Newer Sentai Turns Me Off

Uhhh...Sentai? Bioman, Flashman, Liveman...I mean, they aren't animals, but they're still cutesy.

Huh?

Uhh...no. SPD and Mystic Force's best episodes don't stand up to Deka and Magi.

No...no way is Dekaranger as bad as SPD at all or Magiranger/Mystic Force.

I never really got the Deka and Magi love. I like Deka in concept but the characters were grating even in the early episodes with their over-the-topness. Same with Magi.

Back on the general subject though, I think another problem is the "quantity over quality" approach to the mecha. One thing I will say for Deka and Magi, they weren't as mecha crazy as some other shows of the decade. (Though were it up to me, I would have scrapped DekaWingRobo, MagiLegendOh and Unigolon. Three mechas in Sentai, not counting carriers, is enough.)

I don't have love for Deka and Magi, but I do like them and saying they're as bad as SPD and Mystic Force (seriously, Mystic Force? That's like saying good episodes of Boukenger were as good as Operation Overdrive) seems unbelievably overkill and harsh. Not to mention it's saying "Bruce Kalish is on the same level as this."

As for the mecha (It was just MagiLegend BTW), meh. I can definitely see the Goseiger mecha buffing being unecessary, but I'm starting to think Toei has this quota of toys they have to sell nowadays and putting more mecha in thes show helps that. I'm not saying that's a good thing but that's just what I think.

Well, I just didn't care about that many people in Gao except for Red and Silver. (see, my memory sucks. I can't remember their names now)

In Shinken, I cared about Takeru and Juuzo as well as the others. I even grew to like Ryuunosuke eventually

SPD had some good stuff going for it with its original ideas. But when it started copying Deka and shafting its own material, it took a downturn. But that is separate from Deka's quality itself. I didn't like the wackiness of the characters in Deka and Magi. What I cited in my first post about newer Sentais can also be seen in these shows too.

There's definitely some kind of quota. But it's not only the glut of mechas nowadays, the robos themselves are getting uglier. I think most everyone despises the Go-Onger mecha, but I'd say the robos (with some exceptions) of Gaoranger, Hurricanger, Abaranger, Magiranger, Boukenger, Shinkenger and Goseiger are pretty mediocre too compared to the designs of yesteryear. (As opposed to the individual components, most of which look decent.)

But in all serious, yeah, Time-Geki.

Even Hurricanger? I don't get the appeal of that show either other than how "badass" the Gouraiger and Shurikenger are.

Ah, it always comes down to the characters in the end...

Well, alright then. This seems a problem easily solvable by watching old Super Sentai and at least keeping up with the new to see if something you might like will eventually pop up.

I think this problem only becomes an issue when it comes to the later mechs and power ups and add ons and junk they get. I tend to like most of the basic mecha (I actually liked all three Go-Onger robos before they went combo crazy).
