”
“Felid was faster ” theorized Anthony. “This one had strength but less agility. Getting through the armoring was the trick.”
“You said they wanted to distract us” said Sita. “They might be making their move now. Radio the base.”
Before they could do that, another commotion caught their attention. They ran out of the warehouse and saw some distance away a massive ship flying through the darkening sky. It was Relampago.

“What the hell is that?” asked Anthony.
“General” radioed Amane to base. “We have a problem.”
“I see it” said Blane, watching the scene from monitor. This hadn’t quite been the move he had anticipated. “It must be another Progeny.”
“Progeny 3 then” muttered Nikolas. He prodded Amane. “You’re getting a crash course in everything today. To Silverado!”
“Right” said Anthony. U.F.O. decloaked and descended, releasing the Argentum Fleet. Once Silverado was formed it flew toward and over Relampago. It was twice the size of the robot.
“It’s not doing anything” said Sita as they passed. Inside Relampago Hector and his Archon crew watched and waited for the enemy to move first.
“Let’s get its attention then” said Nikolas. He summoned Vesuvius Cannon from U.F.O.
Vesuvius Cannon!” called Silverado’s voice. It aimed and fired at the underside. The ship buckled from the blow and descended closer to the buildings. It then began turning around.

“That did it. Fire again” ordered Anthony. But inside Relampago Hector was ready.
“Return fire.”
A deluge of energy fire was hurled at Silverado. It was blown out of the sky and crashed to the ground. Relampago continued shooting as the robot got back up and threw cannon volleys. But Hector did not intend to focus his attack on Silverado alone.
“Begin the siege” he softly commanded.
The alien vessel released an array of rotating lasers and made a 360o attack on the city. Architecture within the wide radius was blown apart with devastating ease. Even civilian aircraft unfortunate enough to pass nearby became collateral damage.
“Evade, evade!” yelled Anthony. Silverado moved around and shot the Cannon again and again, but Relampago did not cease. It drifted above the city, Silverado fast behind.
Yangtze Saber!” Silverado slashed through Relampago. A gun sent it back.
Barrier Shield!” Silverado defended against the continued barrage.
Sahara Magnum!” It shot the gun where it had made the cut and managed to inflict some damage. The revolving gunfire ceased.
“Now!” said Omar. “Use the Cannon again before they recover!”
But before they could Relampago changed shape and exposed a gigantic orb loaded with energy. This energy was unleashed as a thick columnar beam. Even the Shield could not protect the robot; explosions ripped through Silverado. It tumbled down in a sea of sparks. Team GAIEA held on for dear life.

Walkers and Pods were now flying to all parts of the world. An alert informed Prometheus Base that Walkers were flying over to the spot where the Heart had been found. Dead silence fell over the staff. General Ito was pale. General Blane stared frantically at the fallen Silverado, praying it would stand up again…

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Emma arrived at the deepest level of the Base, went past the strange alien paraphernalia, and took in the robot colossus that was Mothman. She climbed the scaffolds all the way to the top where she stood right before the face. The lifeless eyes peered at her. Emma hesitated, unsure how to proceed. She teetered on the edge of her platform and stretched a hand to Mothman’s face.

It was cold to the touch. For a moment nothing happened. Then suddenly the eyes glowed bright. Emma was consumed in a white light. She stared into those eyes and saw the vast universe all at once. Countless worlds zoomed past her. Faces of nameless extraterrestrials, many long since extinct, faded in and out. Finally she saw an ancient lunar base under Archon control, and then destroyed by a great cataclysm as a battle over Earth was waged between Mothman and the Archon Mothership.

Emma tried to pull away but a force kept her in place. The scaffold began to buckle as Mothman at long last began to revive. A voice then echoed in her ears.
You are the blue serpent.
“I… what?”
You are the blue serpent. The friend of the white gazelle and the red eagle.
“What are…. who are you?”
I am that was sent by the One who created me. And I have a message of doom for your world.
The scaffold collapsed. Emma shrieked as she began to fall, but the colossus caught her in his hand and placed her inside his chest.
Come with me!
The chamber shook as Mothman took off. Emma could only brace herself on the wall and look on…

This is a message for Earth” now announced the voice of an Archon Imato. “We are the Archons. We have existed and thrived for millennia and millennia, before you were even thought to be created. What you see here is a taste of what we are capable of. You will be wiped from existence, unless you retrieve for us the Heart of our Mothership. Your governments know what this is. Demand its surrender or we shall act on our threat. Do not attempt to fight us. We have made allegiances with various nation states and they will declare war on you should you attempt to resist. Your fate is in your hands, citizens of the world. Demand wisdom from your leaders and there will be a place for you in the new Order. Until you decide, this planet is under siege.

“So this was their plan” groaned Amane.
“Come on, back on our feet!” encouraged Anthony. “Before the time runs out let’s try to do something!”
Silverado returned to its feet and charged with its sword through a hail of gunfire. But it could not get close enough to the ship to do much damage, and was thrown away again by the artillery.

Spheres of energy were now dropped like bombs over the city. Silverado responded by combining all five of its weapons into the Gaia Mortar: Yangtze Saber was placed on top of Vesuvius Launcher, and Sahara Magnum attached to the bottom. This was then joined with Barrier Shield and set like a walled mortar. Yucatan Mace was placed inside the barrel. Silverado ducked behind the shield from the spheres and then, as Relampago passed close enough, fired the fully-charged spiked ball into the underside. It lodged there and detonated a moment later, creating a large rupture and sending it off course.

Silverado now fired shells after Relampago, but an energy shield formed over it and harmlessly bounced off the explosions. The robot at last resorted to forming a mass of energy in the blue dome on its chest and releasing it through an extended turret. Relampago’s shield not only blocked the energy, but let it flow all around until the vessel looked as though surrounded by a sphere of rippling water.
“One minute!” Sita bemoaned.
This attack was draining their power. The energy soon petered out. Hector ordered shields to deactivate. The collected energy was dispersed in a large wave, tearing buildings in two and causing Silverado yet more damage. In a gush of sparks it split back into its three Argentum Fleet mechas, and Team GAIEA landed ungracefully to the surface as they bailed out.

“They’re defeated!” one of the Venezuelan observers celebrated, but his elation changed when he saw Hector leave his chair. “Where are you going?”
“The fight is not over!”
Before he could be stopped the golden killer dropped down and began to fight Team GAIEA hand-to-hand. The air battle, while in his favor, simply wasn’t interesting. He needed to see his opponents up close, to strike them with his own blows without a machine between them. The exhausted heroes could not match him.

The Argentum Fleet continued to fight individually via autopilot with reinforcement from U.F.O. Back at the Base Blane watched this with growing worry. He balled his fist and grit his teeth in frustration. Only a miracle could save them now…

Hector continued to trounce the heroes. Amane’s pride at disarming MechaVaranid now vanished as she was slashed and thrown over a pile of rubble. Omar, Nikolas and Sita triple-teamed him with a combination G-Rifle – VULCAN Laser attack, making him drop his G-Blaster and roll away. Anthony leapt in and slashed him with a charged G-Blade. Hector quickly blocked the next strike and gut-punched the American, then threw him back in the path of his weapon, retrieved it and shot him back.
“Pirarucu!”
The large golden fish knocked aside the heroes, swam through the air above him and dropped into his hands, becoming a cannon. He blasted Team GAIEA several times, sending them flying all over.

“It’s the end of the world!” he declared to them in Spanish. “Just watch as it burns away.”
Anthony wasn’t about to watch the world burn. He stumbled back toward Hector and thrust his sword toward him. The two briefly dueled and knocked helmets while shoving their blades together. Hector used his visor camera to zoom through Anthony’s visor and took a glimpse of his face. A Cuban. This piqued his interest. Anthony then jumped back, charged his weapon again and stabbed Hector in his exposed shoulder while he was attempting to swing down. Hector cried out and fell back. Meanwhile the Argentum Fleet lay wrecked on the streets from the enemy’s merciless assault.

A rumbling suddenly came from the distance. Mothman glided to the scene on its splendid, angelic wings. But instead of comfort, its presence cast a shadow of fear for all who dared to look up.
“What is that?” gasped Amane.
“It’s Mothman” answered Nikolas. “He’s awoken!”
A giant scepter appeared in his hands. With it he fired a great bolt of energy at Relampago that pierced through the bridge and zapped the Archon crew, killing the Larvae and incapacitating the Nymphae. A set of cannons on his body next emerged and bombarded the ship. It backed down and began a regeneration process.

Mothman landed and folded his wings. He scanned the devastated city and the scatterings of civilians here and there. He expanded his gaze to the rest of the world and witnessed it all at once, and saw the alien menace laying siege on this small blue planet. Inside him Emma waited for the next move. She then found an exit from her chamber and emerged out onto the robot’s shoulder.
“There’s someone up there…” observed Omar. “It’s Emma!”
“What?!”
“Emma!” called Sita. “What’s going on??”
Mothman now turned to the five soldiers on the ground, specifically on Hector.
“Get back you guys!” Emma warned. Mothman sent a beam that lifted Hector off the ground and sent him back to his vessel, where he tumbled onto the deck. Next he beamed the Argentum Fleet into U.F.O. for repairs. Lastly he began to speak to everyone on the planet, his words heard in their native languages.

People of Earth! I am the messenger Skygel. The One who sent me gave these words to bear: you have become a most vile, corrupted species. You were warned in ancient times never to touch the remains of the Archons, but in your pride and avarice you made to plunder their technology and released them back into the universe. This sin only compounds upon the multitude of crimes you as a species has committed on each other throughout your existence. Therefore the One who sent me has decided you no longer deserve the gift of Life. I proclaim to you now that in three days’ time this planet and the universe will be destroyed! You and the Archons will once and for all be extinguished and all will be made anew. As most of you will likely not believe me, take a look for yourselves.

Skygel conjured an image in the sky across the world showing what was coming. A gigantic swirling mass was steadily approaching Earth with the intent to devour and “digest” it into nothingness.

spacepowertunnel1600x90.jpg

You have three days. Think upon your crimes and lament. The innocent dead shall find their peace.
Needless to say, this was not what the heroes wanted to hear. They stood dumbstruck. Omar in particular leaned against a piece of rubble and turned his eyes down, fearful of staring at the colossus directly. The dim cries of shock and panic from the people wafted to their ears.
“Oh God…” Emma whispered not so characteristically. She thought she could feel the approaching vortex in the wind from her position. Skygel took Emma into his palm and lifted the other five up with her.
Come.” He took off once more and disappeared with them. They disappeared from detection on Prometheus Base’s monitors. Blane and Ito looked at each other with growing fright, yet also a growing awe…

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The six soldiers saw the world disappear from view. Darkness encompassed their vision for a moment, and then they each beheld a particular landscape with a blinding white light hanging in the sky.

Anthony found himself on a tropical island, Omar and Emma in a desert, Nikolas in a forest, Sita in the middle of a large river, and Amane on a snowy mountain. All were without costume. They called for each other and received replies back, yet could not see each other no matter where they looked.
“Where are we??” demanded Amane.
I have taken you from Earth” replied Skygel. His voice came down from the white light. “I would speak with you before this Creation ends.
“This Creation…” mused Sita. “Then there have been other worlds before this?”
The universe has been made and unmade before.
“Are you serious about destroying the world?” asked Nikolas. “You’re really doing it?”
I only repeat the message. The One who sent me has decided humanity does not deserve the gift of Life. But I can save you.
“What do you mean?” asked Emma.
I have observed your war with the Archons and have looked within each of you. You are the righteous in a world of evil. Thus I can deliver you into the next world so that you not suffer the calamity that is coming.

Omar went down on his knees and hid his face from the light. Anthony lowered his face as well and started to genuflect, but felt discomfort at these words. For the first time in a long while he felt at peace… yet was this the limit to this colossus’s mercy? Skygel turned to Omar and addressed him personally.
Do not tremble so, White Gazelle” he said kindly. “Rise. I am not one whom to worship.
Omar slowly turned up at the light but would still not eye it directly. Anthony on the other hand decided to voice his dissent.
“Are we the only ones you want to save? What about General Blane? Everyone who has supported us? Our families? There has to be other people besides us!”
It is you who have risked your lives against the Archons. Their evil is greater than you know, and humanity revived them once again. But you deserve deliverance, which I offer to you.
“Are humans so bad that you must destroy them all?” Anthony implored. If Skygel was what he believed him to be, then he could not believe the One he spoke of would be so cruel. “Must everyone die for what some do?”
The One who sent me has seen many races in many lifetimes across the universe, and can see what is coming. You with such finite scope and great conceit do not know the path you tread.
“Then tell us what you know!” piped in Sita. “What are the Archons and where do they come from?”
“And how are we so horrible?” added Emma.
Behold!” boomed Skygel.

The robot began to stream a series of images in the “sky” for them to see. These were recordings of a race of beings that were almost exactly human. Omar gaped; he had seen glimpses of them in his visions. They populated an urbanized, Earth-like planet in a faraway part of space.

lemuriakumarikandamexpl.jpg

These” said Skygel “are the Archons as they once were.”
Everyone froze in surprise. “I don’t understand” muttered Nikolas.
You are the Archons!” thundered Skygel. “That is the secret I now reveal. The Archons were once like you in every way. They rose up above other species, advanced and created civilizations. As their technology advanced so too did their nation states, and they started becoming one nation, and one world.

aliencivilision.jpg

“That doesn’t seem so bad” said Amane quietly.
Thou dost retain some naiveté in your youth” replied Skygel without malice. “The oneness they sought was literal. Scholars and wisemen prattled about abolishing walls, increasing conformity, and ultimately destroying individualism. Acting for oneself was wicked and corrupt, but acting for the whole was sacred. Thus while the Archons advanced further and further, they lost their individual uniqueness and sought egalitarian purity. They forgot the Higher Power and turned to Mammon. And all who resisted were purged for hindering progress.
“But how did they become what they are now?” asked Emma.
The Archons sought everlasting life, so they incrementally began enhancing their bodies with technological implants so as to prolong their years. So good did they become at this that they began mutilating themselves further, making flesh into machine, connecting minds into networks for artificial telepathy. From birth unto death were they connected to machines and became supermen. They were slaves of their own inventions and had not the wisdom to see it. And all this was deemed good. With connected minds the oneself diminished evermore, they became less and less like what you appear as now, and assumed the grotesque features you see. No more than a hive mind and forever mangled bodies made into mere cells of the collective organism. Woe unto them!

All of what the robot spoke flashed before them in a series of images. They could now somewhat see the parallels to Earth’s history, in particular the last couple of centuries.
So the Archons became an evil collective. They exhausted their homeworld and began to spread to other worlds like a swarm of locusts, or ant raiding parties. Captives were made into drones for use in further conquests, and their knowledge assimilated into the collective. Planets were wiped of live or destroyed completely. Their technology soon came to the point that they created what you call their Mothership. Its Heart at the center could recreate it if ever damaged or destroyed. With this the Archons were nearly invincible; thus the One who sent me at last chose to stop them.

A series of war imagery now appeared on the screen.

invasionomni1concept.jpg

spacebattlebyinkwisitor.jpg

We waged war throughout the universe. By the end the Archons had established a beachhead in your solar system and built many cities.
The screen flashed pictures of Cydonia on Mars, underwater structures on Europa and Moon bases being destroyed.

2012theendoftheworldwal.jpg

speedpaint10032011byele.jpg

I finally fought the Mothership above Earth and destroyed it. Its pieces were scattered across the planet, the Heart was lost, and I fell with them and became dormant until you found me. The previous world ended and the present was born.

So now you know who the Archons are. And I tell you that humanity is on the same path the Archons trod! We shall not allow another great war that destroyed so much life! Earth will be destroyed before its evil can grow any further!

Team GAIEA stood with hushed expression. Skygel spoke again.
Now come! I shall take you to a better world where you may live in peace.

(‘Oretachi Ohranger’ from Chouriki Sentai Ohranger)

“No” said Anthony suddenly.
No?
“I can’t believe we’re the only good people left. I know we aren’t. And I won’t be taken when there is still an enemy to fight.
The Archons will be destroyed as well.
“We can destroy them! I know there are enough good people in the world to justify our existence. There are still things I wish to do while alive, and I’m sure the same is true for my team. So for them and us, don’t destroy Earth! Let us fight the Archons. The One who sent you has been swayed before. Let us sway Him again!”

He was now certain of what this colossus and his master were. This sensation he felt being here could come from nothing else. But would the rest of his Team share his mind? Could he inspire them? For a moment he heard nothing… then Sita spoke.
“Please send us back!”
“Send us back!” cried Amane. She thought of her newlywed sister and knew her happiness couldn’t be cut short so suddenly.
“If the One is whom I believe, I know He is merciful” said Omar. “They deserve life!”
Skygel seemed moved. “Is this the feeling of all of you?
Only Nikolas and Emma remained. Emma actually felt a twang of guilt about being saved when she would hardly be considered a candidate by anyone. But if this being felt she was, perhaps a better woman lived within her. So rather ironically, this convinced her to stay and fight. “I’m with them” she answered. “I’ll fight.”
Nikolas looked around his forest and replied “If they’re all going down, then I can’t leave them behind.”

Anthony beamed. His little speech worked. All six of them now stood together at the feet of Skygel with the cosmos as a backdrop.
Very well. If such is your wish I will send you back. But the end is still nigh; in three days’ time or else you too shall perish with the Earth.
“We’ll defeat them before then” stated Anthony despite his own doubts.
And when the end comes?
“We’ll see when we get there.”
Skygel looked upon each of them curiously. A blinding white light enveloped them and a moment later the six found themselves on the Prometheus Base airstrip. The sea was gray and turbulent, and the wind blew strong. Bliss for chaos. A team of soldiers flooded out to greet them. Blane and Ito appeared at the entrance and stared at them in awe. It may not yet have been apparent to the heroes, but to Blane he knew that they were forever changed…

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Emma had once joked to a friend that she hoped the world would end on such and such predicted date so she could avoid worrying about school and finding a job. Now though with the end announced so bluntly and its approach so imminent, she was forced to see things quite differently.

She and the rest had been thoroughly debriefed on their experience. While they had been away, the planetwide situation had worsened. An emergency conference of the world nations had convened over both the Archon siege and Skygel’s doomsday message. Most of the West opted to challenge the siege directly. Opposing them were Venezuela and the other nations that had secretly made dealings with the Archons. Confident in the aliens’ power, they threatened war on any nation attempting to break the siege, and the only way out was to deliver the Heart at once.

The Russians and Chinese boldly suggested destroying the Heart (while accusing the Americans and Japanese of plotting to keep it for themselves) and launching an attack on both the Archons and Skygel. The Islamic nations vehemently opposed any aggression toward Skygel; the most theocratic Middle Eastern states even declared the proclamation as a sign from God and that everyone surrender to their imminent destruction. Meanwhile the U.S. navy had gone to reinforce the Japanese at the site where the Heart was being recovered, showing no aggression to the Archon ships but prepared to attack if given the order. Across the world people rioted, prayed vehemently, or sat huddled to their TVs, computers and radios watching and waiting.

An exhausted Blane had dismissed Team GAIEA until a course of action could be decided. The others had separated to cope in their own ways. Despite her feelings during her vision with Skygel, reality told her she was rather useless. Blane had thrown her off the Team. The most she could claim to do since was awaken Skygel, who had only told the world it was about to die. But she had to do something. If only she could get her position back… if only she hadn’t lost it out of brashness to start with.

She wandered into the gym of their apartment building, where by luck she found Amane practicing with a disassembly-capable naginata. She watched her quietly and waited for her to take notice and stop.
“Hello” Amane greeted.
“How can you do that at a time like this?” Emma wondered.
“I think better when I’m doing something” Amane explained. “I can keep the body occupied and not get anxious.”
Emma sat down next to her as she took a swig from her water bottle. “So have you thought of anything?”
Amane shook her head. “I think all we can do is wait for the general.”
“Just three days though…” Emma’s eye wandered to what had been her ComBrace on Amane’s wrist. She decided to take the plunge.

“I want my ComUnit back.”
“What?”
“I can’t do anything like this, but I know I have to. I’ll be sitting and waiting like everyone else otherwise.”
“But your injury - ”
“They didn’t tell you, did they?” Emma gleaned. “I tried to take out Paiche by myself. That’s how I was injured. I went against Blane’s orders.”
“Oh” Amane tried to look as impartial as possible. “That is why General Blane had me replace you.”
“Yes. And I want to apologize for what I said before. I have nothing against you. You’re just what Sita wants me to be.”
“She does have a parental nature” Amane observed.
“You noticed?”
The two girls shared a chuckle before Emma turned serious again.
“I don’t want to just take it back, but you should know I do want it. And until I can get back on the Team I’ll fight without it alongside you.”
“So you are not going home?”
“There won’t be a home in three days for anyone.”

Amane rose up. She set her naginata on the floor and invited Emma up too.
“Alright. Let me help you rehab and you can prove yourself to the general.”
“You mean you’re really willing to give it up?” Emma had half expected Amane to reproach her for the demand.
“It was yours to begin with; I only took the assignment because of my duty. I am willing to give it back if you can get them to take you back.”
“We all did” said Emma. “But I think I took it for granted until now. I’m not like the others…. except maybe Nikolas.”
“Shall we begin then?” asked Amane.

Emma nodded and tied her hair into a ponytail. Amane loosened her own hair and retied it into a bun. The two crossed arms, paused a moment, and began sparring…

Anthony ambled along the boardwalk past the shops on one side and the beach of a lake on the other, lost in thought. Few people were out and about despite it being daytime. The sky was a light gray with light slipping through, so it was not forebodingly dark, but it provided little comfort.

Three days… three days… and Team GAIEA would do nothing until the Mothership Heart was recovered and brought to the Archons, who seemed quite indifferent to Skygel’s threat. Its ally nations had even seemed to reflect that in their threats of war. He was biting at the chomp to do something. He and Team GAIEA had to save the world from both the Archons and the One’s judgment. The former he could fight or die trying; the latter he was not sure how to confront. He needed action.

A message came in on his ComPad. He answered it thinking it was Blane. Instead he found…
“Paiche!” Hector appeared in the holographic screen clad in his golden suit. “How did you get this frequency??”
“Red Eagle” he greeted, then continued in Spanish. “I want to talk to you.”
Anthony’s Spanish tongue wasn’t as fluent as some of his relatives might have liked, but he could still carry a conversation if simple enough. “What do you want?”
“I want to fight you.” Hector was not one for grandiose villainy.
“The world is about to be destroyed. Don’t you and your alien friends have bigger things on your mind?”
“Our mind is set on defeating the enemy, which means you. I see your face unmasked. Now I’ll let you see mine.”

He deactivated his suit and allowed Anthony to gaze upon him. He looked like a man with a soul tarnished beyond repair, and yet seemed not to realize he had one.
“You are a Cuban. Don’t you know Cuba has joined us?”
“I am an American” Anthony said flatly. Hector only snorted.
“You will not face me then, American?”
“I won’t.”
“Then I will order an attack on your base and have your teammates hunted down. You know the power of my ship. A snap of the finger and your people will be assailed.”
“Our base is ready for just that.”
“I will also start abducting people to make as drones, everywhere the siege is taking place. Up until now they have done nothing. You can keep it that way.”
“What??” Anthony couldn’t believe he would stoop so low for something so petty.
“I’m sending you my coordinates. Be there in one hour or I will give the order. Do not test me.”

Very well. If such is your wish I will send you back. But the end is still nigh; in three days’ time you too shall perish with the Earth.
It may not yet have been apparent to the heroes, but to Blane he knew that they were forever changed.

En route to the designated meeting spot Anthony relayed a message to his teammates to belay the order to return to base. He then received a message from Blane.
“Eagle. You’ve been ordered back to base.”
“I’m belaying that, sir. Paiche is demanding I meet him lest he attacks the base.”
“What?”
“He won’t order an attack if I meet him.”
“And you believe him?”
“I have to chance it. You need to free yourselves for when the Heart is recovered if the Archons attack.”
“You’ll be facing him alone.”
“I’ll be fine, sir. Just… let the others have their leave until we have the Heart.”
“Oh?”
“If we only have three days left then let them have some time for themselves.”
Blane noted the magnanimousness of this request and silently approved. “Very well. Be careful.”
“I shall.”

Pinkhasov blustered into the Relampago bridge where Hector was sitting with his eyes closed. The Larva crew worked at their stations without taking notice of either of them.
“What are you doing? You just sent a force out to Prometheus on your own!”
Hector, like the Russian, had been granted limited control over Archon movments, a bit similar to ganglia acting as mini-brains outside the main one for certain animals. He ignored him and furrowed his brow as though in deep thought.
“On whose authority do you have to act??” Pinkhasov pressed. “The Mothership Heart is almost in our grasp. This is not the time to play to your own whims!”
Still no response. Pinkhasov placed himself right before Hector’s chair. “Are you listening to me? I asked you a question!”

Now Hector took notice of him. His eyes snapped open and he put his finger to his mouth in a hushing gesture. Snakelike coils protruded from his chair and shoved Pinkhasov away. They made to strike again but he shot them down with a small laser installed into his mechanical arm. The old scientist threw a venomous look at the young killer.
“I would be careful whom you get mad” Hector warned in a soft voice. “Your tenure here may be at an end.”
“What are you talking about?” asked Pinkhasov sharply, but Hector said no more. In truth he was only guessing; through his captain’s chair he could tap into the Archon neural network and had gained a minimal glimpse into one of the countless thoughts of the Monarch, which had something to do with the Russian. He received notice of Anthony approaching the agreed place and removed himself from the bridge.

Pinkhasov glared at the remaining Archons but they continued to pay him no mind, so he left disgruntled. But he started to wonder what Hector had meant, coupled with how the Monarch seemed to have slighted him in his last audience. He also noticed his cybernetic arm was shorting from its use just now and his skin around it gangrenous. Something was wrong…

Anthony finally arrived and at first saw nothing. He dismounted and slowly surveyed the area until he began to hear Cuban music playing.

(‘Mata Siguaraya’ by Benny Moré)

He turned to see Hector sitting on Bolivar with its stereo loudly blaring this particular tune.
“What’s the idea?” he asked.
“I thought this might placate you.”
By sheer coincidence Anthony happened to like this song. It was a “pre-Castro” song as his grandfather called it; he and his father had a large collection of them as though making some kind of shrine to a Cuba long since gone. He wondered if the Venezuelan was making a joke of him after saying he was American.
“I came as promised. Now call off your ships.”
Hector mock sighed. “Ingles, ingles… habla Espanol, Gringo puppet.”
Anthony bristled and repeated himself in Spanish. Hector kept his mocking smirk and punched in a command on Bolivar’s console. The Pods and Walkers en route to Prometheus halted. At the base Blane and Ito tensely monitored them.
“What do you want?”
“I want to fight you.”
“That’s it? Why?”
“Do I need a reason? I can and I will. Or are you scared of me?”
“Earth is about to be destroyed; or if not the Archons will enslave us all. And you’re on their side! Do you not care about any of that??”
“Why should I give a damn about that?”

Hector turned off the music and left his bike. Anthony watched his index and middle fingers tap his ComBrace in preparation to fight and steeled himself.
“What did the Archons promise you?” he demanded of Hector.
“Me? Nothing. For Venezuela… well you can probably guess. I’m just along for the ride. Drafted, you could even say.”
“So this is all just fun to you?” Anthony barely hid his contempt.
Hector brought his ComChanger close to his face in a ready position. Anthony quickly matched him.
“Give me a show.”
This man was soulless, thought Anthony. For a moment there was complete silence. The two locked eyes on each other, waiting for the moment. Then Hector burst forward summoned his costume.
“Jack Up!” A beam shot from Bolivar and replaced Hector’s clothing with his golden suit and helmet.
“Build Up!” U.F.O. sent down its beam unto Anthony and clad him in his red ensemble. The combatants met each other…

Sita had gone looking for Nikolas and found him at the bar where he worked, playing his saxophone. Despite the global crisis a handful of the usual crowd had straggled in and kept half an ear open for his song. Sita watched patiently until he was done and then met him at the counter.
“Never seen you here before” he greeted.
“How do you act as though nothing is happening?” she asked him in puzzlement.
Nikolas shrugged. “If we’re all gonna die, there’s no sense moping about it. Might as well play to my crowd until we’re sent back to the front.”

He poured himself a drink and downed it fairly quickly to Sita’s surprise. Part of her thought the young German was a bit too adept at taking alcohol.
“But don’t you have any concerns? You’ll never see your family or friends again.”
Nikolas chuckled without mirth. “I don’t have as many friends as you think. People just like partying with me.”
“Oh I don’t believe that” Sita countered delicately. “You’re quite amiable.”
“I’m just like Emma, you know” he continued. “Just as incorrigible, just as loathed (Sita averted her gaze at this)… but she is only here by accident. I’m in exile.”
“Do you always wax romantic?”
“That was romantic?”
“You sounded like Anthony just now. That’s just how he would have phrased it if no one important could hear him.”
“He’s quite a character… he wouldn’t know what it’s like being me.”
“To be honest… I think you two are more alike than you know.”
Nikolas snorted. “Us?”
“Look what Anthony just did now: he cancelled our order to return to base just so we could… savor these last days as much as we can.”
“Is that what he did?”
“I think so. And you stood by Emma even when the rest of us... disagreed about what to do.”
“To put it politely” Nikolas held back from saying anything crude, the issue still leaving him ruffled.
“The point is you both consider the people around you and act for them. Anthony is perhaps a bit more refined... but it’s something.”
“Really… perhaps you should come home with and vouch for my character. I wonder what Anthony’s up to…”

Nikolas was a bit uplifted by Sita’s words but remained largely skeptical. Sita thought this could be a breakthrough. The “doting sister” personality she was so ingrained with had not dovetailed so smoothly with Emma’s. But instead of breaking away from it entirely, perhaps all she needed was an addendum in her approach. Take the good traits, expose it and drag it out of the person. She was presented with a glass of a sweet wine.
“What’s this?”
“For the more ‘refined’ tastes” said Nikolas with a smile.
Sita smiled back and accepted. It felt like nectar straight from the flower, which made her think of butterflies and their relatively short lives, which in turn brought her back to their plight. A stream of conscious all from one small glass…

Omar’s bodyguard service was busy shuttling various dignitaries and other important people between safehouses and assembly places as they frantically discussed the issue of Skygel and the Archons. All the while Omar kept his eyes and ears wide open for any useful tidbits and discreetly recorded them on his ComPad. Media people massed at these places to cover this ongoing story and were routinely herded away by security. Some though managed to keep up with their prey.

One in particular caught Omar’s attention: Ryana Khan, the woman he had met once before and fed the story about Team GAIEA. She was keeping watch over one such assembly hall in a café across the street and had in her employ her own network of investigative journalists who manned the street. While she snapped pictures and intercepted messages from her partners, Omar, under the premise of confiscating misappropriated information, came up to her and made her jump.
“Omar!”
“I’m afraid you and your friends must leave.”
“Aha. That means we’re onto something” she said quietly. “No wonder they sent White Gazeele on the case.”
Omar gaped. Ryana waved it off. “It wasn’t hard to figure out.”
“You haven’t told anyone” he questioned sternly.
“Of course not.” She winked “I wouldn’t want to lose my source.”
“Much less disappear somewhere. Or worse…” Omar muttered ominously.

He checked the scene and sat down, still pretending to be questioning her.
“So what is going on?” Ryana whispered.
“Why should I tell you?”
“You still don’t trust me?”
“You may not live to publish whatever I say.”
“Oh that” Ryana dismissed. “I don’t believe it. What if it’s an Archon trick?”
“It isn’t” said Omar firmly. “He spoke to me. He is what he says he is.”
He said it with such conviction. Ryana looked at his face and now noticed it looked a bit different from the last time they met. It was almost brighter, as though he had borne witness to a miraculous vision like the prophets of old.
“Then you believe…”
“I do.”
“So what will you do? Just wait for the end and do nothing?”
Omar looked at her. He could see something in her eyes. While her character may be somewhat apostatic, and despite her previous remark, at least a part of her wanted assurance, wanted to be sure of the faith born from the desert so long ago. And here was the moment that the whole world could see and either repent or curse the messenger. He wondered if it had merely been chance that made their paths cross.
“We will continue to fight as long as we can. If there is a chance we can redeem the world then I shall thank Allah for His mercy. But if the end does come…. then so be it. I’ll have done my duty.”
They sat there silently for a moment. To Ryana Omar now bore a resemblance to an old Arab soldier-politician recounting past wars for his interviewer, older than he was.
“You really did see something great” she then whispered.

A commotion suddenly broke out. Rioters had broken through the media circus and were shouting for the convening dignitaries, or at anyone who would hear. The rest of Omar’s bodyguard team tried to fend them off as their clients tried to escape but with little avail.

*BGM plays*
(‘Jigenjuu, kyuushuu! (1)’ from Choujin Sentai Jetman)

“What’s happening?” asked Ryana anxiously. Omar studied the scene with a frown. Ryana tried to look for her partners but they had gotten lost in the growing flood of maddened protestors. People soon began exchanging blows. Others shouted tidbits of breaking news. “The Archons are attacking! They’ve got the Heart! The end is here!!”
“Come on” Omar dragged Ryana after him as they slipped away. Across the world some of the Archon ships engaged in the siege were starting to fly to where the Heart was recovered. The rest were depositing Larvae commanded by Nymphae for a ground assault.

Omar led Ryana down a street while contacting Prometheus.
“That’s right” confirmed Blane. “We’ve just gotten through the Heart’s shield and brought it to the surface.”
“What do we do?”
Blane paused. During the lull he had tried to conference with his counterparts in the Omnitech Project but many of them had divided themselves along national lines: those for waging war on the Archons and those for abiding by their demands to garner peace. The latter was unthinkable for the old general, a man who had fought for freedom time and again. He and Ito had agreed: there was only one solution.
“Everyone rendezvous at those coordinates. You must destroy the Heart before the enemy can get away with it.”
Omar grit his teeth in anticipation. “Understood.”

A group of Larvae suddenly blocked their way. Omar ordered Ryana to take cover and transformed to White Gazelle to take them out. Ryana had the chance to snap some quick photos but she was too wrought with growing fear to think of it. She only watched the young Egyptian soldier in awe. Once the grunts were broken to pieces Omar brought Ryana to where some civilians were being guided to underground shelters by the authorities.
“Go with them and stay there until this is over.”
“Until this is over??”
“You don’t think the world’s ending, and with luck it won’t. So just stay here and you’ll be safe.”
“What about you? You can’t face a whole army alone.”
“I’m not alone. I have my God and my Team.”
Ryana remained doubtful, but Omar’s conviction was reassuring. He left her to go with the others and disappeared to join his teammates…

Anthony and Hector had moved from outdoors to within a large emptied warehouse. As they continually met each other blow for blow Hector became more and more intrigued.
“Why did you become a soldier?” he hissed. “What makes you fight?”
“God and country” Anthony replied.
Hector snorted. “A boy’s answer.”
They battered each other when at close range and fired their guns when apart. Anthony charged up his G-Blade and charged toward Hector while firing his Pistol to distract him, then got a slash in across his stomach. He then hurriedly assembled his G-Rifle and pummeled Hector with shots. Sparks from their cut and riddled suits choked the air between them. In response Hector took his G-Blaster Sword, caught it on Anthony’s shoulder before he could counter and cut across his torso.

The duel dragged on. The two were nearing exhaustion. But Hector was having fun; this Cuban boy was the most interesting prey he had hunted in quite some time. What made him tick? As their sabers clashed once more Anthony received the breaking report from Prometheus.
“On my way” he disengaged from Hector and ran back to Dash Eagle.
“Where are you going?” Hector roared and summoned Pirarucu. “We’re not finished!”
He fired a burst after him and propelled Anthony out of the building with the explosion.
“We’ve got the Heart! Your friends probably want you back.”
Hector prepared another blast but Anthony made his escape. The Venezuelan removed his costume and watched him go while licking his lips. Like the predator whose prey had just slipped his grasp, the hunt would go on.

(‘10th Man Down’ by Nightwish)

Anthony was picked up by Archelon where the rest of Team GAIEA had assembled.
“What happened to you?” asked Sita.
“Later” responded their leader as he took his seat. “Let’s get moving.”
He then noticed Emma next to Amane, who explained “I thought we could use her.”
Omar hid his doubt. Nikolas and Emma gave Anthony apprehensive looks but he relieved them with an acknowledging nod. “Set course.”
The Team flew to the site on the Pacific Ocean. At Prometheus Base the ships that Hector had sent now opened fire. Communication with them had been cut off. Both the Base and they would be on their own. The recovered Heart was sitting in a container on the deck of an aircraft carrier. Above them the Archons were closing in to receive it and annihilate the American and Japanese ships. Amane recited a quick prayer beneath her breath in her mother tongue to calm her nerves.

Archelon dove in and first attacked the Pods, then when enough were cleared away Team GAIEA dropped to the deck of one aircraft carrier and began fighting the Archons already deposited. Emma remained aboard their vehicle and continued dogfighting the remaining Pods and Walkers while trying to get a good shot at the Heart. Larvae debris spilled on the deck and into the sea. Their two Nymphae commanders then engaged the heroes, slavishly giving it their all to keep them from their precious treasure. As this went on the Archon Monarch’s immense ship descended through the cloud cover. Ilya Pinkhasov stood near the Monarch’s personal chamber, keeping one wary eye on this while the other on the battle. The Monarch had earlier summoned him to stand and watch from this vantage point the final crushing blow against their enemy. In contrast to the previous audience the Monarch was comparatively more diplomatic. But this actually made Pinkhasov more leery of the cyborg extraterrestrial. Suppose Hector had spoken the truth and his disposal was coming faster than he feared? What did the Monarch want with him?

Emma noticed the Monarch’s vessel and swerved to avoid its notice.
“There’s another ship coming down!” she warned the others.
The Team formed a ring to herd the Nymphae together and performed a finisher with their G-Rifles. Only then did they turn their attention to the vessel. It opened like a seed and from it emerged the Monarch, latched into his console and being lowered by a large robotic arm wrapped with muscle-like coils. The whole machine looked like a sea star that had vomited out its stomach in order to feed. Lightning streaked the sky and gave the Monarch an illuminated backdrop.
“What the hell is that??” Anthony gawked.
“The brain of the beast!” called down Pinkhasov. “Here is the Archons’ master organ!”
Team GAIEA’s VULCANS were dropped down and they began shooting at the Monarch, but an energy shield gave protection. The Monarch then unleashed a deluge of artillery from the “royal barge” that served as personal chamber and transport. The carrier they were own was broken in two and consumed in flames. The heroes were blown off their feet and would have plummeted to the water when Silverado emerged from the clouds already assembled and beamed them into its cockpit.
“Good save” complimented Nikolas. Lights blinked on and off in a row as though the robot, with its limited sentience, was offering thanks.

A group of Imatos serving as the Monarch’s guards were now taking the Heart up into the barge. Team GAIEA wasted no time. Silverado summoned Vesuvius Launcher and fired a shot at the Heart to destroy it. The Monarch however, seeing this, instantly summoned the remaining ships to come between the missile and the Heart and sacrifice themselves.
“You just killed your own followers!” Omar thundered indignantly. The others glared at the Monarch with equal shock and disgust. Pinkhasov merely laughed.
“Don’t you get it yet? The Archons are a collective superorganism. They’re all parts of one whole! You can’t kill them! They have achieved immortality and surpassed even God!”
“I can see who you’d join them” Nikolas taunted back. “Why don’t you come down from there and fight with some dignity, you damned old cripple!”

The Monarch came in front of Silverado’s cockpit by use of the arm. The Heart was loaded and secured.
“Our Network shall be reactivated and Earth made part of it. Your species will submit to us as countless before have. The remaking of the universe shan’t be stopped.”
This was delivered so matter-of-factly that the heroes might have preferred the ravings of a bombastic dictator. Silverado attempted another attack on the Archon brain but was driven back by another artillery round from the barge. The Monarch retreated back inside the vessel and made a hasty retreat. Silverado splash-landed into the ocean.

Pinkhasov followed the Monarch with his eyes back to the private chamber.
“Approach” ordered the Monarch. Tubes behind the console waved slightly. The Russian apprehensively obeyed, but at the same time began formulating a contingency plan.

Meanwhile the titanic vacuum was inching ever more closely toward the small blue planet.
