Gonna get straight to the point here; don't see it. Or at least don't pay to see it. As a humongoid fan of the video game I had been holding out hope for something at least pretty cool (because I thought the trailer was well-done), but this one just sucked all around. Terrible casting, atrocious acting, laughable dialogue, nonsensical plot, ridiculous special effect, and only about 5 minutes of real action in the whole movie, tops. You'd have to be a complete moron to screw up an adaptation like Max Payne, where the game itself was so theatrical ... apparently John Moore thought he could make this a generic cop drama/Sin City ripoff and no one would notice. I give it about a 4/10.
A lot of people are saying it's "not the best movie ever, but it's fun." I don't even really consider this to be true, because they took away all the dark, intriguing aspects of the story and characters and made it a stupid, watered down 21st century crime drama, which isn't fun because truly substantial crime dramas rely on character flesh and emotional investment. The only emotion I really invested in Max Payne was frustration that I had to pay 9 bucks to see it.
**Slight Spoilers**
Seriously, I can't believe how bad they dropped the ball on this one. I always think while playing the game that it basically IS a movie unto itself, but they somehow managed to leave out everything that made it stand out and screwed up everything that was left. They sacrificed the story's bold uniqueness in order to cash in on a commercial product, probably as a result of lack of new ideas. That's Hollywood for you. It's sad, because I figured they wouldn't even try to take the project on unless they were going to keep what made it work. The removal of the Punchinello crime family, Jack Lupino's original traits, Alfred Woden and the Inner Circle, and Nicole Horne as the main antagonist were vital mistakes; not giving Mona her proper backstory (which they couldn't do because they wrote out Angelo and Lisa Punchinello, effectively shooting themselves in the foot... in bullet time), and casting someone like Mila Kunis in the role to begin with, sealed that character's fate and in the process erased any meaningful role she had played in the game. Honestly, Mona was one of the most pointless characters I've ever seen in any film. She didn't do anything; didn't serve a single purpose. Her and B.B. might have been the greatest character-tragedies in the movie, but not for their storylines; the omition of their roles from the game defeated the entire reason for them being there, as Max is never supposed to know who he can and can't trust, having his best friend stab him in the back yet finding an unlikely ally in someone like Vladimir Lem (who was also left out of the film, except perhaps for an extremely vague appearance of someone who may or may not have been him). Upon close inspection, the plot doesn't even hold up. There really was no reason for Michelle to be killed. I could go on forever, but I'll just end the rant by saying that I'm boycotting the film and trying (with great success, actually) to eliminate it from my memory. After seeing the film, I immediately went home and played the original game for nearly 4 hours just to get the bad taste out of my mouth.
