I guess if one looked hard enough one could find HP references in a lot of things.
This is a fair point for a lot of things, but I'm not I'd agree it's the case with Harry Potter. Between how recent it is and how distinct Rowling's plotting and character style became, Harry Potter references are usually pretty easy to pick out.
Also... like, there's a certain archetypal nature to things like Star Wars or Star Trek that people usually see referenced everywhere? But Harry Potter's plot is not very archetypal, on the whole. There's some archetypal elements to it, but other parts of it are just really strange.
But saying that Hurri has "more" than Magi... That's just silly talk
I dunno, is it? I mean, the Magirangers cast spells and fly on brooms and... that's it. I seriously can't think of anything else the show took from Potter except for a fascination with Latin. The rest of it is typical Super Sentai stuff that's very polished but, well, typical.
Hurricanger has parallels to Harry Potter's weird flamboyant teacher characters, a weird flamboyant upperclassman character, the rival students who are jerks but you need to work with them to win, the characters having to become better students to fulfill their ~special destiny~... these are all really fundamental elements of the Harry Potter plot.
I guess you could argue about whether a show's surface layer, the motif, is more important than how the show is actually written. That would be a matter of taste, I'd think, but probably fuel for a good debate.
I tend to think that how the story is put together is most telling for a show's influences. Other people, particularly toy collectors, would probably feel differently.
Sorry, I deleted my post because it read more jerkier than I wanted it to -- it was supposed to sound sillier, pointing out how nearly every fricking ninja story Japan tells is the same...!
Ah, it's fine. (I didn't find the tone jerky, for what it's worth-- I thought you brought up a good point in a pretty amusing way.)
I figure the trend impetus for "let's do a ninja story" would've been Naruto, though... and from what I know about Naruto, Hurricanger doesn't actually have too much in common with it plot-wise. Does it? I'm unaware of "rival schools" being a major plot point in it.
As far as I know, no, but I'm not an advanced reader with Naruto. I read the first arc for a job a long time ago and haven't touched it since. Naruto begins in 1999, though, so it would presumably be early Naruto that spurred on Hurricanger.
Naruto does make a big deal out of rival ninjas having to fight each other, but usually it makes whoever the main guys fight more completely and obviously bad, then redeems them as allies only in subsequent fights. I could maybe see that being the impetus of the Gouraigers existing as characters but it doesn't really come through in how they're written (at least to me).
